Yes. A Dell laptop running Windows can download and install PC games from recognized digital storefronts, and no physical disc is needed for this route. Dell names Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store as places to get PC downloadable games. Whether a specific game will run well depends on that game’s requirements compared with your exact laptop, not on the Dell brand or the laptop’s age.
What “Dell laptop” actually covers
Dell sells many laptop models, and they do not share one hardware configuration. Before you check any game, confirm these five details for your machine, which you can find under Settings > System > About and in Task Manager (Performance tab):
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Windows version and edition, including whether it is Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Processor (the model name, for example an Intel Core or AMD Ryzen chip).
- Graphics: integrated only, or integrated plus a dedicated GPU. Task Manager’s Performance tab lists each GPU the system has.
- Installed memory (RAM).
- Free storage space on the drive where the game will install.
Keep these numbers handy. Every compatibility decision in the rest of this guide comes down to comparing them with a game’s listed requirements.
Choosing a storefront
Use the storefront’s own app or the publisher’s official site, and avoid unfamiliar download links that promise free full games. Dell’s downloadable-games guidance names three options, and it does not compare their current catalogues, prices, or account terms, so check those on each store directly.

| Storefront named by Dell | Free-to-play titles | Account required | Catalogue, price and terms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Named by Dell as available on the platform | Yes, a Steam account is needed to buy and install through the client | Not compared in Dell’s guidance; check the store page |
| Epic Games Store | Named by Dell as available on the platform | Yes, an Epic account is needed to access the library | Not compared in Dell’s guidance; check the store page |
| Microsoft Store | Named by Dell as available on the platform | Yes, a Microsoft account is used to sign in | Not compared in Dell’s guidance; check the store page |
The account column reflects how each client generally works. Confirm the sign-in requirement on the store itself, because rules can change.
How to know if a game will run well
Dell’s guidance on this question is direct: review the game’s requirements before you download. In Dell’s words, “Before downloading, review the game’s minimum and recommended system requirements, which are usually listed on the game’s product page.” (Dell, “PC Downloadable Games.”)
Read the two columns differently:
- Minimum is the lowest configuration on which the game is expected to launch, usually at reduced settings.
- Recommended is the configuration the publisher expects for a smoother experience at higher settings.
Then compare each line with your laptop’s details from the first section. Operating system, processor, graphics capability, memory, and storage all need to meet or exceed the listed values. A game that meets the minimum may run, but expect lower frame rates and reduced visual options. If your laptop falls short on memory or storage, the game may not install or launch at all.

Space and connection checks
- Free space: Confirm the drive has room for the installed game, not just the download. Updates can need additional space later.
- Connection: A stable connection matters for the download itself and for patches. Dell describes storage and internet access as factors that can affect the experience.
- Online requirements: Some games need an internet connection for activation or multiplayer. Whether a title works offline depends on the store and publisher information on its page, so check there before you rely on offline play.
Installing a game step by step
The exact labels differ between storefronts and Windows versions, so treat these steps as the general sequence rather than exact button text.
- Open the storefront’s app, or go to the publisher’s official site, and sign in or create the account the store requires.
- Find the game and open its store page.
- Select the install or purchase option, then follow the prompts to choose the install drive and location.
- Wait for the download to finish. The store will show progress and may pause if the connection drops.
- Launch the game from the storefront’s library. The first launch may download an update or require a one-time setup.
If the game is installed to an external drive, make sure that drive stays connected whenever you play.
When performance is poor
Dell’s current support article, “How to Improve Gaming Performance on Dell Gaming & Alienware PCs,” lists the steps below. Work through them in order, and stop once the game runs acceptably.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
Update drivers and BIOS
Dell recommends keeping graphics drivers and the BIOS current. SupportAssist can scan the PC, identify applicable drivers, and install updates. You can also choose drivers manually from Dell Support by entering your service tag or selecting your model.

If the laptop has both integrated and dedicated graphics, Dell says to install the integrated graphics driver first, then the dedicated driver.
Assign the game to the dedicated GPU
On systems with hybrid graphics, Windows may run a game on the integrated GPU by default. To change this:

- Open Windows Settings and go to System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the game from the list of apps. If it is not listed, add it with the Browse option.
- Select Options, then choose High performance.
Menu availability can vary by Windows version and installed hardware. Some Dell models also expose their own performance presets, and the preset names differ between models, so look for the closest equivalent to High performance in the Dell or Alienware tools installed on your system.
Choose a suitable performance mode
Dell recommends selecting an appropriate performance mode for gaming. Preset names vary by model, so use the mode your Dell software labels for maximum performance when you are playing demanding games, and switch back for everyday tasks.

Check background apps and heat
Dell’s guidance lists background apps and heat as possible causes of poor performance. Close apps you are not using, and make sure the air vents are clear and the laptop sits on a hard surface. A laptop that overheats may throttle its processor and graphics, which lowers frame rates even on a capable machine.

Windows version
Dell’s current guidance states that Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, and recommends Windows 11 for gaming performance and security going forward. This is Dell’s recommendation, not a guarantee that every older Dell laptop can run Windows 11. Check Dell’s specifications for your model before upgrading, and keep in mind that a game’s listed requirements still apply after any operating system change.
Optional: an SSD upgrade
Dell identifies an SSD as an upgrade that can reduce game loading times. It is optional. You do not need one to download or install games.
Quick Recap
- Confirm that your model supports a storage upgrade and which drive type it accepts (for example, the form factor and interface) in its Dell specifications before buying.
- Dell says laptop graphics cards typically cannot be upgraded, so a storage change will not improve GPU performance.
- If your problem is insufficient installation space rather than slow loading, a larger SSD may be the more relevant fix, but the same model check applies.
