What DRAM does—and what RAM means
RAM is a broad category of memory used for data a system may need to access while it is operating. DRAM, or dynamic random-access memory, is a common type of RAM. Samsung Semiconductor summarizes the power-off distinction this way: “All RAM types, including DRAM, are volatile memory that stores bits of data in transistors.” DRAM also needs periodic refresh to keep its data while powered.

DRAM comes in several product families
- DDR is used in computer memory modules. Check the system’s supported generation and module type before buying RAM; the label alone does not establish compatibility.
- LPDDR is a DRAM family commonly associated with mobile devices.
- GDDR is used for graphics memory.
- HBM is a high-bandwidth DRAM family used in specialized accelerator and high-performance computing contexts. Samsung describes its HBM products as vertically stacked DRAM.
These families serve different system roles and are not all interchangeable. Samsung’s overview of DRAM, its DDR page, and its HBM page describe these product categories.
What NAND flash does
NAND flash is nonvolatile memory: it can retain stored data without power. It is used as persistent storage in products such as SSDs, SD cards, and USB flash drives. In a computer, it holds the operating system, applications, and files when the device is switched off.

NAND cells need supporting management in a storage device. Micron explains that NAND designs rely on a controller and firmware for work such as error correction, bad-block management, and wear leveling. In other words, a NAND chip is not simply a drop-in replacement for system RAM; the storage device’s controller and firmware help make it usable and reliable.
Is an SSD RAM, SRAM, or DRAM?
An SSD is a storage device, generally based on nonvolatile NAND flash—not a type of RAM. Micron describes SSDs as NAND-based storage and notes that NVMe SSDs use PCIe. Some SSDs also include a small amount of DRAM to cache information such as the mapping between logical data locations and physical locations in NAND. That DRAM assists the SSD’s management; it does not turn the drive itself into DRAM or SRAM.

A DRAM-less SSD still contains NAND for persistent storage. “DRAM-less” describes the absence of that separate DRAM cache, not an absence of storage memory. The design and performance consequences depend on the specific drive and workload, so the label alone is not enough to predict how a drive will perform.

Which one should you choose?
It depends on the job: add compatible DRAM if you need more working memory, or choose NAND-based storage if you need room for files and applications. RAM capacity and SSD capacity measure different resources, so one cannot substitute for the other.

- Confirm the device supports the memory generation and form factor you plan to buy.
- Check the system’s capacity limits and supported configuration.
- Choose the correct kind of DRAM for the device; desktop modules, laptop memory, graphics memory, and specialized accelerator memory are not interchangeable.
If you are upgrading storage
- Check the device’s supported form factor and interface before choosing an SSD.
- For an NVMe drive, verify that the system supports the drive’s physical fit and PCIe connection.
- Consider the workload and product specifications; NAND performance is mediated by the drive’s controller and firmware.
There is no useful universal claim that DRAM is “faster than NAND” without specifying the products, interface, and workload. DRAM is designed for working memory, while NAND storage devices vary in performance and are managed through controllers and firmware. The cited manufacturer materials explain their roles and architecture, not a benchmark comparison.

Why both appear in the same device
A computer can use DRAM for active work and an SSD containing NAND for persistent storage at the same time. The operating system and applications are stored on the SSD, then data needed during a session can be loaded into working memory. Likewise, a NAND-based SSD may use a small DRAM cache internally while retaining NAND as its persistent storage medium. Each technology fills a different role in the system.
Samsung’s memory overview places DRAM and NAND among the distinct memory technologies used across computing and storage products.
