No Halloween parade was scheduled in Dublin on October 31, 2024. A false online listing nevertheless led people to gather on O’Connell Street expecting a Macnas Halloween Parade. The episode shows how a fabricated event can gain credibility through search results, social posts, reused photographs and AI-assisted copy—without proving that AI itself caused the gathering.
What happened in Dublin on Halloween night?
The false listing advertised a Macnas Halloween Parade from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on October 31, 2024. It described a route from Parnell Street to Christchurch Cathedral, and people gathered along O’Connell Street expecting the procession to begin.
The Independent reported that no Dublin parade had been planned for 2024. The advertised event never took place. A large crowd remained in the city centre until Gardaí intervened; Today FM reported that Luas services were disrupted temporarily.
An Garda Síochána issued a public notice stating: “Please be advised that contrary to information being circulated online, no Halloween parade is scheduled to take place in Dublin city centre this evening or tonight.” The notice added: “All those gathered on O’Connell Street in expectation of such a parade are asked to disperse safely.”

Why did people believe the parade was real?
A convincing event listing
The claim appeared on the My Spirit Halloween website and was visible through Google search. It supplied the details people expect from a legitimate public event: a name associated with Dublin’s Macnas performances, a start and end time, a route and promotional images.
Reused photographs and social promotion
Futurism, citing Institute for Strategic Dialogue investigator Ciarán O’Connor, reported that fake Facebook pages promoted the event and used photographs from earlier Macnas parades. Old images can make a new announcement look authentic when viewers do not check the date, venue or organizer.

AI-assisted text
Futurism also reported that the site operator claimed at least 30 percent of the website’s content had been made with AI assistance. That figure is an operator’s claim relayed by O’Connor; it was not an independently audited measurement. The reporting supports a narrower conclusion: AI-assisted writing was one part of the publishing operation, alongside a website, copied imagery, search visibility and social distribution.
Was AI responsible for the hoax?
There is no evidence that an autonomous AI system created or organized the gathering. The documented chain is a human-published false listing that used several familiar distribution tactics, with some text reportedly generated or edited with AI. Search ranking and social sharing then exposed the claim to people looking for Halloween activities.

Describing the incident as “AI caused thousands to appear” overstates what is known. A more accurate account is that AI may have reduced the effort needed to produce convincing event copy, while people and platforms handled publication, discovery and sharing.
What is established—and what remains uncertain?
| Question | What the reporting establishes |
|---|---|
| Was a Dublin Halloween parade scheduled? | No. Gardaí said no parade was scheduled, and The Independent reported there were no plans for a 2024 Dublin parade. |
| Where did people gather? | O’Connell Street was the main focal point, with crowds also expecting the advertised route toward Christchurch Cathedral. |
| How large was the crowd? | Contemporaneous reports used “thousands,” but no source supplied a counting method or independently measured total. “A large crowd” is the defensible description. |
| Who ran the website? | Not established. O’Connor told Futurism that people behind it appeared to be based in Pakistan despite a claimed Illinois location, but available reporting does not independently verify their identities or location. |
| Why was the site created? | Uncertain. Advertising-revenue and other motive theories were reported as beliefs or speculation, not proven facts. |
How the false parade claim spread
- Fabricated publication: My Spirit Halloween posted an event page presenting the Macnas parade as a real 2024 event.
- Borrowed credibility: The page used the Macnas name and images from previous parades.
- Search discovery: The listing gained Google visibility, allowing people searching for Dublin Halloween plans to find it.
- Social amplification: Fake Facebook pages and sharing extended its reach beyond the original site.
- Offline convergence: People who encountered the claim independently arrived at the same central-city location.
- Official correction: Gardaí posted a denial and asked the crowd to disperse safely.
How to check an event listing before attending
Verify the organizer’s own channels
Check the named organizer’s official website and verified social accounts, rather than relying on an unfamiliar event page or a search-result snippet. For a Macnas event, an announcement should come through Macnas or a recognized venue or authority.

Look for independent confirmation
Major city-centre parades normally generate notices from police, transport operators, local authorities and established news outlets. If only one new website carries the announcement, treat it as unconfirmed.
Inspect dates and images
Reverse-check promotional photographs and read captions carefully. Images from earlier years do not prove that a new parade is scheduled.

Confirm immediately before travel
Event plans can change, so check official notices on the day. In this case, the Garda statement directly answered the question of whether a parade was scheduled.
Why this case matters
The Dublin incident demonstrates how ordinary online mechanisms can turn a false listing into a real-world crowd. A polished page, familiar branding, old photographs, search exposure and social sharing created enough apparent evidence for people to travel. AI-assisted copy may have helped produce the page, but the event was the result of a broader publishing and distribution chain—not proof that AI independently generated a crowd or that a particular motive has been established.
