1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDreamHost’s self-managed VPS suits people who want Linux root access and full control of the software stack, and who are prepared to configure, patch, back up and secure the server themselves. If you want DreamHost to take on server software, security patching and backups, the company sells a different product, Managed VPS, and the self-managed plan is the wrong choice.
This review is based on DreamHost’s published plan specifications, pricing, policies and knowledge-base documentation. It does not include independent benchmarks, uptime measurements or customer-support tests, and it is not a report of hands-on server testing. What the self-managed VPS includes
DreamHost’s VPS product page lists the following features for its self-managed Stack plans:
- Full Linux root access, so you can install and change system-level software.
- AMD EPYC CPUs and NVMe storage.
- A choice of Linux operating systems. DreamHost’s documentation names Ubuntu, Debian and AlmaLinux.
- Docker and KVM support, plus an app library.
- DDoS protection and 24/7 support.
- Unmetered bandwidth for billing purposes (explained below).
DreamHost describes the product in its VPS overview as giving “direct control of the Linux environment for running custom applications and workloads.” That is the provider’s own description of the product, not an independent evaluation.

Plans and prices
The self-managed plans are sold as “Stack” tiers. DreamHost lists a promotional monthly price for the first three months and a higher renewal price after that.
| Plan | vCPU | RAM | NVMe storage | Monthly price, first three months | Monthly price after that |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stack 4 | 2 | 4 GB | 75 GB | $8.99 | $15.99 |
| Stack 8 | 2 | 8 GB | 150 GB | $13.99 | $21.99 |
| Stack 16 | 4 | 16 GB | 250 GB | $22.99 | $34.99 |
| Stack 32 | 8 | 32 GB | 450 GB | $45.99 | $59.99 |
These figures are the prices shown on DreamHost’s VPS page when this article was prepared. DreamHost states that the full term plus taxes is charged at checkout, so check the order page for the exact amount and billing term before you buy, because promotions change. Compare the renewal price, not the introductory price, when estimating what the server will cost over a year or more.
Who manages what: self-managed VPS vs Managed VPS
The most important decision is not which size to pick but which management model you want. DreamHost’s documentation says customers configure, maintain and secure the server environment, while DreamHost maintains the underlying hardware and network. Its support for the self-managed product covers hardware, network and connectivity. It does not extend to your server software, application stack, backup configuration or security settings.

| Area | Self-managed VPS (Stack plans) | Managed VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Root or sudo access | Yes, full Linux root access | No root or sudo access; SSH is included |

| Application-level support | Not included | DreamHost says it provides application-level support |
| 30-day money-back guarantee | Not offered, according to DreamHost’s VPS overview | Not covered in the DreamHost sources cited for this article |
The Managed VPS features in the table come from DreamHost’s Managed VPS page. Do not assume any of them apply to the self-managed plans.
Managed VPS plans and prices
Managed VPS plans are listed with promotional prices for the first three years, followed by higher renewal prices. The current page also lists daily backups, SSL and email with the managed plans.
| Plan | Cores | RAM | NVMe storage | Monthly price, first three years | Monthly price after that |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VPS Business | 2 | 2 GB | 60 GB | $10.00 | $24.99 |
| VPS Professional | 2 | 4 GB | 120 GB | $20.00 | $46.99 |
| VPS Enterprise | 4 | 8 GB | 240 GB | $40.00 | $92.99 |
| VPS Premier | 6 | 12 GB | 360 GB | $60.00 | $114.99 |
Because the managed promotion runs for three years, a fair cost comparison covers the renewal rate across the whole term. DreamHost also positions its DreamPress product as the better fit for WordPress users who want a hands-off experience. That is DreamHost’s own positioning; this article has not tested whether it holds for any particular site.

What “unmetered bandwidth” does and does not mean
DreamHost’s Resource Allocation Policy says VPS, Managed VPS and Dedicated Server plans have no monthly visitor thresholds and that bandwidth is unmetered for billing purposes. It also says bandwidth may be temporarily limited in rare cases to protect infrastructure stability. The phrase therefore describes how DreamHost bills transfer, not a guarantee of throughput.
The server still has finite CPU, memory and storage. A plan with 2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM will run out of headroom well before any bandwidth figure matters, so size the plan to the workload first.
Setup: decisions you cannot undo cheaply
DreamHost’s setup documentation describes a few steps that are hard to reverse. Work through them in this order:
Rank #4
- Speed up your tasks with AI: Unlock new levels of productivity and creativity by upgrading to Intel Core Ultra processors with built-in AI.
- Supports multiple monitors: Connect up to four FHD monitors using DisplayPort and Daisy Chaining*. Or connect two 4K displays using HDMI 2.1 port and DisplayPort.
- Effortless upgrades: The tool-less entry and removable side panel let you quickly access the internal components, making upgrades convenient and stress-free.
- Ready for business: Keep your data secure with a hardware TPM security chip. And when you need to step away from your desk, simply secure your desktop using the built-in lock slot or padlock loop.
- Style meets sustainability: Dell Tower Desktop seamlessly combines elegance with sustainability. Its sleek, modern design, crafted from recycled materials and featuring refined corners, makes it a stylish addition to any home or office.
- Choose the base operating system or app image before launch. DreamHost says it cannot be changed afterwards without reprovisioning the server.
- Set your credentials during provisioning. DreamHost does not store them, so save the root password and any access details before continuing.
- Set up SSH-key authentication. DreamHost recommends it over password login.
- Keep the key and password safe. If you lose the SSH key or root password, DreamHost’s documentation says you must provision a new server.
Backups, refunds and support boundaries
On the self-managed plan, you are responsible for backups. DreamHost’s hosting plan FAQs and VPS overview both state that the unmanaged product does not include server management or application-level support. The VPS overview also says the unmanaged product has no 30-day money-back guarantee, so test your setup on a short timeline before you commit to a longer term.
Do not transfer features from Managed VPS, such as daily backups or software patching, to the self-managed plan when you compare the two. DreamHost’s own product pages draw that line, and it matters most when something breaks at 2 a.m.
DreamHost’s VPS page also says, in marketing copy, “You manage your applications and software stack — but we don’t disappear.” Read that as the company’s description of its infrastructure support, not as a commitment to fix your application or configuration.

Data center location and control panel
- Location: DreamHost’s knowledge base says all VPS servers are in its US East data center in Ashburn, Virginia. The sources reviewed for this article do not establish whether customers can choose a different region.
- Operating system: The FAQ says the environment is Linux only.
- Control panel: DreamHost says it uses its own in-house control panel rather than cPanel.
What the available evidence does not show
DreamHost’s specifications, prices and policies are the provider’s own claims. The sources reviewed here do not contain independent performance benchmarks, uptime measurements or evaluations of DreamHost’s support quality. Any statement about how fast the servers are, how reliably they stay online or how quickly support responds would go beyond the evidence. Before committing, run your own load tests and watch the provider’s status information over a period that matches your use case.
Who should choose the self-managed VPS
Use the following checks to decide whether the self-managed plan fits your situation:
- You need root access to install custom software, tune services or run Docker or KVM workloads.
- You are comfortable with Linux administration, including SSH keys, firewalls, package updates and log review.
- You will set up your own backup routine and restore process.
- You are comfortable with no 30-day money-back guarantee on this product.
- Your memory and storage needs fit a Stack plan, and you have checked the renewal price.
If several of those statements do not describe you, a Managed VPS or a hosted website product is more likely to match what you need.
