A wrong answer to a Sphinx riddle is normally a one-shot failure: the riddle’s reward is forfeited, and you cannot repeat that riddle in the ordinary sequence. Stop playing immediately. If the failed answer has not been autosaved, closing the game may let you return to the previous state; otherwise, load an earlier inn save and accept that progress since that rest may be lost.
The broader effect depends on where you failed. The Mountain Shrine and Frontier Shrine stages do not have identical failure descriptions in published guides, so treat the individual riddle as lost and do not assume the Sphinx will return in the same playthrough.

What to do immediately after a wrong answer
Your first objective is to prevent the failed state from replacing your last usable save. Do not walk away from the shrine, open unrelated quests, rest, or continue exploring while deciding what to do.
Recommended Free Tools
- Stop input as soon as you recognize the mistake. Avoid triggering another rest or any activity that could create a new autosave.
- Check whether the game has visibly saved. The exact indicator and controls differ by platform, and no platform-specific procedure is established for this quest. If an autosave notification appears after the answer, assume the failed state may already be permanent on that save.
- If no autosave appears, close the game promptly. Quitting before the failed answer is written is the only situation in which force-closing can plausibly preserve the earlier state. A normal menu exit or a platform-level close command is safer than continuing to play, but the guides do not guarantee a result on every platform.
- Restart and choose the earlier save. If the pre-riddle state is still available, use it. If it is not, select the most recent inn save that predates the mistake.
- Verify the result before answering again. Return to the shrine and confirm that the riddle, its prompt and the reward setup are restored. If the failed state remains, do not keep overwriting saves while trying random fixes.
PowerPyx and Push Square both identify an earlier inn save as the practical fallback. An inn save can remove any progress made since that rest, including exploration, combat, pickups and quest actions, so decide whether preserving the riddle attempt is worth that rollback.

What a wrong answer costs
The guides agree on the immediate consequence even when they describe the overall quest differently: each riddle is effectively a single attempt. A wrong response forfeits the reward attached to that riddle, and the normal sequence does not provide a second try.
| Question | Supported outcome | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Can the same riddle be answered again normally? | No | PowerPyx describes one try per riddle; Push Square says the failed riddle cannot be retried in the normal sequence. |
| What happens to that riddle’s reward? | It is lost | The relevant reward is forfeited when the answer is wrong. |
| Does one mistake end every Sphinx riddle? | Not established uniformly | Published guides differ by stage and by how they describe the quest’s ending. |
| Can you still earn Full Marks in that playthrough? | Usually no | PowerPyx says a wrong answer can lock you out of the Full Marks achievement or trophy for that playthrough. |
| Will the Sphinx definitely reappear? | Do not assume it | The available guides do not support promising that she can be found again after a saved failure. |
“Full Marks” is therefore a separate concern from the individual chest or reward. You might continue playing after losing one answer, but a complete-riddle achievement or trophy can still be unavailable for that playthrough.
Mountain Shrine and Frontier Shrine are different failure contexts
Mountain Shrine: the initial riddle set
The first group of riddles is associated with the Mountain Shrine. A wrong response there unquestionably sacrifices the affected riddle’s reward. Descriptions of whether the Sphinx immediately leaves or whether later riddles remain available are inconsistent across guides, so do not treat a single published statement as a universal rule for every Mountain Shrine failure.
If you have not seen an autosave since answering, use the close-and-reload approach first. If the answer is already saved, your reliable choices are limited to an earlier inn save or accepting the lost riddle. There is no supported in-game command that resets one completed answer while preserving all later progress.

Frontier Shrine: the later riddle set
The later group takes place at the Frontier Shrine. Windows Central specifically describes a wrong answer at this stage as ending the riddle game. GamesRadar distinguishes a single failure, which costs the reward and achievement progress, from multiple failures that end the quest, while GINX describes the Sphinx disappearing after a wrong answer.
Because those accounts are not fully consistent, use the conservative interpretation: a saved Frontier Shrine mistake may end the available riddle sequence, and you should not count on another visit restoring it. Reload an earlier save if preserving the stage matters to you.
Choosing between the two recovery methods
Quitting before autosave
This is the least disruptive option because it can preserve everything up to the moment before the answer. It only helps if the game has not written the failed response. Once the failed state is autosaved, repeatedly closing and reopening the game will normally load the same outcome rather than undo it.
Do not mistake a short delay for proof that the save was safe. Autosave timing can vary with nearby events, travel and quest transitions. After restarting, inspect the available save timestamps or slots and choose the one created before the answer whenever possible.

