For a 3D movie on Blu-ray, you need a Blu-ray-capable drive and software that can preserve the disc’s MVC 3D track. A DVD ripper cannot read a Blu-ray 3D source. If you want to keep the disc’s video unchanged, use a lossless disc-to-MKV workflow; if you want a smaller file, use a transcoder and accept that it converts the video.
Do you need a Blu-ray ripper for 3D movies?
Yes, when the movie is on a Blu-ray 3D disc. Your optical drive must be able to read Blu-ray, and your software must recognize the disc’s 3D video structure. A DVD-only drive or ripper cannot substitute for either requirement.

If the movie is on DVD, DVD input support may be suitable, but that does not make it a Blu-ray 3D workflow. The source disc determines the drive and software capabilities you need.
What makes a Blu-ray 3D rip different?
Blu-ray 3D stores its video as an AVC stream for the left-eye view and a linked MVC child stream that supplies right-eye data. MakeMKV’s Blu-ray 3D FAQ describes MVC as the disc’s native 3D representation and explains that segment-map entries pair segments for both eyes.

That distinction matters when selecting tracks: an AVC-only output represents the left-eye, 2D view. To retain 3D, the MVC child track must also be selected. Side-by-side (SBS) and top-and-bottom are output formats that playback devices can generate from the AVC/MVC streams; they are not the native Blu-ray 3D representation.
Choose the workflow by what you want to preserve

Remuxing with MakeMKV versus converting with HandBrake
MakeMKV: preserve the video streams in an MKV container
MakeMKV’s official FAQ says it transfers an “exact, lossless copy of the content on your disc into the MKV container.” It documents Blu-ray 3D support and says video is not changed or compressed, though some audio options may differ. For 3D, its separate Blu-ray 3D FAQ says to select the MVC child track. MKV can contain multiple audio and subtitle tracks, chapters, and MVC, but the presence of an MVC track does not mean every player will support it.

HandBrake: convert the video for a different file
HandBrake’s version 1.8.0 documentation describes DVD and Blu-ray as input types, but states that video is always converted. It is therefore a transcoder, not a direct, unchanged stream-copy tool. Its documentation also says HandBrake does not defeat copy protection and cannot handle many protected commercial DVD and Blu-ray discs.
A common distinction is to preserve the disc streams first, then transcode only if you need a smaller or differently encoded file. A transcoded file is a new encode, not a lossless preservation of the source video; verify that the conversion workflow retains the 3D presentation you need before relying on it.

Check the drive and playback chain before starting
- Drive: For Blu-ray 3D, use an optical drive that can read Blu-ray. Check the computer’s operating system, connection, and drive capability; compatibility for any specific drive model is not established here.
- Tracks: Confirm the ripper recognizes the disc as Blu-ray 3D and includes its MVC child track. An AVC-only result is not the full 3D stream structure.
- Playback: Check whether the intended software, device, and display chain supports MVC or a derived format such as SBS or top-and-bottom. Support varies by playback setup.
- Protection: A program’s ability to read a disc format does not mean it can handle copy-protected commercial discs.
Is copying a 3D movie legal?
Legality depends on where you live, what rights apply, and how the copy will be used. In the United States, the Copyright Office’s 37 CFR § 201.40 lists specific exemptions for defined uses, including certain short clips for criticism, commentary, and education; specified accessibility work by educational institutions; and limited preservation or replacement by qualifying libraries, archives, or museums subject to conditions. These are not a general personal format-shifting exemption. The Office’s Section 1201 FAQ says a broad audiovisual exemption for space-shifting and format-shifting was declined.
Those U.S. provisions do not describe other countries’ laws, and this is not individualized legal advice. HandBrake recommends consulting a legal advisor if you are unsure about your rights to copy a disc.
