DTS-HD Master Audio is a lossless surround-sound format built around a conventional DTS audio core. A decoder that supports the full format can recover the encoded audio without lossy compression; older equipment that supports only standard DTS may play the core instead, without decoding the complete lossless track.
What DTS-HD Master Audio means
Analog Devices describes DTS-HD Master Audio as a lossless extension to the core DTS 5.1 surround format. It says the format is used on Blu-ray discs to allow bit-to-bit accurate reproduction of the original studio master. In practical terms, “lossless” describes how the encoded audio can be decoded—not a guarantee that every listener will hear an improvement over another track or format.

The audible result depends on the mix, playback equipment, room, and listening conditions. Format capability alone does not establish a universal preference.
How the DTS core and lossless extension work
A DTS-HD Master Audio stream includes a conventional DTS core as well as the high-definition extension. A compatible standard DTS decoder can use the core as a fallback, even if it cannot decode the full DTS-HD Master Audio stream. That fallback is not equivalent to full-format playback: it does not reproduce the lossless extension and may not provide all the track’s channels.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How it differs from related DTS formats
| Format | What the cited documentation says | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| DTS-HD Master Audio | Denon describes it as lossless. Its SR7009 manual lists up to eight channels at 96 kHz/24-bit, or up to six channels at 192 kHz/24-bit. | These are documented capabilities, not a promise that a particular track uses the maximum. |
| DTS-HD High Resolution Audio | Denon describes it as an improved version of conventional DTS, DTS-ES, and DTS 96/24, supporting 48 or 96 kHz sampling and up to 7.1 discrete channels. | It is a distinct format. Denon’s description calls Master Audio lossless but does not apply that label to High Resolution Audio. |
| DTS:X | DTS says DTS:X content is backward compatible with a DTS-HD decoder. | Compatibility does not make DTS:X and DTS-HD Master Audio interchangeable terms. |
Channel and sample-rate limits also depend on the source and the stated condition. Analog Devices describes DTS-HD Master Audio support for up to 7.1 channels at 24-bit/96 kHz. Denon’s SR7009 manual lists up to eight channels at 96 kHz/24-bit and up to six at 192 kHz/24-bit. Neither set of figures means that every release contains those configurations.
What you need for full DTS-HD Master Audio playback
Full decoding depends on the capabilities and settings of the complete playback chain: the source, the receiving equipment or decoder, and the output configuration. Check the manuals for the exact player and receiver to confirm whether they support DTS-HD Master Audio and how the player sends audio. The available documentation establishes the DTS-core fallback, but not the behavior of every model or connection; do not assume a connection alone guarantees full decoding.

- If the receiving equipment supports DTS-HD Master Audio and the source sends the full format through a supported output path, it can decode the lossless stream.
- If the equipment supports only conventional DTS, it may decode the embedded DTS core instead.
- If the format does not play as expected, check the player’s audio-output setting and the receiver’s input or decoding display against both manuals.
Does lossless mean it will sound better?
No universal listening advantage follows from the word “lossless.” DTS-HD Master Audio is designed to preserve the encoded audio during decoding, but whether it sounds different or preferable depends on the specific mix and listening setup. The technical documentation cited here establishes format capabilities; it does not provide controlled listening comparisons.
