What is the difference between DRAM and NAND flash?
DRAM (dynamic random-access memory) and NAND flash serve different purposes. DRAM gives a processor quick access to data and applications in use. NAND flash provides persistent storage for software and files.

In everyday consumer language, “memory” often means RAM and “storage” means flash. Technically, both are memory technologies. A device does not choose one instead of the other: it can use DRAM for active work and NAND for persistent storage.
What does DRAM do, and which devices use it?
DRAM temporarily holds information a processor needs while running programs. Because it is volatile, its contents do not remain when power is removed. Micron lists DRAM in computers, servers, networking and communications equipment, consumer electronics, automotive systems and industrial systems. Lower-power DRAM is commonly used in smartphones, tablets and laptops.

On a phone, low-power DRAM supports active applications and tasks. It is separate from the phone’s internal flash storage, which holds items such as photos, videos, the operating system and settings.
What does NAND flash do, and which devices use it?
NAND flash keeps stored data without power, making it suitable for files and software that need to remain available after a device is turned off. It is used in SSDs, smartphones, tablets, computers, USB drives and memory cards.

Raw NAND, managed flash and SSDs
A NAND chip is not necessarily a complete storage product. Micron explains: “NAND requires a controller, either internal or external, and specific firmware for error code correction (ECC), bad block management, and wear leveling.” Raw NAND therefore needs management functions to operate as part of a storage system. Managed NAND integrates a controller in the package; an SSD combines NAND with a controller and firmware.
Can you upgrade DRAM or NAND storage?
That depends on the particular device, not simply on whether it uses DRAM or NAND. Some computers have replaceable RAM modules or SSDs; other devices use components that are not user-replaceable. Phones, for example, commonly have internal flash storage, but that does not establish that it can be upgraded.
