Drip irrigation is often a better fit where water needs to reach individual plants or crop rows, or where wind would disrupt overhead spray. Sprinklers provide broader, rainfall-like coverage and work for most crops. Neither method is automatically more water-efficient or economical on every farm: crop layout, soil, terrain, wind, water quality, system design, upkeep, and local costs all affect the result.
How do drip and sprinkler irrigation differ?
Drip irrigation
A pressurized network sends water through emitters to the soil near the crop’s root zone. The localized application suits individual plants, trees, and row crops, and avoids overhead spray drift.

Sprinkler irrigation
A pressurized pipe network sprays water over the crop or field in a pattern similar to rainfall. Its broader coverage can serve most crops, but wind can disrupt the spray and make application less uniform.
Which is more water-efficient, drip or sprinkler irrigation?
There is no universal winner based on the method’s name alone. Drip can reduce water applied outside the crop’s root zone, but the outcome depends on the system, field, crop, and management. Sprinkler performance likewise depends on design and conditions, with wind a particular concern.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports that farmers switching from furrow or sprinkler systems to drip could cut water use by “30 to 60 percent” in results from many countries. This is a broad historical report, not a guaranteed saving or a controlled, universal comparison; results vary with the previous method, crop, conditions, and management. FAO’s localized irrigation overview provides the context.
Field application efficiency is not the same as basin-wide water conservation. Reducing runoff or drainage losses on one field can also reduce return flows that other downstream users rely on. A farm-level saving should therefore not automatically be described as an equal saving for the whole water basin. FAO’s water-savings guidance explains this distinction.

Which irrigation system is best for a crop and field?
Begin with crop geometry and field conditions, then assess water supply and the farm’s ability to install and maintain the equipment. FAO guidance says drip and sprinkler systems are generally favored over surface methods on steep or uneven land, while noting that wind can disturb sprinklers.
| Field or farm factor | Drip irrigation | Sprinkler irrigation |
|---|---|---|
| Crop layout | Fits individual plants, trees, and row crops. FAO’s general guidance does not recommend it for close-growing rice. | Broad coverage; can be used for most crops. |
| Wind | Local delivery avoids overhead spray drift. | Wind can disrupt spray distribution and uniformity. |
| Soil and terrain | Frequent, small applications can suit sandy soils with rapid infiltration; system design matters. | Can also provide frequent, small applications and suit uneven terrain. |
| Water quality | Sediment can clog emitters. Dissolved salts may make drip particularly suitable in some conditions. | Sediment can clog equipment. FAO says sprinklers can be more effective than surface methods for salt leaching. |
| Equipment and upkeep | Requires pressurized delivery and careful maintenance; filtration needs and emitter-clogging risk should be considered. | Requires pumping and a design that supports uniform application. |
Sediment and dissolved salts are different water-quality concerns: sediment can clog either system, while salt-management choices depend on local conditions. Ask a local irrigation or water-quality specialist to assess the source water and field before choosing equipment.

What should a farm compare before investing?
Compare the complete cost and expected farm outcome rather than choosing by equipment label. Include installation, pumping and other operating costs, maintenance, likely yields, crop prices, water availability, and the value the farm places on saving water.
A 2013 modeled maize comparison considered medium and large fields of 5 ha and 32 ha. Its rankings changed with decision-maker priorities: alternatives favored for water savings were generally not the same as those favored for economic results. The study is evidence that priorities and scenarios matter, not a current price comparison or a universal field-trial verdict. FAO AGRIS study record.

Watering plants accurately and efficiently is no longer a chore with our high quality and complete drip irrigation kits!
Drip also has upkeep requirements that belong in the cost calculation. Sediment can clog emitters, and the system depends on pressurized delivery; filtration, pressure regulation, and maintenance must be suited to the water source and field design.
How much does drip irrigation cost?
There is no current regional price established here. FAO’s localized-irrigation chapter gives a historical range of US$1,200–2,500 per hectare for drip systems and mentions one lower-cost system below US$250 per hectare. The chapter does not state a publication year for those figures, so neither should be used as a present-day quote or market benchmark. A practical way to choose
- Map crop and layout: identify whether the field has rows, individual plants, trees, or close-growing crops.
- Assess the field: check soil infiltration and water storage, slope, uneven areas, and typical wind exposure.
- Check water: establish available quantity and quality, including sediment and dissolved salts.
- Confirm system requirements: account for pressure, pumping, filtration, uniformity, labor, and maintenance capacity.
- Compare farm economics: weigh installed and recurring costs against expected yield, crop value, water constraints, and the farm’s priorities.
For row-crop farms considering drip, drip irrigation tape is one system class assessed in the 2013 maize modeling comparison; its suitability still depends on field design and operating requirements. Ask a qualified local designer to size the system and its filtration and pressure components to the crop, water source, and field.
