Its help documentation says it does not offer client-side encryption, so the company holds the keys needed to decrypt stored files. Your own sharing and sign-in settings create much of the practical risk. Dropbox’s 2026 Form 10-K also discloses unauthorized access to the Dropbox Sign production environment in April 2024. Read the three parts below as separate questions: what Dropbox protects, what it cannot protect, and what it has disclosed.

The good: what Dropbox documents about protecting your files
Dropbox’s help article How Dropbox keeps your files secure, updated February 5, 2026, lists its core controls. These are Dropbox’s own descriptions, not findings from an independent tester.

Encryption at rest and in transit
Dropbox says files at rest are encrypted with 256-bit AES, and that SSL/TLS protects data moving between its apps and its servers. These cover two different exposure points: traffic intercepted on a network, and stored data. Neither changes who can decrypt your files inside Dropbox’s systems. The key-control section below explains that limit.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Two-factor authentication
Dropbox offers two-factor authentication with a text-message code or an authenticator app. The help article does not describe hardware security key support, so do not assume that option is available on your account.
Testing and business security controls
The help article describes recurring security testing. Dropbox’s Security With Dropbox page describes admin controls, application and network security testing, penetration testing, risk assessments and compliance monitoring. Its Dropbox Security Whitepaper adds policy review, employee training, testing and risk assessment. Both are vendor documents. They are not a current independent test report, and they do not show how the controls performed in any particular period.
Does Dropbox use end-to-end encryption?
Not in the default setup described in Dropbox’s help. The help article states: “Dropbox doesn’t offer client-side encryption.” It also says users cannot create their own private keys. Client-side encryption means the keys that decrypt a file stay with the user, so without it the keys used to decrypt your files are not held only on your devices.
Dropbox also says end-to-end encryption and advanced key management are available. The help article does not state that either is included for every account or plan, so confirm eligibility and setup in your account before describing your files to a team or client as end-to-end encrypted.

Can Dropbox employees see my files?
Dropbox’s Is Dropbox safe to use? page, updated April 25, 2025, says other Dropbox users cannot see your files unless you share them. It also acknowledges that a small number of employees may need access in limited circumstances, which its privacy policy describes. The safe-use page does not list those circumstances, so read the privacy policy directly rather than relying on a summary. Encryption at rest does not limit those access circumstances, because the service’s own systems hold the decryption capability.
The choices you still control
Most day-to-day exposure in a cloud storage account comes from sharing and sign-in choices rather than from the encryption layer. Dropbox’s safe-use guidance points to the following areas.
Shared links and folders
Dropbox’s help says files are private by default, but sharing links and shared folders create additional access paths. Review who can reach each link and who is a member of each shared folder. Remove access when a project ends or when someone leaves your team.

Connected third-party apps
Dropbox says users can inspect and revoke authorizations for third-party apps. Each connected app is an ongoing path into your account, so revoke apps you no longer use instead of leaving them connected.

Two-factor sign-in
Turn on two-factor authentication using an authenticator app where possible, or a text-message code if that is the only option you have. Two-factor authentication makes a stolen password less useful, but it does not stop every method of account compromise.
The bad: what encryption does not cover
Encryption is useful, but it addresses specific threats. It does not prevent the following:
- Account takeover through a stolen or reused password, or a successful phishing attempt that captures a sign-in
- Accidental oversharing through a link, a shared folder or a permission set too broadly
- Ransomware or malware on a device that syncs to Dropbox, since the synced copies on that device are readable to the user’s session
- Risk from third-party apps you have authorized, which Dropbox’s controls do not govern for you
- Future breaches of any service, which Dropbox itself says its measures cannot guarantee
The ugly: the Dropbox Sign incident and ongoing threat risk
Dropbox’s 2026 Form 10-K, filed February 20, 2026, states that on April 24, 2024 the company became aware of unauthorized access to the production environment of Dropbox Sign, its e-signature service. The filing discusses litigation and regulatory scrutiny connected to the incident, and it warns of possible financial, operational and reputational consequences. This article does not report how those matters have been resolved.

The scope is limited to Dropbox Sign. The filing does not establish that every Dropbox storage account or file was affected, and this article does not claim a broader Dropbox storage breach. Read the filing itself in the Form 10-K for Dropbox, Inc. if you need the wording.

What the filing says about future guarantees
The 10-K risk disclosure says: “these security measures have not fully protected our systems in the past and cannot guarantee security in the future.” This is the company’s own risk statement. It is not an independent finding that Dropbox is currently compromised, and it is not a measurement of how often incidents occur.
Threats Dropbox says it faces
The same filing says Dropbox has faced security threats and expects to keep facing them. It names malware, ransomware, phishing, denial-of-service attacks, misuse and network attacks. It says the company uses penetration testing and red-team exercises and continues steps to strengthen cybersecurity. It also acknowledges that it may fail to detect or prevent incidents.

Compliance: what the HIPAA and BAA coverage covers
Dropbox’s Dropbox Standards and Regulations Compliance page says qualifying Standard, Advanced, Enterprise and Education customers may sign a business associate agreement (BAA) for HIPAA/HITECH needs. It also says Dropbox makes available a SOC 2 examination that evaluates related controls. The table below separates what is documented from what is limited.
| Item | What Dropbox documents | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| BAA for HIPAA/HITECH needs | Available to qualifying Standard, Advanced, Enterprise and Education customers | Other plans are not listed as qualifying in the cited compliance text. Not a blanket certification of every account or customer workflow. |
| Electronic BAA signing in the Admin Console | Available | Restricted to US-based customers |
| SOC 2 examination | Made available by Dropbox and described as evaluating related controls | The examined scope, audit period and exceptions are set out in the report itself, not in the summary page |
Independent assurance versus Dropbox’s own statements
Dropbox says its Trust Center includes security, privacy, compliance and reliability reports, including SOC and ISO documents. Access requires a request, and some private reports may require a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). Details are in Dropbox’s help article What is the Dropbox Trust Center?, updated December 17, 2024.
A report is more useful than a logo list or a compliance claim. Before you rely on one, check:
- Which product the report covers. Dropbox Sign is a separate product named in the 10-K, so a report for one product does not automatically cover another.
- The audit period the report covers, and whether it is current for your decision.
- The controls within scope and any exceptions the auditor noted.
- Whether the report is an attestation by an independent auditor, as opposed to a Dropbox description of its own practices.
