What you are actually solving in Dupery
Each case places good- and evil-aligned roles in a generated grid. You investigate characters, collect what they say, identify accounts that do not fit together, and decide whom to arrest. The official listing names four role categories: Innocent, Meddler, Underling, and Traitor. It specifically says Underlings lie, Traitors are more deceptive, and even characters who appear well meaning may be compromised. That means a friendly tone is not proof of an innocent alignment.

Build a clue record before you form a theory
When you hear something important, make one compact record on the board. A useful record has four parts:
- Speaker: the character who supplied the information.
- Literal claim: what the statement explicitly says, without adding motives or assumptions.
- Subject: the person, role, object, or place the statement concerns.
- Status: supported, contradicted, or unresolved.
For example, do not write “Mara is guilty.” Write something closer to “Mara says the east-grid witness was absent; source: Mara; status: unresolved.” If another character gives a different account, you can compare the two statements and then judge the speakers’ reliability. This is an organizational method inferred from the board’s strings, pins, and pen; the store page does not publish a required symbol system.
Keep observation and interpretation on separate lines
The literal claim is your observation. An interpretation is a second-layer conclusion such as “the witness is lying” or “Mara must be an Underling.” Keeping those layers separate prevents a guess from quietly becoming a fact. A statement detached from its speaker has lost much of its value. The same claim carries a different weight when it comes from a role that lies than when it is corroborated by several independent accounts. Use a pin or string to keep the speaker connected to the claim and to the relevant suspect or location. Never rely on memory for who said what.
Use an explicit uncertainty mark
Reserve a visible board mark for “not established.” Do not use the same line, pin, or annotation style for a confirmed relationship and a working hypothesis. The exact notation is up to you; the important point is that an uncertain connection remains visibly uncertain until another clue supports it.

Classify reliability without assuming a role you have not proved
Dupery gives you role categories, but the public listing does not provide a complete behavior chart for every category. Use the information that is established and avoid inventing extra rules.

This approach avoids two opposite errors: believing everyone, and discarding every statement from a suspicious character. A deceptive speaker can still point you toward a location or relationship that another clue confirms; the claim’s value must be tested, not accepted or rejected solely on tone.

A repeatable case-solving workflow
- Survey the case before committing. Identify the characters and the parts of the grid you can investigate. Do not make an early arrest simply because one account sounds unusual.
- Interview and record. Add each material statement to the board with its speaker attached. Preserve wording that could later matter, such as who was seen, where, and when.
- Translate claims into testable links. Turn “I saw someone near the northern area” into links between the speaker, the person mentioned, and the location. Leave unknown parts unresolved instead of filling them with assumptions.
- Cross-reference. Compare accounts about the same person or place. Look for direct contradiction, mutually supporting details, and claims that cannot all be true at once.
- Rank hypotheses. Mark which explanation currently fits the most evidence, but keep competing explanations visible if the information is incomplete.
- Recheck role-dependent reliability. A contradiction may indicate a lie, a compromised character, or a misunderstanding. Use the role information and additional testimony to distinguish those possibilities.
- Perform an arrest review. Confirm that every accusation rests on more than one untested assumption. Check the reputation consequence before you commit.
- Update the board after each new clue. Procedural cases and imperfect information mean an earlier theory can become weaker. Edit or relabel old links rather than defending them out of habit.
How to find contradictions that matter
Start with direct incompatibilities
The strongest lead is a pair of claims that cannot both be accurate under the same interpretation. Put those statements side by side, retain both speakers, and identify exactly what conflicts: identity, location, timing, or the alleged action. “These stories feel different” is not yet a contradiction; specify the proposition that is incompatible.
Separate contradiction from missing information
If one character says nothing about a location and another places someone there, the accounts are incomplete rather than contradictory. Mark the gap and search for a clue that addresses it. Arresting because a character failed to volunteer a fact turns silence into evidence without support.
Look for corroboration, not just suspicious wording
A dramatic or evasive statement is a lead to investigate. Give it more weight when an independent account confirms the same person, place, or event. Corroboration should connect to the original claim, not merely repeat that the speaker “seems trustworthy.”

Test the smallest claim first
Break a broad accusation into components. If “the witness is a Traitor” depends on “the witness was at the scene” and “the witness lied about it,” test those pieces separately. A single failed assumption can collapse an otherwise convincing narrative.
Five deduction mistakes that cost runs
1. Treating every character as truthful
The listing explicitly identifies lying and deceptive roles and warns that apparently good characters may be tainted. A calm explanation is still only a statement until another clue supports it.
2. Treating a plausible story as a proven one
Several explanations can fit the first few clues. Choose the one best supported by the whole board, but retain an unresolved status when the evidence does not distinguish between alternatives. Plausibility is a reason to investigate, not a reason to arrest.
3. Losing the speaker attached to a clue
Copying a claim without its source removes the information you need to evaluate deception and compare accounts. Every note should answer “who said this?” before it answers “what does this mean?”
4. Refusing to revise an early theory
Procedurally generated cases do not guarantee that your first pattern is correct. When a new statement conflicts with an old conclusion, revisit the original wording and reliability assessment. Change the hypothesis if the evidence changed.

