Use a tome for the specialization you want to teach that pawn; a different tome replaces its current specialization. Choose according to the trip: Forager helps locate upgrade materials, Chirurgeon provides item-based healing, and other options affect inventory, language, or pawn chatter.
What Pawn Specializations do
A specialization gives a pawn a particular utility outside its vocation. The effects can support exploration, healing, inventory management, or communication. Several pawns in the party can contribute different specializations, so the Arisen’s pawn does not have to cover every need.

Chirurgeon
A Chirurgeon pawn can use curatives on the Arisen and other allies on its own initiative. This provides autonomous item-based support, but it also uses the party’s supplies.
Forager
Forager marks locations of enhancement materials on the map, helping you find resources for equipment upgrades while exploring.

Hawker
A Hawker pawn can offer to buy selected items from your inventory for gold. Capcom warns that Hawker pawns may sell low-rarity items, so inspect what is offered before accepting. Capcom’s FAQ also confirms that these transactions can affect what the Arisen is carrying.
Logistician
A Logistician pawn combines materials and moves items between allies’ packs. Capcom notes that these pawns can automatically receive items or equipment from the Arisen, which can change what you are carrying without a deliberate manual transfer. If you want strict control over every item, this may not suit you.

Woodland Wordsmith
Woodland Wordsmith lets the pawn’s company understand Elvish. It is useful when interacting with Elvish-language content, rather than a general combat enhancement.

Aphonite limits a pawn’s speech except in select circumstances. Its main benefit is quieter exploration; no specific combat advantage is established.

How to change a pawn’s specialization
- Obtain the tome for the specialization you want. Players often call these items scrolls, but the game refers to them as tomes.
- Use that tome on the pawn you want to teach. The item description identifies the specialization it grants.
- That pawn takes on the new specialization in place of its previous one. There is no separate specialization toggle established by the available instructions; changing it means using another tome.
If you only need a particular ability for one journey, you can hire a support pawn that already has it instead. Check specialization information in the Riftstone pawn lists when choosing. Cross-player pawn hiring is limited to players on the same platform, according to Capcom’s support FAQ.
Which specialization should you use?
There is no universally best choice. Match the effect to the current party and your tolerance for automated inventory actions.

- For exploration and upgrades: Choose Forager when finding enhancement materials is a priority.
- For healing support: Choose Chirurgeon if you want a pawn to use curatives for the party and are comfortable spending those supplies.
- For inventory utility: Logistician can combine and transfer items; Hawker can offer to sell selected items. Both are less suitable if you want full control over carried items.
- For Elvish-language content: Bring Woodland Wordsmith in the pawn’s company.
- For less chatter: Aphonite is the option for a quieter companion.
Because specializations are carried by individual pawns, you can assemble a party around a specific outing rather than expecting one pawn to provide every utility.

Where to get specialization tomes
Reported routes include the Medicament Predicament quest in Melve and a later interaction with Flora for Chirurgeon, and the follow-up to The Heel of History for Forager and Logistician. Other tomes are associated with NPC affinity or location-specific rewards. These are guide-reported routes, not a complete official list: Capcom’s reviewed FAQ and the game manual do not enumerate every tome source.

Quest state, NPC interactions, and rewards can matter, so check the relevant quest and NPC details in your current playthrough rather than assuming a tome is available at a fixed point. The item description identifies the specialization each tome grants once you have one.
