A reliable Drupal 11 production VPS in 2026 needs a supported PHP and database combination, enough memory for Composer and contributed modules, and the server access required for scheduled maintenance. The checklist below separates Drupal’s documented platform floors from practical VPS capacity, so you can buy or configure a server without treating a development setup as production-ready.

Drupal 11 VPS requirements at a glance

Component Documented minimum or status Practical production guidance
PHP PHP 8.3 or newer Keep PHP on a supported 8.3-or-later branch; later Drupal 11 minor releases can raise the floor when upstream PHP support ends.
MySQL 8.0 or newer Use the InnoDB storage engine.
MariaDB 10.6 or newer Use the InnoDB storage engine.
PostgreSQL 16 or newer, with pg_trgm Your provider must permit the extension to be installed and enabled.
SQLite 3.45 or newer Development only; not appropriate for a busy editorial production site.
PHP memory_limit 64M core minimum Plan 256M for production; 512M can help diagnose white-screen errors.
System memory No official Drupal VPS minimum At least 1GB RAM is practical; 2GB is safer when Composer runs on the VPS or several modules and a cache layer are active.
Composer Drupal’s obsolete overview recommends about 1GB available memory Leave headroom or run dependency updates on a separate build machine.

The PHP and database floors come from Drupal 11 documentation and the Drupal Association’s 2024 Drupal 11 announcement. Memory and VPS figures are operational guidance rather than Drupal core guarantees.

PHP: version, memory and extensions

Use PHP 8.3 or later

PHP 8.3 is the floor for Drupal 11. Older PHP releases are unsupported, even if a hosting control panel still offers them. Drupal removes PHP versions after their upstream security-support window closes, so a later Drupal 11 minor release may require a newer PHP branch. Select a VPS image whose package repository can move between supported PHP versions without rebuilding the server.

Before installing Drupal, verify the command-line interpreter and the web-server PHP runtime separately. It is common for php -v in a shell to show one version while PHP-FPM or an Apache module serves another. Your deployment is ready only when the web request and CLI report the intended supported version.

Set memory for the workload, not just the installer

Drupal core lists a 64M PHP memory_limit minimum. That value is deliberately conservative and leaves room for contributed modules, but it is not a comfortable target for a production site. Drupal’s older overview documentation describes 128M or 256M as typical production values; 256M is a sensible starting point for a new VPS. The PHP packages guidance suggests trying 512M when investigating a white-screen failure, which is a troubleshooting setting rather than a universal requirement.

PHP memory and total VPS RAM are different limits. A 256M per-process limit does not mean a 256MB VPS is sufficient: the operating system, database, PHP workers, web server, cron jobs and caches all need memory at the same time. Keep swap as an emergency buffer, not as a substitute for physical RAM.

Install the extensions Drupal and modules expect

The documented extension list includes PDO, XML, GD, OpenSSL, JSON, cURL, mbstring and zlib. The exact package names vary by Linux distribution and PHP packaging method, and individual contributed modules can add dependencies. Check the loaded modules with php -m, then repeat the check through the web runtime after PHP-FPM or the web server is configured.

Missing XML, mbstring or cURL commonly causes Composer or module installation errors. Missing GD can break image handling. A module can also require an extension that is not needed by Drupal core, so treat a successful core install as a starting point rather than proof that every planned feature will work.

Choose a database that is actually usable on your VPS

Database Drupal 11 floor Production notes Managed-service check
MySQL 8.0+ InnoDB is required because Drupal relies on transactions and row-level locking. Confirm the service uses InnoDB by default and allows normal schema operations.
MariaDB 10.6+ Use InnoDB for the same transaction and locking requirements. Check the provider’s engine defaults and upgrade policy.
PostgreSQL 16+ The pg_trgm extension is required. The account or provider must allow CREATE EXTENSION; a locked-down service that blocks it is unsuitable.
SQLite 3.45+ Suitable for local development, not a production site where several editors save content. Do not choose a file-backed SQLite setup for a multi-user live site.

MySQL or MariaDB

Either option meets the Drupal 11 version floor when the server is using InnoDB. Do not silently accept a legacy MyISAM default: Drupal’s transaction and row-locking behavior depends on InnoDB. On a managed database, ask which engine is used for newly created tables and whether the service permits the required indexes and schema changes.

PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL is a supported production choice, but the extension requirement is easy to miss. Drupal needs pg_trgm; a managed provider that prevents CREATE EXTENSION cannot satisfy this requirement. Test extension installation before committing to the service, and include the extension in your infrastructure documentation so a restore or new environment is created consistently.

SQLite

SQLite is useful for a quick local build or automated development test. It is not a production choice once several editors are saving content because file-level locking and concurrent writes become operational limits. Moving from SQLite to a server database should happen before launch, not after the site has accumulated production data.

How much VPS capacity should you buy?

RAM is the first sizing decision

Drupal does not publish an official “one VPS size” recommendation. A practical third-party baseline is 1GB of RAM for Drupal 11. Treat that as a starting point for a modest site, not a performance guarantee. Choose 2GB when Composer will run on the server, when you expect several contributed modules, or when you will run an application cache or object-cache service alongside PHP and the database.

