For Ryujinx homebrew, no modified Switch is needed. For commercial Switch games, the Ryujinx FAQ says you need access to a Switch compatible with custom firmware (CFW) in order to dump your system firmware, keys, and legally purchased games. The FAQ describes access to a compatible console, not personal ownership of one. Whether dumping files is lawful is a separate question, and the answer depends on where you live.
Homebrew and commercial games need different things
Ryujinx treats two kinds of software differently. The table below sets out what the project’s FAQ says for each.

The word “many” matters. The FAQ does not say every homebrew application runs without a console, so check the specific application before assuming it does.

The FAQ defines the term narrowly. In its words: “In this context, to dump files is to transfer them from your hacked Nintendo Switch to your PC, using either a microSD card or a USB-C cable.” It names nxdumptool, a homebrew tool, as the means for dumping games, updates, and DLC.

Two transfer methods are named: microSD and USB-C. Each is only a way of moving files. The FAQ does not state a capacity, brand, speed rating, or cable specification, and it does not require you to buy either item. If you already own a microSD card or a USB-C data cable that fits your setup, the FAQ does not call for anything more.
This article does not describe how to prepare a console, run nxdumptool, or obtain keys. Those steps belong to the project’s own documentation, and the FAQ itself says the project does not support piracy.

Technical requirements are not legal permission
A console that meets a technical requirement is not the same as a legal right to copy a game. Three sources frame the legal side. They do not settle the question for any particular person.
The U.S. starting point: DMCA section 1201
The U.S. Copyright Office’s 2024 overview of section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act says the statute generally makes it unlawful to circumvent technological measures that control access to copyrighted works. It also explains that the statute provides for limited, temporary exemptions, which are set through a rulemaking process.

What the current exemptions cover
The current regulation, 37 C.F.R. § 201.40, lists exemption circumstances for video games. They include certain lawfully acquired games whose support from an outside authentication server has ended, and preservation work by eligible libraries, archives, or museums. Those enumerated conditions are narrow. They do not establish a general exemption for an individual who dumps a currently available Switch game for personal emulation.
Owning a cartridge or buying a digital copy does not, on the basis of these sources, make circumvention or copying lawful. Laws outside the United States differ, and the U.S. analysis does not carry over to other countries.

Nintendo’s position
Nintendo’s June 30, 2026 DMCA notice on GitHub states that Switch games are encrypted and depend on proprietary keys such as prod.keys. It alleges that certain emulator repositories enable circumvention. This is the rights holder’s stated position, not a court finding. A takedown notice asserts a claim; it does not decide one.

- Commercial games: the FAQ’s documented route requires access to a Switch compatible with custom firmware. The FAQ does not list which console revisions qualify, so this article does not confirm compatibility for any model.
- Legal position: the U.S. framework above is a starting point, not a verdict on your situation. Check the law where you live before you dump anything.
- Project rules: the FAQ says Ryujinx’s repositories and Discord forbid requests for copyrighted games, firmware, keys, or shaders. Do not ask for those, and do not seek them from unofficial sources.
