DroidDeck and Moonlight solve different problems: DroidDeck runs Steam and compatible games on supported Android hardware, while Moonlight streams games from a separate PC to your Android device. Choose DroidDeck if your device meets its demanding hardware requirements and you want local play; choose Moonlight if you have a gaming PC and a suitable network for remote access.
What is the difference between DroidDeck and Moonlight?
Despite the “game-streaming” wording, only Moonlight is a streaming client. A Moonlight Android device receives video from a host PC and sends its controls back to that PC. DroidDeck instead sets up Steam on the Android device, using an ARM64 Proton and FEX compatibility path to run supported games locally.

DroidDeck is a community project and says it is not affiliated with Valve; it is not SteamOS. Neither the project documentation nor Moonlight’s listing establishes that every Steam game will work, or that one option is universally faster.

Will your Android device run DroidDeck?
Droid-Deck’s current repository README, accessed October 7, 2026, specifies Android 9 or newer and an Adreno 730 or newer, or an Adreno 8xx GPU. It lists Mali, Xclipse, PowerVR, and Adreno 710 as unsupported. Check the exact GPU in your device’s specifications rather than relying on its brand or “gaming” label: compatibility is device-specific, and the project says its hardware validation is limited.

The README estimates about 3 GB for the runtime and another 1.1 GB for the desktop and emulators. These are project estimates, not independent measurements. It says root is not required, but DroidDeck does involve more than installing a streaming client: install the APK from the project’s Releases, install the Linux runtime, and adjust an Android setting before launching Steam.
- Confirm the device runs Android 9 or newer and has a supported Adreno GPU.
- Install the DroidDeck APK from the project’s Releases, then install its Linux runtime.
- In Android Developer options, turn off Restrict child processes before launching Steam. The README describes a “Fix it for me” prompt for Android 12 and 13 if the setting is unavailable.
DroidDeck’s release descriptions include Steam Big Picture, a handheld-oriented library view, Android-app support, dual-screen features, a Linux desktop, and emulators. These are project-described features, not assurances that a particular game or emulator will run well on a particular device.

What does Moonlight need?
Moonlight needs a separate PC configured to host the session. Google Play’s Android listing describes streaming games, programs, or the full desktop over a local network or the internet. It names GeForce Experience for NVIDIA hosts and Sunshine for hosts with any GPU, so Moonlight is not limited to NVIDIA hardware.
The same listing recommends a mid- to high-end wireless router, a strong connection to the Android client—with 5 GHz Wi-Fi highly recommended—and Ethernet from the host PC to the router. Those recommendations matter because streaming performance varies with the client and network. Moonlight supports Android gamepads as well as keyboard and mouse; the listing also describes codec and streaming features, but actual feature availability can depend on the client and host setup. Google Play lists an update date of September 7, 2026.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose DroidDeck if your Android device meets the stated OS and GPU requirements, you have room for its estimated downloads, and you want games to run on the handheld itself.
- Choose Moonlight if you have a gaming PC to host the games and want to access its library or desktop from Android, locally or over the internet.
- Neither is a fit as described if your Android GPU is outside DroidDeck’s supported list and you have no suitable host PC for Moonlight.
There is no established performance winner: DroidDeck’s project documentation warns that results vary by device, while Moonlight’s listing says streaming varies by client and network. The available official product sources do not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark, so choose based on where you want the game to run and which prerequisites you already have.
