A yellow warning icon and a Device status error code often point to a driver or configuration issue; if Windows does not detect the drive there either, work through the checks below and contact the computer or drive manufacturer if the problem persists.
First, check whether Windows detects the drive

Right-click Start and open Device Manager.

Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives. If the drive is listed, open its properties and read the Device status field on the General tab. A yellow exclamation point or an error code gives you a useful clue, but it does not by itself identify the cause.

If the category or drive is not visible, choose View > Show hidden devices in Device Manager and check again.

Microsoft Support says that a drive missing from File Explorer with a warning in Device Manager usually indicates a driver or configuration problem. Its article lists codes 19, 31, 32, 39, and 41 as examples associated with configuration information, driver loading or disabling, or Windows loading a driver but failing to find the hardware. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance; the code is a diagnostic clue, not a complete diagnosis.

Check BIOS and chipset drivers
Before changing Windows drivers, check that the optical drive is enabled in the computer’s BIOS or UEFI settings. Menus and labels differ by manufacturer; if you are uncertain, follow the computer maker’s instructions rather than changing unrelated settings.
Also check with the computer manufacturer if the drive came with the computer, or with the drive manufacturer if you bought it separately, to confirm that the chipset drivers are current. Microsoft recommends these checks before proceeding to reinstalling device drivers.

Update or reinstall the DVD/CD-ROM driver
Look for a manufacturer driver update
Use the computer or drive manufacturer’s official support site to check for a relevant driver update. Avoid third-party driver-download sites. If there is no applicable update or the drive remains unavailable, reinstall its Device Manager entry.

In Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.

Right-click the affected drive and select Uninstall device (the wording may vary slightly).

Restart Windows. Microsoft says Windows automatically reinstalls the driver after the restart.
Reinstall IDE/ATAPI controller entries if needed
If the drive still does not appear after reinstalling its device driver, Microsoft’s next method is to uninstall the listed ATA channel or controller entries so Windows can reinstall them. The exact entries vary by computer, so do not remove unrelated devices.

Expand the IDE/ATAPI controller category, if present, and uninstall the listed ATA channel or controller entries identified in Microsoft’s instructions.

Restart the computer and allow Windows to reinstall the drivers.
Use registry changes only as an advanced last step
Microsoft describes deleting the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values under the CD/DVD device class registry key as a possible resolution. Registry edits can cause serious problems if performed incorrectly, require administrator access, and may affect CD/DVD recording software. Microsoft advises backing up the registry first. If you are not comfortable identifying the exact key and values in its instructions, do not attempt this step; seek qualified help instead.
Consider what changed before the drive disappeared
Microsoft notes that the problem may occur after a Windows upgrade, installing or uninstalling CD/DVD recording software, or uninstalling Microsoft Digital Image. These events provide useful context, but none proves what caused the issue on a particular computer.
When to contact the manufacturer
If the drive remains absent after the checks and Windows reinstall steps, contact the computer maker for an integrated drive or the drive maker for a separately purchased one. Microsoft says its listed resolutions help some cases but not all, and its guidance does not establish a universal test for hardware failure. If you need disc access while diagnosis is ongoing, an external DVD drive is a separate workaround to consider only after checking compatibility with your computer; it is not a repair for the built-in drive.
