To read status from a Bambu Lab printer over MQTT, connect an MQTT client to the printer’s IP address on port 8883 with TLS enabled, log in as bblp with the printer’s LAN access code as the password, subscribe to device/{DEVICE_ID}/report, and send JSON commands to device/{DEVICE_ID}/request. These parameters come from the community-maintained OpenBambuAPI reference. Bambu Lab does not officially support MQTT access, so treat them as documented community behavior rather than a vendor API.
Connecting and reading reports is the straightforward part. Sending commands is where firmware differences matter: a successful broker connection does not show that a given printer will accept an unsigned command. As of October 2026, community documentation describes signed commands on firmware released after January 2025, so verify the flow against your own printer before building anything that controls it.

What you need before connecting
- A Bambu Lab printer on your local network. The mqtt-bambu bridge project suggests assigning the printer a DHCP reservation so its IP address does not change.
- The printer’s IP address, its serial number (the device ID used in the topic paths), and its LAN access code, which is shown on the printer’s network settings screen.
- An MQTT client that supports TLS and username/password authentication. Any mainstream client or library will do, provided it can accept the printer’s certificate (see the next section).
- Your printer’s model and exact firmware version written down. Behavior differs by model and firmware, and the documentation available does not establish a complete compatibility matrix.

Handling the printer’s certificate
The mqtt-bambu bridge documents TLS against the printer’s self-signed certificate. A strict client will reject that certificate by default. You have two reasonable options: pin or import the printer’s certificate into your client, or disable certificate verification for a quick test on a network you control. The second option removes protection against impersonation on the LAN, so use it only for short tests.

If the subscription connects and JSON messages start appearing, the local endpoint and credentials are working. If it fails, check the access code first, then the IP address, then certificate handling.
Message format
Requests are JSON objects grouped under a type such as info or system. Each request carries a sequence_id and a command. The report echoes the sequence identifier so you can match responses to requests, and a response may include a result and a reason field. Match on sequence_id rather than on arrival order, because status messages arrive continuously and may interleave with your responses.

Reading status: partial updates and full snapshots
Reports are not always complete. The OpenBambuAPI reference says P1-series printers may send only the values that changed. A client that wants the full state therefore needs to keep a local copy and merge each delta into it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To request a complete status object, the reference documents a pushall command. It cautions against sending pushall to a P1P more often than every five minutes, because frequent requests may cause lag. The mqtt-bambu bridge takes the same approach: it merges deltas and requests periodic snapshots instead of polling constantly.

- Refresh with a full snapshot on a slow schedule, not in a tight loop.
- If your client shows stale temperatures or progress, a snapshot request is the first thing to try.
Option: use the mqtt-bambu bridge
If you want the printer’s status in a home automation system rather than writing your own client, the mqtt-bambu project connects to a printer and republishes normalized status to a separate MQTT broker that your automation tools already use. It supports two connection paths, and the choice affects what keeps working when the internet is down.
| Approach | Connection path | Credentials and dependencies | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud MQTT | Bambu’s cloud broker | Account login and session handling | Depends on the cloud account and service |
| Direct LAN MQTT | The printer’s own broker | Printer IP, serial number, LAN access code | Needs local network reachability; the bridge documents TLS with the printer’s self-signed certificate |
The bridge documentation states that LAN Only printers are no longer reachable through the cloud broker. If you rely on cloud access for other tasks, confirm that before switching a printer to LAN Only. These behaviors are as the bridge documents them and should not be assumed for other tools.

Firmware, command signing and what to check
A community protocol capture, based on Bambu Handy v3.x communicating with a P1S, reports that firmware released after January 2025 requires X.509 certificate authentication and uses signed command payloads. That capture is not an official compatibility matrix. It does not show that every model or firmware version uses the same flow, so treat signing as a requirement to verify on your specific printer.
When a command appears to connect but does nothing, work through these checks in order:

- Versatile Nozzle Options: The AD5X supports four nozzle sizes (0.25mm to 0.8mm) for full creative control. The 0.4mm nozzle comes pre-installed for versatile, everyday printing. For specialized tasks, optionally upgrade to the ultra-fine 0.25mm nozzle for miniature details, or to the 0.6mm/0.8mm nozzles to slash print time on large, sturdy models.
- Confirm the printer’s model and firmware version, and whether your reference predates the post-January 2025 change.
- Confirm the command is published to
device/{DEVICE_ID}/request, not the report topic, and that the JSON is valid. - Check the
resultandreasonfields in the report for the matchingsequence_id. - If the reference describes signed payloads and yours is unsigned, the printer may silently ignore the command. Build signing into your client before testing control workflows again.
- Confirm your client is not reconnecting in a loop, which can look like a command failure.
Security and support: Developer Mode and the vendor’s position
On January 20, 2025, Bambu Lab announced Standard Mode and an optional Developer Mode. The announcement names the X1, P1, A1 and A1 Mini as models for Developer Mode, and says that when a user enables it manually, MQTT, the live stream and FTP can be left open. The company states that users who enable it are responsible for securing their local network.
The same announcement describes LAN mode through Bambu Connect as requiring neither internet access nor an account. It also includes this statement, quoted exactly: “Please note that Bambu Lab will not be able to provide customer support for this mode, as the communication protocols are not officially supported.”
The announcement does not say whether a printer in Standard Mode allows local MQTT clients. Check the printer’s current settings and test the behavior yourself before assuming either way. Whatever you find, do not expose the printer’s MQTT port to the internet, and do not treat a LAN connection as private if other devices on that network are untrusted. Keep the LAN access code secret, because it is the only credential the local broker requires.
Practical summary of the setup
Use a DHCP reservation, connect over TLS on port 8883 as bblp with the LAN access code, subscribe to report, and merge deltas into a local state object. Send commands only after confirming your printer’s firmware accepts them, and expect signing to matter on firmware released after January 2025.