5. Arresting on suspicion alone
Wrongful arrests reduce reputation, and allowing reputation to fall too low can get the detective fired. A suspicion can guide your next investigation; it should not be your final evidence standard.

Arrests have an explicit cost-benefit structure. Arresting a good-aligned role reduces reputation. Solving the case requires arresting all evil roles and increases reputation. Because a low reputation can end the run, an arrest is not merely a declaration of confidence; it is a resource decision with consequences.
Before you arrest, run this checklist
- Have you recorded the accusation’s source rather than relying on memory?
- Can you point to at least one independent supporting clue?
- Is the apparent contradiction specific, or is it only a vague feeling?
- Have you considered that a witness may be lying or compromised?
- Would the theory still stand if your least reliable statement were removed?
- Does the board identify every evil role required for a complete solve, or are you stopping after finding one suspect?
This is a practical standard derived from the listed reputation stakes, not a hidden scoring formula. The public description does not state how many reputation points each arrest changes, so do not assume a fixed numerical penalty.
An illustrative way to work a contradiction
Imagine a case in which Character A says the northern witness never left the central room, while Character B says the same witness delivered a message outside. Record both statements with their speakers. Then ask:

- Are the two claims about the same time and event?
- Is either statement explicitly supported by another character?
- Which speaker has a role or prior account that makes deception more likely?
- Could both statements be true because they refer to different visits?
If the timing is identical and no third clue reconciles the accounts, you have a targeted contradiction to investigate. You still do not automatically know which speaker is evil. The contradiction narrows the next question; corroboration determines the arrest.
Re-evaluate when new information changes the board
Do not erase an old clue when it becomes inconvenient. Keep the literal statement, but change its status or your interpretation. For example, a link marked “supported” may become “contested” after a later account introduces a timing conflict. This preserves an audit trail of your reasoning and helps reveal which assumption caused the theory to fail.
A useful reset sequence is:
- Read the original statements without your annotations.
- Remove conclusions that depended on an unverified link.
- Re-sort the remaining clues by speaker and subject.
- Identify the smallest unresolved contradiction.
- Seek corroboration for that contradiction before rebuilding the larger theory.
What changes between missions and regions
The full-game Steam listing describes three campaign regions, each with different region mechanics and roles. It also advertises role selection between missions, quirks and modifiers, a reputation meter, procedural cases, and a final boss confrontation for each campaign. The available public description does not provide enough detail to give a reliable region-by-region strategy, so treat each new region as a fresh rules context and read its role or modifier information carefully before applying an old assumption.
Quirks and modifiers can change how a case feels without changing the core discipline: preserve sources, distinguish observations from inferences, and verify an arrest. If a modifier alters the information you receive, make that limitation visible on the board rather than silently treating missing evidence as innocence.

The official demo listing gives a release date of October 24, 2025. It says the demo includes around 40 of the 175+ roles, three quirk challenge modes, and rotating special sets. Those figures describe the demo listing, not a verified final-game total.
The full-game page separately describes “over 200 individual roles” and lists the release date as “To be announced.” Because the pages present different counts and versions, do not combine them into one definitive number. Availability and release plans can change; check the current Steam pages for the latest status.
Do not confuse the game with the promotional ARG
Dupery also has a separate promotional ARG described on the official help page. Its code-solving material is distinct from the core Steam game’s generated cases, character testimony, detective board, and arrest system. A clue found while solving the ARG should not be treated as a rule about role reliability or case logic inside the game.
A compact routine for every case
- Record the speaker before interpreting the statement.
- Write the literal claim, then the hypothesis it suggests.
- Connect people and locations with visible, revisable board links.
- Mark unresolved information instead of filling gaps with confidence.
- Compare accounts for exact contradictions and independent corroboration.
- Reassess reliability when a role may lie or be compromised.
- Revisit the entire theory when a new clue conflicts with it.
- Arrest only after checking the reputation risk and the requirement to identify all evil roles.
Following that routine turns the board into an evidence trail rather than a collection of guesses. It also matches the game’s central demand: solve imperfect, procedurally generated information by checking who said what, how well the accounts fit, and whether the evidence justifies the cost of acting.
