Dragon Age: The Veilguard PC Settings for Better Performance and Image Quality

Start with Medium or High, then tune lighting, volumetrics, detail, ray tracing, and upscaling to fit your PC and frame-rate target. 2024 benchmark results are identified by test system and date.

For a practical starting point, choose the Medium or High preset, then tune the settings that put the most pressure on your system: lighting, volumetric lighting, level of detail, post-processing, and ray tracing. Keep texture quality within your GPU’s available VRAM, and compare DLSS, FSR, or XeSS on your own PC rather than assuming an upscaler will fix every slowdown. The best balance depends on your graphics card, processor, resolution, and frame-rate target.

Start with a preset, then tune for your target

Medium or High is a useful baseline, not a universal optimum. Test in a demanding area you can revisit, keep the resolution and other settings consistent, and change one option at a time. BioWare says most graphics and display changes can be previewed in real time through a UI cutout; some options may require restarting the game, according to PC Gamer’s 2024 analysis. EA’s PC features overview describes the available controls.

If performance is short of your target, PC Gamer’s 2024 guidance is to try reducing these settings first:

  • Lighting Quality
  • Volumetric Lighting
  • Level of Detail
  • Post Processing Quality

Compare the frame rate and image after each change. Settings do not cost the same on every PC, so use the changes that improve performance without making the image unacceptably soft or visually simpler.

  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.

Use ray tracing as a separate trade-off

The PC version offers ray-traced reflections and ambient occlusion, including a Selective mode. These effects can improve lighting and reflections, but PC Gamer’s 2024 testing found ray tracing added a significant performance load. If frame rate matters most, start with ray tracing Off or Selective; enable effects one at a time if you want to judge their visual value on your system. The test figures below illustrate one machine’s trade-off, not a prediction for yours. EA lists the graphics options, and PC Gamer describes its 2024 tests.

Choose an upscaler by hardware and image quality

EA lists NVIDIA DLSS 3, AMD FSR 2.2, and Intel XeSS. Upscaling renders the game at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image, which can improve performance when the GPU is the limiting factor. It is not a guaranteed fix for a CPU-limited system: PC Gamer reported a CPU-limited case on an RTX 4050 laptop where more aggressive upscaling did not increase performance.

Start with a quality-favoring upscaling mode, then compare both motion and still detail at your actual display resolution. In its 2024 comparison, PC Gamer judged DLSS image quality strongest among the implementations it tested, while reporting shadow problems with FSR and pixel crawling with more aggressive XeSS upscaling at 1080p. Those observations are specific to that testing and should not be treated as a ranking for every GPU, driver, patch, or later implementation. Read PC Gamer’s performance analysis.

Frame Generation is a separate feature from ordinary upscaling. EA and NVIDIA describe DLSS 3 Frame Generation support on compatible GeForce RTX hardware. Generated frames can raise the displayed FPS, but assess responsiveness as well as the displayed number; NVIDIA promotes Reflex alongside the feature for latency reduction. Do not assume a specific gain without testing your hardware and settings. EA’s feature list and NVIDIA’s announcement provide details.

Keep texture quality within VRAM

Higher-resolution textures need more graphics memory. If you notice hitching, especially when combining high resolution, demanding texture settings, or Frame Generation, lower textures or reduce another memory-heavy combination and test again. PC Gamer found that a 6 GB RTX 4050 configuration could run into memory limits, particularly with Frame Generation and the Medium preset; it also cautioned that 8 GB is generally workable except in combinations such as 4K Ultra. These are system-specific observations, not hard VRAM thresholds for every PC. PC Gamer’s analysis explains its test results.

Use a tested profile as a reference, not a promise

PCGamesN published the following profile on November 1, 2024, using an Intel Core i7-11700F, GeForce RTX 4070 12 GB, 32 GB DDR4-3200, and Windows 11 64-bit. It is a point of comparison for that test system, not a preset guaranteed to suit other PCs or the current game build.

Know which options change the presentation

Depth of field, motion blur, and vignette are mainly presentation preferences. Disable them if you prefer a clearer image, but PC Gamer described their performance benefits as tiny or negligible. Its October 2024 graphics-effects feature also says bloom cannot be adjusted during normal gameplay. PC Gamer’s effects guide discusses these options.

What the published performance numbers do—and do not—show

Independent performance articles cited here date from 2024. For example, PC Gamer reported a change from 31 FPS to 54 FPS after enabling Balanced upscaling in its tested 4K, high-quality configuration. That result belongs to its test conditions; it is not a promised uplift for a different GPU, resolution, or settings profile.

NVIDIA advertised an average 2.5× performance multiplier at 4K on RTX 40-series cards using DLSS 3 Frame Generation and Super Resolution with ray tracing and Ultra settings. This is a vendor-reported figure, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for an individual PC. NVIDIA’s announcement provides the claim and feature context.

EA’s PC feature article says BioWare devoted 40% of its platform testing effort to PC and conducted more than 200,000 hours of performance and compatibility testing before launch. Those are developer-reported prelaunch testing figures, not a promise that every hardware configuration performs equally. The independent settings and benchmark results above are also from 2024; current patch and GPU-driver behavior was not verified in those tests, so treat them as dated guidance rather than current-build measurements.

Check official hardware requirements for your configuration

EA published separate PC requirements for Ray Tracing On and Off configurations. Because the exact hardware rows are not reproduced in the source material here, consult EA’s specifications spotlight for the listed minimum and recommended hardware.