Editors, image processing, search indexing, queue workers and traffic spikes can all increase concurrent memory use. If the database is on the same VPS, its buffer and connection requirements compete with PHP. If the database is managed separately, the web VPS can devote more memory to PHP workers and cache processes, but you still need enough capacity for deployments and cron jobs.

CPU, disk and network capacity are workload-dependent

The Drupal requirements do not specify a universal vCPU count, disk size or bandwidth figure. Size those resources from your content and traffic model: media-heavy sites need more persistent storage and backup capacity; large imports and image derivatives need more CPU; high concurrent traffic needs enough PHP workers and database capacity. Keep free disk space for database growth, temporary files, Composer’s working directory and backups rather than allocating only the initial codebase size.

Useful server capabilities

Practical hosting guidance commonly adds shell access for Composer and Drush, a real system cron service, PHP OPcache, and an external object cache once logged-in users exist. These are operational improvements, not additional Drupal core platform minimums. Confirm that your VPS provider allows the required daemons, firewall rules and scheduled jobs instead of assuming a web-only plan can provide them.

Prepare and verify the VPS before installing Drupal

  1. Select a supported operating-system image. Use a maintained 64-bit Linux distribution with security updates and package repositories that can provide PHP 8.3 or newer, your chosen database version and the listed PHP extensions.
  2. Check both PHP runtimes. Run php -v over SSH, then inspect the PHP-FPM or web-server runtime through your normal diagnostic page. They must use the same supported branch.
  3. Confirm extensions. Run php -m and verify PDO, XML, GD, OpenSSL, JSON, cURL, mbstring and zlib. Recheck after enabling PHP-FPM because CLI and web configurations can load different php.ini files.
  4. Set a production memory limit. Configure memory_limit at 256M as a starting point, restart the relevant PHP service, and verify the effective value. Increase it temporarily toward 512M only when diagnosing a documented memory failure and when total VPS RAM can absorb the extra usage.
  5. Provision the database. For MySQL or MariaDB, verify InnoDB. For PostgreSQL, install pg_trgm and test that the Drupal database account has the required extension privileges. Do not use SQLite for the live multi-editor site.
  6. Install Composer with enough headroom. Drupal’s older overview calls for roughly 1GB of memory for Composer. If the VPS is smaller, build dependencies in CI or on a workstation and deploy the resulting, tested artifact instead of forcing Composer into an exhausted server.
  7. Configure scheduled maintenance. Create a real system cron entry for Drupal’s scheduled tasks and verify that it runs under the correct account. A browser request is not a dependable substitute for system scheduling.
  8. Enable observability and backups. Monitor RAM, swap, disk, PHP errors, database errors and cron completion. Test restoring both the database and uploaded files before launch.

Plan around Drupal’s 2026 release calendar

Drupal 10 reaches end of life on 9 December 2026

Drupal’s core release schedule lists 9 December 2026 as Drupal 10 end of life, with Drupal 10.6.0 as the final minor release. Earlier wording tied support to the release of Drupal 12; the dated December end-of-life entry supersedes that phrasing. A site still on Drupal 10 should budget time for a supported upgrade rather than waiting for the final weeks of 2026.

Drupal 12 is scheduled for the week of 7 December 2026

The current schedule places Drupal 12.0.0 and Drupal 11.5.0 in the week of 7 December 2026. An earlier August target is no longer the date shown on the schedule. Drupal 12’s final PHP, database and memory requirements were not established in the material available for this article, so do not size a 2027 VPS around unverified claims about higher version floors. Check Drupal’s official platform-requirements announcement before a Drupal 12 migration.

Follow the required Drupal 11 stepping stone

Sites on Drupal 11.3.x or earlier must update to Drupal 11.4.0 or a later 11.x release before moving to Drupal 12. Migrate Drupal and Migrate Drupal UI were removed from core, so review your migration tooling and contributed-module compatibility before scheduling the major-version change. Take a tested backup, rehearse the update on a staging clone and confirm that every module supports the target release.

Common VPS failures and their fixes

Composer reports that it ran out of memory

First distinguish PHP’s per-process limit from total system RAM. Raising memory_limit cannot create physical memory. Stop unnecessary services, add RAM, or run Composer on a build host and deploy the tested result. Keep at least the Composer headroom described above when dependency resolution must happen on the production VPS.

The site shows a white screen during installation or updates

Inspect PHP and web-server logs, confirm the effective memory limit, and check that all required extensions are loaded by the web runtime. A temporary increase toward 512M can help confirm a memory-related failure, but leave the permanent value aligned with the VPS’s total capacity and expected concurrency.

PostgreSQL setup fails despite a supported version

Check whether pg_trgm is installed and whether the Drupal database account can create or use the extension. A provider that blocks CREATE EXTENSION may pass a version check while still failing Drupal’s actual requirements; move to a service that exposes the needed capability.

Content saves fail or the database behaves unpredictably

For MySQL and MariaDB, verify that Drupal tables use InnoDB rather than a legacy engine. For SQLite, move the site to MySQL, MariaDB or PostgreSQL before concurrent editorial activity becomes normal. Also check disk space, database connection limits and whether cron jobs are completing.
