When a design discussion keeps circling, the fastest fix is often to stop talking and sketch the system on a shared surface, with both people correcting the same picture. A rough diagram makes each person’s mental model visible, so the group can tell whether it is disagreeing about the design or about the system the design applies to. The advice comes from Asael Shinder’s DEV Community post “Draw the Picture Before You Argue About It,” published on September 30. The copy we could access shows the day and month but not the year.
Why the same design argument goes in circles
Shinder’s post opens with a scenario that is useful as an illustration rather than a reported case. Two engineers are debating which service should own a customer record. One pictures the customer service sitting behind billing, so every customer lookup passes through billing first. The other pictures it beside billing, as a peer that both billing and the storefront call directly. Each argument is internally sound. Each person is criticizing a design the other never proposed.

That is the core problem the article identifies. A verbal description forces both listeners to rebuild the system in their heads, and two people rebuilding the same paragraph will often produce two different architectures. The disagreement that follows may be partly about the imagined system rather than the actual choice of ownership. The practical question becomes: what are we both picturing?

- Put a shared drawing surface where both people can see it. A blank whiteboard works. Paper works too, and the article explicitly treats paper as an alternative. No special drawing skill or paid software is needed.
- Sketch the current state first, then the proposal. Keep the drawing limited to what the decision requires. If the question is who owns the customer record, the diagram does not need every logging component or deployment detail.
- Draw boxes for system parts and arrows for calls or flows, and label each arrow with the information moving along it. A label such as “customer ID and plan tier” on an arrow from billing to the customer service tells the group more than a box labeled “billing integration” ever will.
- Invite the other person to take the pen and correct the picture. A correction can reveal an assumption that neither person had stated aloud. Once the assumption is on the board, the group can debate it directly.
- Photograph or screenshot the agreed sketch and add it to the meeting notes. Participants can then refer back to the same artifact instead of reconstructing the discussion from memory.
What a sketch settles and what it does not
The drawing settles one thing well: what system the group is discussing. Agreement on the diagram is not agreement on the decision. Once both people see the same boxes and arrows, the design tradeoffs still need to be argued, and those tradeoffs may still divide the group. The sketch removes the hidden disagreement about the picture so that the remaining disagreement is visible and honest.
The method is also not a guarantee. The post offers practical advice, not a controlled study, a success rate, or a measured outcome, and it does not claim that drawing always ends an argument. Treat it as a way to expose and correct mismatched assumptions, then judge for yourself whether it helps in your team.

Paper or whiteboard
The article names no competing diagramming products. The meaningful choice it supports is between a quick paper sketch and a shared whiteboard. The comparison below is our reading of the workflow, not a formal evaluation.
| Factor | Paper sketch | Shared whiteboard |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility to the group | Good for small groups seated around one sheet; harder to see from across a room | Usually visible to the whole room |
| Ease of correction | Erasing is awkward; corrections often mean redrawing the box or adding a new sheet | Easy to erase and redraw; the other person can take the marker without interrupting the flow |
| Saving with meeting notes | Photograph the sheet and attach the image to the notes | Photograph or screenshot the board before it is erased |
| Setup cost | Paper and a pen | A board and markers, or a room that already has one |
In practice, the best surface is the one everyone can reach and nobody has to explain. A sheet on a table is enough for a two-person design review. A board is better when the room is larger or the picture will change several times.

Arguing fairly after the picture is shared
Once the group has a shared diagram, the argument itself still needs structure. The historical writing guide The Making of Arguments by J. H. Gardiner offers principles that fit well with the sketch. These are writing principles from an older guide, not empirical evidence about engineering teams, but they map cleanly onto the next stage of a design meeting.
- Reduce the subject to a single arguable proposition. “Customer records should be owned by the customer service” is arguable. “Let’s fix the architecture” is not.
- Identify the main issues. For the ownership question, these might be latency on lookups, change control, and who is paged when the record is wrong.
- Agree on relevant facts where possible. The sketch helps here: once the arrows are labeled, the group can check whether the call volume or data flow it describes is actually true.
- Treat opposing points fairly. Gardiner states that the aim of argument is agreement. Restate the other person’s position on the board before rebutting it.
A workable order for the meeting
Put the picture first, the proposition second, and the tradeoffs last. If the group cannot agree on what the current state looks like after two or three corrections, stop arguing about the design and resolve the factual question first. If the picture agrees and the disagreement remains, the meeting has moved from confusion to a real decision, which is what the sketch was for.
