If a deleted file or folder is still within the recovery period for your Dropbox account and has not been permanently deleted, restore it from Deleted files on Dropbox.com. Recovery time depends on your plan, what happened to the item, and any team retention policy.
Restore a deleted file or folder

Open Deleted files. Search or use the available filters to find the item.

Select the file or folder and choose Restore. Dropbox says the item returns to the folder it was deleted from.

If you are already inside the relevant folder, Dropbox also provides a Show deleted files route through Folder settings. See Dropbox’s current deleted-file recovery instructions.
How long can you recover deleted Dropbox files?
Dropbox’s published standard deleted-file recovery periods, listed in its 2026 help guidance, vary by plan:

| Professional, Essentials, Standard, Business | 180 days |
| Advanced, Business Plus, Enterprise, Education | 365 days |
These are Dropbox-published plan periods, not independent test results. Add-ons may provide longer history, while a team’s data disposition policy may permanently delete some content earlier. Check the plan and policy that apply to your account; Dropbox’s data-retention policy also describes the standard periods and earlier deletion under disposition policies.

If the deleted item does not appear
Absence from the list does not always mean the file has passed its recovery window. Check these possibilities before concluding that it is gone:

Wrong account: Confirm you are signed in to the Dropbox account where the file was stored.

Search filters: Clear filters and check whether the list is limited by a team member or another selection.

Moved, renamed, or unshared: Look in the likely destination folder and check recent activity. The item may not have been deleted.

Shared-folder access: A user with Can edit access may be able to restore a deleted shared file. A Can view user cannot restore it themselves; ask the folder owner or an authorized editor.

Team policy or eligibility: The file may have been removed earlier under a disposition policy or be outside the account’s available recovery period.

If a file should still be eligible but is missing, or a restoration is stuck, contact Dropbox Support. Include the file name, approximate deletion date, original folder, whether it was shared, your access role, and relevant Events information. Do not send your password or authentication codes.
Choose the recovery feature that fits

Dropbox’s version history guidance lists corresponding 30-, 180-, and 365-day periods for its stated plan groups. Use the history shown for the account; upgrading or adding history should not be treated as bringing back a version that is already outside the available history.
For widespread changes, check whether Rewind is available on your plan and review Dropbox’s Rewind guidance before starting a rollback.

When Dropbox cannot restore the file
Dropbox Help states: “If you selected Delete permanently to delete a file or folder, it cannot be recovered.” Dropbox also says support cannot recover files permanently deleted or outside the account’s available version history. See its recovery guidance and support guidance for lost or deleted files.
If you had a separate copy on a device or in another backup, check that copy independently. Dropbox’s Backup restore instructions apply when the relevant computer folders were backed up; they are not a way to reverse a permanent deletion from Dropbox itself.
