It is a separate Switch 2 product, however—not a free upgrade—and Square Enix says saves from the original Switch version cannot be transferred. That makes it a straightforward recommendation for newcomers, but a more qualified purchase for existing owners.
What kind of game is Dragon Quest XI S?
You play as the Luminary, a young hero drawn into a globe-spanning quest to save the world. The adventure follows a traditional turn-based RPG structure: assemble a party, choose tactics in battles and explore a large world as the story unfolds. Battle speed can be adjusted, which helps keep routine fights moving.
Its broad appeal is not limited to series veterans. Square Enix says prior experience with Dragon Quest XI or the wider series is not required. The original Switch product page says the adventure can occupy players for over 100 hours; that is Nintendo’s promotional description, not a measured completion-time estimate.
What does the Definitive Edition include?
The Switch 2 release retains the Definitive Edition’s substantial set of presentation and story options. The key additions over the original release include character-focused story chapters, Japanese voices alongside additional English voice content, an orchestral score and the ability to switch between 3D and a retro-inspired 2D presentation. Side quests also take players to worlds from earlier Dragon Quest games. Square Enix lists the Definitive Edition features as part of the Switch 2 product.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The option to play in 2D is more than a cosmetic toggle: it gives the adventure a distinct retro presentation for players who prefer that style. Switching between 2D and 3D is one of the edition’s defining features, while the additional character chapters offer more story beyond the central journey.
How does the Switch 2 version compare with the Switch version?
Square Enix says both versions have the same story and game content. The main stated difference is the Switch 2 version’s hardware-specific graphics options. The official Switch 2 modes are listed as follows; these are publisher specifications, not independent performance measurements.

| Mode | Official target | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Performance Priority | 1080p / 60 fps | Lower resolution target in exchange for a higher frame-rate target. |
| Quality Priority | 1440p / 30 fps | Higher resolution target with a lower frame-rate target. |
Those options let players choose what matters more to them: image detail or frame-rate smoothness. They do not indicate that the game’s content has been expanded for Switch 2.
Can you play it on the original Switch, or transfer a Switch save?
No on both counts. Nintendo UK identifies this product as a Nintendo Switch 2 game and says it cannot be played on Nintendo Switch. Square Enix’s FAQ also says save data cannot transfer from the Switch version to the Switch 2 retail version. If you have an unfinished original-Switch save, you should expect to begin again rather than continue that run on Switch 2.

Yes, if you want a substantial, story-led turn-based RPG and are comfortable with its classic structure. If you already own the Switch version
The case is less compelling. Nintendo Life’s September 24, 2026 review calls this the best handheld way to play the game, while questioning the value for people who already own an earlier version. That is a critic’s qualitative assessment, not a technical benchmark. Since Square Enix says the story and content match the Switch edition and saves do not carry over, consider whether the graphics modes and starting a fresh file are worth paying for again.
Nintendo Life listed launch prices of $39.99 in North America and £34.99 in the UK/Europe in its September 2026 review. Those are region-specific release prices, not guaranteed current prices; check your local store listing before purchase.

Verdict
DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition remains an appealing classic-style RPG, and its Switch 2 release gives newcomers a polished way to start. For owners of the Switch edition, the decision turns on whether the listed graphics modes justify a separate purchase and a new playthrough: the content is the same, and the old save cannot be transferred.
