Choose Dragon Age: Inquisition if you want broader roaming spaces and the ability to carry a custom Dragon Age world state into the game. Neither is a universal upgrade: the better fit depends on whether you value combat flow and a focused route or open-ended exploration and continuity.
At a glance: which game fits you?
| What matters most to you | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fluid, action-forward combat with tactical commands | Dragon Age: The Veilguard | Choose a class, bring two companions, and direct allies through an ability wheel. |
| Distinct regions linked by a central hub | Dragon Age: The Veilguard | The Lighthouse is a central base, and regions are reached through the Crossroads. |
| Wider areas to roam | Dragon Age: Inquisition | Its scale is more appealing if broad exploration is a priority, though some players may find that scale slows progression. |
| A custom history carried forward from earlier games | Dragon Age: Inquisition | Dragon Age Keep was designed to let players build a historical world state and import it into Inquisition. |
| Companion and faction stories shaping later events | Dragon Age: The Veilguard | BioWare says companion and faction stories, side content, and player choices affect relationships and later stages. |
How combat and party control differ
The Veilguard puts moment-to-moment action first
The Veilguard offers three classes—Warrior, Mage, and Rogue—and a party of two companions. Its combat is action-forward, but it is not simply a matter of attacking in real time without direction: an ability wheel lets you pause the action, issue follower commands, and use abilities. Tactical choices and team combinations remain part of the system.

If you want combat that feels immediate while still letting you coordinate your allies, The Veilguard is the clearer match. The cited comparison material does not establish a like-for-like combat-system breakdown for Inquisition, so this is a recommendation about The Veilguard’s documented approach rather than a claim that one game has objectively better combat.
Exploration, regions, and pacing
The Veilguard favors a more directed route
The Veilguard uses the Lighthouse as a central hub, with distinct explorable regions connected through the Crossroads. BioWare’s player guide encourages exploring for side quests and loot, so a more focused structure does not mean ignoring optional content; it gives that content a place within a hub-and-region journey.

Larger Than Life Foes - Battle darkspawn, demons from beyond the Veil, dragons that rule the skies, and unique enemies as you advance your quest and fight for Thedas’s future
Inquisition is the pick for broader roaming
If you specifically want larger areas to wander through, Inquisition may be more satisfying. Its scale can also be a pacing cost. In a 2026 interview, former Dragon Age executive producer Mark Darrah said he would cut a large area such as the Hissing Wastes and reduce the Power needed to reach critical-path missions. He suggested a 40 to 60 percent reduction in that requirement as a design estimate—not a measured statistic or a universal player verdict.
That distinction matters when deciding whether to start with Inquisition: its wider spaces are a draw if roaming is part of the appeal, but less attractive if you prefer to keep story progression moving without as much time spent meeting progression gates.

World-state continuity: a key reason to choose Inquisition
BioWare designed Dragon Age Keep so players could customize a historical world state and import it at the beginning of Inquisition. For returning players who care about bringing prior saga choices into a new game, that makes Inquisition the clear choice between these two.

Companions, factions, and story preference
BioWare says that The Veilguard’s companion and faction stories affect the later stages of the game, and that player choices affect relationships. Its player guide also recommends side content and companion quests because they directly affect how later stages unfold. If you are looking for a fresh story that puts companion bonds and faction threads in the foreground, those are concrete reasons to try it.
That does not settle which game has better writing, characters, or companion depth. Those are matters of taste, and the available comparison does not establish an objective cross-game ranking. Choose based on whether you want to spend time with The Veilguard’s new cast or return to Inquisition for its broader role in the series’ history.
