Dual-screen phones come in two hardware designs. One uses two separate display panels joined by a hinge, as in Microsoft’s Surface Duo line. The other is a conventional phone that pairs with a detachable second-screen accessory, as with the LG V60 ThinQ and LG Dual Screen. The most important point for buyers in October 2026 is that Microsoft says the Surface Duo 2 has reached end of servicing and will receive no newer Android versions or security updates. Two ways to build a dual-screen phone
Two panels joined by a hinge
In this design, the phone is two complete screens on a book-style frame. When closed, you see one screen; when open, the apps can use both panels as one workspace or run side by side. Microsoft’s Surface Duo models are the clearest examples. Because each half is a separate rigid panel, the phone can be thinner when closed than a single-panel phone with a large folding display, but the open device is wider and the gap between panels is part of the user experience.

A phone plus a detachable second screen
Here the handset is a normal phone with its own main display, and a separate accessory adds a second screen. LG’s V60 ThinQ with LG Dual Screen is the example in the sources. The accessory has its own cover display and a 360-degree hinge, and it connects to the phone over USB-C. You get a standard phone when the accessory is off, but you carry the extra bulk and weight when it is attached.

How this differs from a single flexible foldable
A single flexible foldable uses one bendable panel that opens into a larger inner screen. Dual-screen phones avoid that single fold: the panels are rigid, and the hinge is where the two screens meet. The accessory design goes further and separates the second display from the phone entirely. When comparing models, check four things: how many panels there are, whether the second screen is built in or detachable, how the device behaves when open and closed, and whether the manufacturer still supports the software.

The sources do not support ranking these models overall. The first-generation Surface Duo, the Surface Duo 2, and the V60 with Dual Screen take different routes to the same goal, and each involves different trade-offs in size, software support, and accessory dependence.
Reading the battery figure
Microsoft’s headline battery number for the original Surface Duo is up to 15.5 hours of local video playback. That figure comes from a July 2020 Microsoft test using preproduction devices, repeated 1080p/24fps local video, and a single screen under the conditions Microsoft specified. It is a manufacturer test result, not a general real-world estimate. Microsoft also notes that usage changes battery life, so expect different results for streaming, gaming, navigation, or heavy multitasking across both screens.

Software support: check this before anything else
Surface Duo 2
Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2 support page states: “This device has reached its end-of-servicing date based on the Surface Lifecycle for Android-based devices and will no longer receive newer Android version and security updates.” Attribute this to Microsoft Support. For anyone choosing a phone to use for several years, this limits the device’s security future, whatever its hardware features.
Surface Duo (first generation) and LG V60 ThinQ
Both specification pages list Android 10. That is the launch software, not evidence of current update status. Do not assume either handset receives current Android security patches without checking the manufacturer’s current support information for that exact model.

Buying a used dual-screen phone
The sources reviewed do not identify reliable sellers, current prices, stock, or condition grading for these models. If you are considering a used device, check the following before purchase:
- The exact model and carrier variant, and whether it matches the network you use
- Screen condition on both panels, and whether any display areas are damaged or unresponsive
- Hinge condition, including whether the hinge opens and closes smoothly and holds position
- For the LG setup, whether the LG Dual Screen accessory is included and works with the phone
- Battery condition, since the original test figures do not show age-related wear
- The seller’s return policy and warranty terms
- Current software and security support for that model, which may already have ended
What the sources do not establish
The available official sources document historical designs, selected specifications, and one current support statement from Microsoft. They do not provide a complete list of dual-screen phones on sale in October 2026, current prices or stock, independent test results, or a market-size figure. LG’s launch statement from its V60 ThinQ announcement describes the company’s 2020 strategy for 5G devices and should not be read as a current market assessment.
