Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor an accessible sink or shower clog, try a plunger first; if it does not clear the blockage, a hand drain snake or cable is a reasonable next mechanical option. Neither tool is a proven universal winner: the right choice depends on where the clog is and whether you can reach it safely.
Which tool should you try first?
Start with a plunger when the sink or shower drain is accessible and you can make a seal around its opening. Household guidance from Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic-environment service, recommends covering the overflow with a cloth, adding enough water to cover the plunger’s rubber cup, and pumping a few times before checking whether the water drains freely.

If plunging does not clear the clog, a drain snake or cable can reach a blockage mechanically. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development also lists a snake or auger as an option for a clogged sink. These recommendations support a practical sequence, not a guarantee that one tool will work on every fixture.

| Situation | Better first choice | Why | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow or blocked sink or shower with an accessible drain opening | Plunger | Government household guidance recommends plunging, with the overflow covered and the cup submerged for a seal. | No cited guidance guarantees success or gives a universal number of plunges. |
| The plunger has not cleared the blockage, or it needs mechanical reach | Hand drain snake or cable | Homeowner guidance identifies a snake or auger as a mechanical clearing option. | The appropriate cable length, size and compatibility depend on the drain; the cited guidance does not establish universal specifications. |
| Hair repeatedly collects at a shower or bath drain | Hair catcher for prevention | The Swedish Chemicals Agency recommends a hair filter at the floor drain or bathtub drain. | A filter helps keep hair out; it does not remove a clog already in the pipe. |
| A clog is difficult or keeps returning, or the work involves major plumbing repair | Professional assessment | HUD recommends an expert plumber for major plumbing repairs, and the Swedish regulator advises hiring a plumber for difficult blockages. | Local rules and responsibility vary. |
How to try a plunger
- Remove visible hair or debris at the drain opening if you can do so safely. The guidance cited here does not give instructions for removing drain covers.
- If the fixture has an overflow opening, cover it with a cloth to help the plunger form an effective seal.
- Position the plunger cup over the drain and add enough water to cover its rubber cup.
- Pump a few times, then check whether the water runs away freely. Cadw does not specify a universal number of plunges for every drain.
When a drain snake makes sense
If plunging does not dislodge the blockage, a hand snake or cable is a reasonable next mechanical tool. A snake works by reaching into the drain, so its suitability depends on the drain’s design and the location of the clog. The cited guidance establishes it as an option, but does not prescribe a universally suitable cable length, gauge or technique. If you are not competent to use one or to check a sink trap, stop and seek qualified help rather than forcing the work.

What about chemical drain cleaners?
Advice depends on the plumbing context. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s septic-system guidance advises septic-system owners to avoid chemical drain openers for a clog and suggests boiling water or a snake instead. Separately, Sweden’s Chemicals Agency recommends mechanical options such as a plunger, drain rod or cable, or trap cleaning, and advises avoiding corrosive drain cleaners if choosing a cleaner. These are not blanket claims that every drain cleaner is unsafe for every drain.
If a chemical cleaner has already been used, the sources cited here do not provide a complete safe-handling procedure for plunging afterward or taking a trap apart. Do not combine it with other products or open the trap without first consulting the product label and qualified guidance.

When to stop and get help
Persistent or difficult blockages and major plumbing repairs are reasons to seek professional help. The sources do not define a universal point at which every household should stop DIY work, and plumbing rules differ by location. For example, Western Australia’s government guidance permits a homeowner or occupier to clear a blocked fixture or waste pipe with a plunger, while requiring other water-supply, sanitary and drainage plumbing work to be done by a licensed plumber or permit-holder. That rule applies to Western Australia, not everywhere.
Is one tool proven to work better?
No head-to-head success rate, average clearing time or cost comparison is established by the sources cited here. The useful conclusion is conditional: begin with a plunger for an accessible clog, then consider a snake if plunging fails and the drain is suitable for one.