Loading an inn save
An inn save is the dependable fallback identified by the guides. It is a deliberate rest-point save rather than a guaranteed snapshot immediately before the riddle. Loading it can roll back substantial progress made after that rest, so record what you will lose before committing: completed fights, collected items, opened routes and other quest changes may all have to be repeated.
If you maintain several inn saves, select the newest one that predates the riddle. Do not overwrite that slot until you have confirmed that the Sphinx encounter is restored.
When no earlier save exists
If the failed answer has autosaved and no pre-failure inn save remains, the supplied guides do not establish a reliable repair. Continuing the game means accepting the forfeited reward and whatever stage consequence your version of the quest applies. Starting over solely to recover one reward is a personal time trade-off; the evidence does not establish a shortcut, reset item or guaranteed second encounter.

Players often describe three different events as “the Sphinx disappeared”: the reward chest is gone, the current riddle is no longer offered, or the entire riddle game has ended. Those are not necessarily the same state. Guide coverage also focuses on different stages: some descriptions concern the Mountain Shrine, while others explicitly concern the Frontier Shrine.

For that reason, separate the claims:
- Local failure: the answer you gave was wrong and its reward is forfeited.
- Stage failure: the shrine no longer offers the expected next interaction.
- Quest failure: the broader riddle sequence has ended in that playthrough.
Only the first point is consistently supported across the sources. The second and third should be described with the shrine and stage attached, not as a universal rule for every Sphinx riddle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting after you reload
The Sphinx or prompt is still missing
First confirm that you loaded a save created before the answer, not merely a later autosave. Check another earlier inn save if one exists. If every available save is after the mistake, the guides provide no verified method for restoring the interaction.
The reward chest is empty or absent
That is consistent with the failed-riddle outcome. A chest that does not appear after reloading may indicate that the failed state was saved or that you selected a save from after the failure. Do not expect the reward to be generated again without restoring a genuinely earlier state.

The quest appears to have ended at Frontier Shrine
Treat this as a possible stage-ending failure rather than proof that every earlier riddle was erased. Windows Central’s account specifically ties the riddle-game ending to a wrong answer at Frontier Shrine. Reloading an earlier save is the only supported way to attempt that stage again.

You quit, but the wrong answer remains
Closing the game cannot reverse a state that was already autosaved. At that point, compare your available inn saves. If none predates the answer, preserve the current save and continue with the lost reward rather than repeatedly overwriting files in search of an unverified fix.
How to protect future Sphinx attempts
Because each answer is consequential, prepare a save point before interacting with a new riddle.
- Rest at an inn before beginning a new riddle session, creating a known recovery point.
- Keep that inn save intact until the reward and the next stage are confirmed.
- Read the wording carefully and identify whether the prompt asks for an item, location, person, number or action.
- Do not answer while a dialogue transition, combat result or autosave is still processing.
- After the reward is secured, make your next normal save before moving on.
- At Frontier Shrine, be especially conservative: published coverage explicitly warns that a wrong answer there can end the riddle game.
This approach does not make an answer repeatable; it simply gives you a recoverable pre-riddle state. It also limits the amount of ordinary gameplay you must redo if you decide a missed reward or Full Marks progress is important.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat the available evidence does—and does not—confirm
Push Square, PowerPyx, GINX, GamesRadar+ and Windows Central all discuss the failure behavior, but they do not describe it identically. No official Capcom documentation confirming a universal retry rule or a platform-independent recovery procedure was located for this mechanic. The safest player-facing rule is therefore narrower than some guide headlines: answer as though every riddle is one attempt, protect an inn save beforehand, and reload promptly if you make a mistake.
That wording matters because a guide that says “the Sphinx leaves” may be describing one shrine, one stage or one version of the quest state. It should not be expanded into a promise that every wrong answer always ends the entire quest—or, conversely, that later riddles will always remain available.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- Wrong answer just happened: stop, avoid further saves and close the game before autosave if possible.
- Pre-answer save is available: load it and verify the riddle before proceeding.
- Only an earlier inn save exists: use it if the reward or Full Marks matters, knowing that later progress will roll back.
- All saves include the mistake: expect the affected reward to remain lost and do not assume the Sphinx will return.
- Failure occurred at Frontier Shrine: treat the entire later riddle game as potentially ended.
- Failure occurred at Mountain Shrine: record the lost riddle, but do not generalize one guide’s total-quest outcome to every initial-stage case.
