Dragonfly managing partner Haseeb Qureshi argues that moving crypto to fresh addresses is not a complete answer to a possible break in digital signatures. He wants blockchain networks to plan for recovery at the protocol level. That is a proposal, not a deployed feature—and the warnings prompting the debate do not mean ECDSA has been broken.
What Qureshi means by “bunker mode”
“Bunker mode” describes a defensive response to a possible cryptographic failure: move assets to fresh wallets whose public keys have not been exposed on-chain. The aim is to reduce the risk to holdings associated with exposed keys.

Qureshi’s objection is that this protects an individual holder only within limits. A holder might need to move assets again, and widespread theft or panic selling could harm the broader system even if some people had moved successfully. He summarized the limitation in a post quoted by Cointelegraph: “Bunker mode” would only protect investors’ coins as long as they weren’t moved from the fresh address.

His alternative is to think beyond individual wallet moves and prepare a network-level recovery path. The distinction is one of scope: address migration is a holder action; recovery planning would require protocol and validator coordination.

What “Cryptographic Recovery Mode” proposes—and what it does not establish
Cointelegraph describes Qureshi’s idea as a hash-based backup-signature plan that users could associate with their addresses, with validators able to force a recovery if conventional signatures were broken. In principle, that shifts the focus from protecting one key at a time to giving a network a way to respond if its usual signature mechanism can no longer be trusted.
There is no formal specification or deployment plan in the reporting. The proposal’s security assumptions, governance process, validator responsibilities, and handling of failed or disputed recovery attempts are not established there. “Cryptographic Recovery Mode” should therefore be understood as a proposed direction for planning, not a feature that users can enable or rely on today.

How the three positions differ
| Position | Focus | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Justin Drake’s warning | Possible future break of ECDSA before “qday” | He said it was reasonable to prepare for the possibility, with a worst-case timeline of “months, not years,” and recommended gradual migration to fresh wallets with public keys not exposed on-chain. |
| Haseeb Qureshi’s response | System-wide recovery, not only individual address protection | He argues that fresh-address moves do not fully address the consequences of a broad failure and has proposed a protocol-level recovery concept. |
| Vitalik Buterin’s caution | Risk from rushed user migrations | The Block reports that he agreed the risk deserves attention but warned that mistakes during hurried upgrades could cause losses. |
These positions address different parts of the problem rather than offering interchangeable instructions. Drake’s warning concerns preparation for a possible vulnerability; Qureshi emphasizes a network’s ability to recover; Buterin’s caution concerns the operational risk of reacting too quickly.
“Months, not years” is a worst-case warning, not a report of a break
Drake’s quoted wording was: “It is now reasonable to brace for the possibility that ECDSA breaks before qday, in the worst case, in months, not years.” The phrase “in the worst case” matters: this is a warning about a possible future mathematical breakthrough, not a prediction that a break will occur on that schedule.

CoinDesk reported no practical attack had been demonstrated at the time of its October 8 article. The cited coverage does not establish that AI has broken ECDSA, that wallets have been compromised by such a break, or that a network-wide failure is imminent.

| Reported figure | What the coverage associates it with | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 6.26 million BTC | Bitcoin in potentially vulnerable addresses | A secondhand estimate attributed by Cointelegraph to Glassnode, not independently verified here. |
| 4.33 million BTC | Address-reuse exposure | Cointelegraph says moving these coins to a fresh address would end this particular exposure; that does not address every possible risk. |
| 1.94 million BTC | Exposure associated with address format | A separate reported estimate attributed to Glassnode; it should not be added to the other figures as though the categories were confirmed to be mutually exclusive. |
The figures are estimates relayed through news coverage, not a direct review of the underlying Glassnode analysis. They do not say that all holders in those categories face the same risk or that a cryptographic break has occurred.

Quick Recap
What holders should take from the debate
- Do not treat a hypothetical failure as a current wallet emergency. The cited reporting describes a possibility, not a demonstrated ECDSA break.
- Avoid rushed migrations. Buterin’s reported warning highlights that mistakes in a hurried transfer or upgrade can themselves result in losses.
- Keep the two kinds of preparation distinct. Moving to a fresh address is an individual exposure-reduction step; a protocol recovery mechanism would require network-level design and coordination.
- Do not assume a backup signature concept is already available. Qureshi’s recovery proposal has no formal specification or deployment plan in the reporting.
