Choose the combat style that sounds enjoyable, then use your Pawns’ commands, quest knowledge, and complementary party roles to make early adventures easier.
Which vocation should you choose first?
Choose by the kind of combat you want to play, not by trying to find a universally best option. The four starting vocations are Fighter, Mage, Archer, and Thief. Their different roles also help you decide what your party may need.

| Vocation | Combat style and party role |
|---|---|
| Fighter | Sword-and-shield melee combat; engages enemies up close and can protect the party. |
| Mage | Support through healing, weapon enchantments, and magic attacks. |
| Archer | Ranged attacks and opportunities to target enemy weaknesses. |
| Thief | Fast, mobile dagger combat. |
These descriptions come from the PlayStation overview; the official manual confirms the four starting choices. If you like close-range fighting, consider Fighter or Thief; for ranged attacks, consider Archer; for healing and enchantments, consider Mage. Those are role-based suggestions, not requirements.
Can you change vocation later?
Yes. Visit a vocation guild to change vocation, so your first choice does not lock you into a play style. The manual also says additional vocations become available as the story progresses. Warrior and Sorcerer, along with the Arisen-only Magick Archer, Mystic Spearhand, and Trickster, are later context rather than starting options; do not expect to choose all of them immediately. See Capcom’s Adventuring Basics manual for the change-vocation mechanic.
#1 Best Overall
- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
How do you tell your Pawns what to do?
Pawns are active party members who respond to commands and can support you both during and outside combat. Pay attention when they offer an idea: issuing a command just after a Pawn makes a suggestion can prompt that Pawn to follow through, including guiding you to a location or helping with a task. The exact controls depend on your platform, so follow the on-screen prompts rather than relying on a universal button mapping. The Capcom Pawn manual also says long-press Pawn commands can be enabled or disabled under Game Settings.
Can a Pawn lead you to a quest?
Often, yes. In the Quest menu, set the quest you want to pursue as a priority, then check its marker and listen for Pawn suggestions. Capcom’s support FAQ, last updated July 20, 2026, explains the marker meanings:

- A blue marker indicates that your Main Pawn may be able to lead you on the quest or provide useful information.
- An orange “I” or “II” indicates the first or second support Pawn may be able to help.
A missing marker does not prove that your Pawns have nothing useful to offer: some quests do not show markers, and NPC schedules or quest prerequisites can affect what appears. If you are stuck, Capcom says an in-game Diviner’s Salon or Reverent Shrine may offer a hint for a fee.
What should you focus on early?
Build a party with complementary roles
Think in terms of frontline protection, ranged coverage, and support—not a mandatory four-character formula. Fighters can engage at close range and protect the group; Archers add ranged attacks; Mages can heal, enchant weapons, and attack with magic. A Mage is worth considering if you want those support tools, but your preferred vocation and play style should shape the rest of the party.

Watch enemies and terrain
Pay attention to enemy strengths and weaknesses, the terrain, and the tactics your party is using. The PlayStation overview describes enemies reacting to player tactics, so look for openings rather than treating every fight as a simple stand-up exchange.
Use quest help and travel items with their limits in mind
Prioritize a quest to make Pawn guidance easier to spot. Ferrystones can help with travel, but Capcom’s FAQ says they cannot be used in some situations, including combat. Use beneath certain roofs can also fail without consuming the item, so a failed activation does not necessarily mean the stone was spent.
Rank #4
- Relic Expedition Cycle – Throughout their journey in the kingdom of Norgan, the Arisen must unearth and appraise forgotten relics to unlock powerful new weapons and skills.
- New Dungeon Challenges – The 12 freshly uncovered Lost Rites dungeons house trials designed by the Pathfinder to sharpen the Arisen’s skills and recover rare equipment once held by past Arisen that now lay dormant.
- Deeper Character Customization – New tattoo and hair options have been added to the already robust character creation tool in Dragon’s Dogma 2 so Arisen and Pawns can have even deeper personalization.
- Now on Nintendo Switch 2 – Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen brings the classic fantasy world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 and the Dark Arisen Expansion to the Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time.
- Pre-order Bonuses – The Norgan Fashion Set - Northern Attire will be available as a pre-order bonus, which can be accessed via in-game storage at launch.
Treat the Explorer’s Camping Kit as optional
The Explorer’s Camping Kit is an in-game item, not real-world equipment you need to begin playing. Capcom says it is stored in-game and may also be purchasable from in-game shops. Its presence in an edition or add-on does not make it a requirement for beginner progress.
