Draft WordPress Title and Excerpt Changes With Claude Without Touching the Live Post

A safe workflow for drafting title and excerpt alternatives with Claude, reviewing them outside the live post, and publishing only approved changes.

Use Claude to draft alternatives, but keep them separate from the published post until a person approves them. The safest workflow is to preserve the current title and excerpt, review Claude’s proposals, stage the chosen copy in a separate review copy or staging environment, then update the live post only after approval. Do not change the existing post to Draft as a shortcut: that status is for content that is not published and may affect public availability.

What Claude can—and cannot—change

WordPress stores a post’s title, excerpt, and status as fields. Its Posts REST API documents reading a post and updating an individual post with POST /wp/v2/posts/<id>. Claude’s generated text does not change WordPress by itself; a person or separately configured integration must send a write request or save the text through the site’s editor.

The cited Claude and WordPress documentation describe their products separately. They do not establish a built-in Claude control that safely stages edits on every WordPress installation. Authentication, permissions, post type, plugins, and site configuration determine what a particular setup can do.

Keep the published post intact while you draft

1. Record the current version

Identify the post and save its current title, excerpt, body text, status, and permalink somewhere outside the live post. If you retrieve the post through the REST API, available fields can depend on authentication and edit context. Confirm that you have the intended post before preparing any update.

2. Ask Claude for proposals, not a WordPress write

Give Claude the relevant article text and a compact brief: intended reader, tone, factual constraints, and any title-length preference. Ask for a small set of labeled options, and specify that the excerpt should summarize the article rather than introduce new claims. Anthropic’s prompting best practices recommend direct instructions, relevant context, and structured prompts. Treat every option as a draft: prompting guidance cannot guarantee factual accuracy.

For example, request two or three title-and-excerpt pairs, each clearly labeled, and ask Claude not to change the article’s meaning or add claims not supported by its text. Review the wording against the actual post, including names, numbers, promises, and the search intent the existing article serves.

3. Stage the selected copy separately

Choose a staging method that leaves the published post untouched during review. Depending on the site’s editorial process, that might mean a separate review copy, an established staging environment, or another site-specific approval workflow. Check how that method handles URLs, statuses, and publication before relying on it.

WordPress distinguishes public posts from unpublished workflow states: its post-status documentation says published posts are visible to everyone, while Draft posts are not yet published and Pending posts await review by a user with the required publishing capability. Changing the existing published post to Draft is therefore not a safe assumption for staging; it can take the content out of public view. A Pending status is also not a universal staging mechanism for editing an existing published post. Confirm the behavior on the target installation.

Publish only after checking the exact change

For a manual editorial workflow

  1. Compare the approved title and excerpt with the saved originals and the article itself.
  2. Have an editor with the appropriate site permissions enter the approved values in the intended post, without altering other fields.
  3. Before saving, verify the post identity and confirm the title, excerpt, status, and any other visible fields are as intended.
  4. After saving, open the public permalink and inspect the displayed page. Theme, cache, SEO, or excerpt behavior can affect what readers see.

For a REST API or custom integration

WordPress documents the update route and the title and excerpt fields, but the correct authentication method and permissions depend on the site. Configure any integration to target the intended post and only the intended fields. Before sending a write, verify the post ID and current status; do not assume an integration will restrict its changes unless that scope is explicitly configured and tested.

Use revisions as a recovery aid, not as the approval workflow

WordPress’s revisions REST API reference documents revision and autosave routes; revision records can include title and excerpt values. After publishing, inspect the saved revision as well as the live URL. Confirm that revisions are enabled and retained as expected on your site. Revisions can help compare or recover saved edits, but they do not keep an unapproved proposal off the live page.
