The October 13, 2026 announcement from S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI), Kaiko and Derivnex describes it as the first OTC swap transaction on Canton and the first OTC derivative referencing a fully tokenized index on distributed-ledger infrastructure. Those “first” descriptions are claims made in the announcement, not independently verified findings.
What the transaction involved
The benchmark was the iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index. The announcement’s reference to an “S&P iBoxx Index” does not mean the S&P 500: it identifies this specific index of U.S.-dollar liquid investment-grade bonds.

DRW and Marex entered into a total-return OTC swap referencing that index. In an OTC swap, counterparties negotiate a contract privately to obtain or manage exposure to an asset or benchmark without directly owning it. That general description does not reveal the legal or economic terms of this particular trade.
The announcement says Kaiko tokenized the benchmark on Canton, and Derivnex represented the transaction there. The index itself was the reference for the swap; tokenization provided a digital representation of the benchmark and its permitted use, rather than turning the underlying bonds into tokens.

What “tokenized index” means here
According to the announcement, Kaiko’s token combines benchmark data with access permissions and usage rules. The stated purpose is to let authorized participants use index data in digital financial workflows while retaining S&P DJI’s licensing and intellectual-property controls. The release does not provide the token’s technical specification, explain its transferability, or describe how permissions are enforced in code.
Tokenizing the index also did not eliminate the need for official benchmark values. Kaiko distributed signed official S&P DJI index values, which Derivnex used to value the swap position through its lifecycle. The announcement does not detail the signing method, update frequency, or any independent validation process for those values.

How the trade was represented on Canton
Derivnex represented the trade on Canton as a smart contract containing its transaction terms. The release describes that contract as a shared, synchronized record for DRW and Marex to coordinate valuations and other lifecycle events as the trade continued.

In this workflow, the CDM is the model Derivnex uses to represent transaction and event information; the announcement does not establish that every participant or system used the same implementation.
- Benchmark and permissions: Kaiko tokenized the index data on Canton, with access rules intended to preserve licensed use.
- Valuation input: Kaiko distributed signed official index values for Derivnex to use in valuing the position.
- Trade record and lifecycle: Derivnex represented the swap terms in a Canton smart contract and supported shared coordination between the counterparties.
What may come next—and what is not established
The announcement describes connecting Derivnex-managed positions with digital cash and collateral on Canton as future functionality. If implemented, that could allow margin, collateral and contractual payments to move on the same infrastructure. The release does not say this capability was live for the DRW–Marex transaction.
It also discloses no notional amount, pricing, maturity, cash flows, collateral terms, detailed allocation of counterparty risk, or independent performance results. It therefore does not establish that the arrangement reduced costs, improved settlement speed, or produced other measurable efficiency gains. The participating companies’ descriptions of a shared workflow are not a substitute for transaction-level terms or comparative evidence.

Derivnex CEO George Harrington said the platform provides “a common digital representation of a trade from affirmation through its full lifecycle.” S&P DJI Chief Product Operating Officer Cameron Drinkwater described the transaction as showing how established benchmark infrastructure can support new institutional market structures. Kaiko CEO Ambre Soubiran emphasized licensed access and institutional governance, while Marex Solutions CEO Nilesh Jethwa called it a practical example of representing and managing OTC derivatives on distributed-ledger infrastructure. These are participants’ characterizations of the transaction.

The reported transaction brings together a licensed bond benchmark, official valuation data, an OTC derivatives workflow and a distributed-ledger record. Its significance, as presented by the companies, is the attempt to make those elements work together in an institutional trade while retaining benchmark-use controls.
Best Value
Whether that model proves more efficient or becomes interoperable with other systems cannot be determined from the announcement. Assessing it would require details such as the token’s access and privacy controls, how valuation data is verified, how lifecycle events are handled, and whether collateral and payments can actually be integrated. The release describes elements of that design but provides no comparative performance evidence.
