DreamHost makes introductory and renewal prices easy to compare on its plan cards; HostGator publishes regular rates, but you should check the Renewal Center for the rate that applies to your account. Your best fit depends on the full term charged upfront, renewal cost, site and storage needs, backup expectations, and whether you prefer DreamHost’s custom panel or cPanel.
This comparison uses USD pricing and provider plan details retrieved October 7, 2026. It covers shared and WordPress-hosting decisions, but does not establish a current independent, controlled DreamHost-versus-HostGator speed or uptime winner.

DreamHost vs HostGator: what is the main difference?
The clearest difference in the available plan information is pricing transparency. DreamHost displays its first-term and renewal prices together. HostGator’s published chart gives regular prices, while its site directs customers to the account Renewal Center for their applicable renewal rate. Both bill the selected hosting term upfront, so a monthly equivalent is not necessarily the amount due at checkout.

Is DreamHost cheaper than HostGator?
It depends on the term and on whether you are comparing a promotional first term or a regular rate. DreamHost’s plan-card prices below include promotional monthly equivalents and stated renewal prices. HostGator’s three-year figures are regular-price equivalents, not introductory offers, and its one-month regular prices are shown for a different term. These figures are useful for understanding each provider’s published pricing structure, but they are not a like-for-like checkout comparison.
DreamHost Web Hosting prices
DreamHost’s official plan page, retrieved October 7, 2026, lists the following monthly equivalents. It says the full selected term, plus taxes, is charged at checkout.
| Plan | First-year monthly equivalent | Stated renewal rate | Storage | Websites |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Launch | $2.89/month for the first year | $10.99/month after one year | 25 GB | 25 |
| Growth | $3.99/month | $12.99/month | 50 GB | 50 |
| Scale | $9.99/month | $25.99/month | 100 GB | 100 |
DreamHost also lists daily automated backups with these plans. Its monthly visit figures are estimates, not hard traffic caps. Check the plan card and checkout for the exact term, total charge, and taxes before buying.
HostGator shared-hosting regular prices
HostGator’s official Hosting Price Chart, retrieved October 7, 2026, lists these regular prices. The three-year monthly equivalents represent the full three-year total divided by 36; HostGator bills the chosen full term upfront.
| Plan | Three-year regular-price equivalent | Three-year total | One-month regular rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hatchling | $10.99/month | $395.61 | $17.59/month |
| Baby | $16.49/month | $593.61 | $24.19/month |
| Business | $21.99/month | $791.61 | $30.79/month |
These are HostGator’s published regular prices, not promotional signup rates, and prices can change. HostGator says a customer on an introductory or discounted rate keeps that price until the hosting plan renews; check the account Renewal Center for your own applicable rate.
How to compare the actual cost
- Compare the same billing duration, not one provider’s first-year promotion against the other’s regular three-year price.
- Use the full amount charged at signup, including taxes and any separately priced add-ons, rather than relying only on a monthly equivalent.
- Record the stated renewal rate and when it begins. A low promotional rate can be followed by a substantially higher renewal charge.
- Check domain terms separately. DreamHost says annual and multi-year Web Hosting, DreamPress, and Managed VPS plans include a free one-year domain registration. HostGator’s free-domain offer applies to eligible Shared, WordPress, or Cloud customers on 12-, 24-, or 36-month cycles; it covers the initial purchase term, with domain renewal charged at the regular rate after the first year.
Which host has better renewal prices?
DreamHost is easier to evaluate from the public plan page because it places each plan’s renewal rate next to its promotional price. HostGator’s official chart provides regular rates, but the company says to consult the account Renewal Center for the rate applicable to a customer. That distinction makes the public comparison less direct; it does not by itself establish that one provider’s eventual renewal cost will be lower for every customer.
Rank #3
Before choosing either host, compare the renewal rate for the exact plan and term you intend to buy. For HostGator, confirm it in the Renewal Center; for DreamHost, verify the plan card and checkout details.

DreamHost lists 25, 50, and 100 websites and 25 GB, 50 GB, and 100 GB of storage on Launch, Growth, and Scale respectively. The page also presents monthly visit estimates, which DreamHost describes as estimates rather than hard limits.
HostGator documents shared tiers with different site and storage allowances, but the figures in the available price chart do not establish a directly equivalent set of allowances for the three DreamHost plans. Check the current HostGator plan page for the precise tier limits and included features before signing up; plan names and available products can change.
Rank #4
For a small or new site, avoid paying for capacity based on a tier name alone. First estimate how many separate sites you will host, how much storage your files and media need, and whether the provider’s traffic description is an estimate or a hard limit.
How do their backups differ?
DreamHost says it keeps an average of two weeks of website backups and five days of database backups. It also says long-term backups are not included in hosting plans. This describes retention, not a guarantee that every file, database change, or recovery scenario will be available when needed. If you need longer retention or a particular recovery point, confirm the available backup options and keep an independent copy of important site data.

The cited HostGator shared-hosting materials describe plan features but do not establish a comparable backup schedule or retention period. Do not assume the plans provide equivalent backup protection: verify the current terms for the exact HostGator plan and decide whether you need a separate backup solution.

DreamHost vs HostGator for WordPress: which control panel?
DreamHost uses its own panel
DreamHost says it does not offer cPanel and instead uses an in-house control panel. Choose it if you are comfortable learning DreamHost’s interface; people who expect the familiar cPanel environment may find that difference important.
HostGator describes cPanel for shared hosting
HostGator’s shared-hosting materials describe cPanel. That may suit you if you already manage sites in cPanel, but panel familiarity is a preference rather than proof of better hosting quality. Confirm the panel and available tools for the specific WordPress or shared product you plan to purchase.
What about migrations, SSL, refunds, and support?
HostGator’s shared-hosting page describes free SSL and migration features. It also states a 30-calendar-day hosting refund guarantee and 24/7 hosting-related support by telephone or live chat. The guarantee excludes renewal charges, monthly terms, domain registration, setup, and add-on fees. These are provider-stated features and terms, not independent measures of support response quality; review the current policy before purchase.
The available evidence does not establish a comparable DreamHost migration offer, refund term, or support-response result, so it is not possible to declare a support or service-quality winner on that basis.
Is DreamHost or HostGator faster or more reliable?
No current independent, controlled, like-for-like performance test of DreamHost and HostGator is established here. That means there is no defensible speed or uptime winner to report. Provider uptime guarantees or marketing claims are not observed test results, and the listed plan features and prices do not demonstrate how either host will perform for your particular site.
Which is better, DreamHost or HostGator?
Choose according to the trade-offs that matter to your site, rather than treating the published tiers as interchangeable.
Quick Recap
- Consider DreamHost if seeing promotional and renewal prices together helps you plan, its stated site and storage allowances fit your needs, and its backup-retention description and custom panel suit your workflow.
- Consider HostGator if cPanel is your preference or its current shared-plan features fit your requirements. Before committing, verify your account’s renewal rate, full upfront term cost, and the exact allowances for your chosen plan.
- For either provider, confirm domain and email conditions, backup coverage, and the full checkout total. Neither set of provider pages establishes a tested performance advantage.
