Yes—DroidDeck can run Steam and some Windows PC games locally on supported Android handhelds. It launches Valve’s Steam client in Big Picture and uses Valve’s ARM64 Proton compatibility layer; it is not simply a way to stream games from another computer. Whether it works well depends on the Android version, GPU, drivers and individual game. The project is not affiliated with Valve.
What DroidDeck does—and what it does not promise
DroidDeck is an open-source Android app that provides a Steam Deck-like front end on supported handheld hardware. The app runs Steam on the Android device, then uses Proton to translate the Windows game environment for the Linux-based runtime. Steam and Proton assets are fetched from Valve on the device; the project says it does not redistribute Valve’s proprietary files.

This is local execution, so the Android device itself does the work. That differs from remote play, which depends on a separate PC or cloud host and a network connection. The word “emulation” is often used loosely for running PC games on Android, but DroidDeck’s documented approach is a Linux and compatibility-layer stack rather than a claim that every Windows PC game is emulated successfully.
Steam’s library is not a compatibility guarantee. A game may fail to launch, have rendering or control problems, or run poorly, and an update to the game, driver or runtime can change the result. The project says both compatibility and performance vary by device and that hardware validation is limited.

Check your Android version and GPU first
The Droid-Deck README lists Android 9 or newer and specific GPU categories. Check the exact GPU in your device’s specifications; a Snapdragon model name alone does not establish eligibility. The project does not certify specific commercial handheld models in the cited documentation.

These categories are eligibility guidance, not a promise that every device with a listed GPU or every game will work. Drivers, cooling, memory, game demands and software versions can all affect the result. For a prospective purchase, investigate a Snapdragon Android gaming handheld only after checking its exact GPU and looking for current reports from people using the same device; the project’s materials do not validate a particular model.

Install DroidDeck and complete first-launch setup
- Download the APK from the official Droid-Deck GitHub Releases page. The README says the project has no standalone website and warns against download links from sites claiming to represent the team.
- Install the APK, then install the Linux runtime in the app. Allow about 3 GB for the runtime, according to the project README.
- Check Android’s child-process restriction if Steam will not start. The README says some devices or Android versions require turning off “Restrict child processes” in Developer options. On Android 12 and 13 devices where the setting is unavailable, first launch provides a “Fix it for me” button to help automate setup.
- Press Play and sign in to Steam. Steam downloads on first launch, so the initial setup requires additional download time and storage beyond the runtime estimate.
Use Steam and any game according to their own account, licensing and system requirements. DroidDeck is not an official Valve app.
Optional desktop, apps and controls
DroidDeck is not limited to its Steam front end. Its optional Desktop & apps setup adds a Linux desktop and access to apps and emulators. The README estimates about 1.1 GB of additional space for Desktop & apps, on top of the runtime. Features and performance depend on device and configuration.

The project’s 0.3.0 release notes, dated October 2, 2026, describe Steam Deck-style controls, Steam Input virtual pads, an Xbox 360 controller option, second-screen input options for dual-screen devices, a performance overlay and GPU driver pairing. They also describe ARM64 Flathub apps, user-added AppImages and Flatpaks, and in-app update channels. These are release-note features, not a guarantee that every option behaves identically on every device.
The desktop experience also has limits: the README says desktop compositing uses software rendering and Firefox sandboxing is reduced under proot. That makes the optional desktop a distinct, more constrained environment than a conventional desktop Linux installation. For troubleshooting, the app keeps logs in app-private storage and can share them in a scrubbed ZIP for reports.

How to judge whether it is right for your setup
- Start with hardware eligibility. If your Android version or GPU falls outside the README’s supported categories, Steam gaming through DroidDeck may not be viable; experimental hardware warrants especially cautious expectations.
- Look for device- and game-specific evidence. A report for a different GPU, driver, game version or DroidDeck release may not apply to your setup. Do not assume a title works just because Steam lists it for another platform.
- Plan for installation overhead. Reserve the documented runtime space and, if wanted, the separate desktop-and-apps allowance; Steam then downloads during initial launch.
- Consider controls and form factor. Built-in handheld controls, touch input, an external controller or a second screen can change how practical a setup feels. The documentation does not require a particular controller accessory.
