These options differ in how you access the music and where you manage it.
Choose the right way to download music

Apple’s instructions distinguish subscription downloads, store purchases, and music transferred or synced from a computer. If you want music without an internet connection, make sure it is downloaded or synced to the iPhone first. Apple’s guide to playing music on iPhone describes these different sources.

Download Apple Music songs for offline listening
This method saves Apple Music catalog items for offline playback; it is not the same as purchasing a track from the iTunes Store. Apple’s iPhone guide says Sync Library must be enabled before downloading Apple Music items. The service and catalog vary by country or region.

- On iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Music and turn on Sync Library.
- Open the Music app and find the song, album, or playlist you want.
- Add the item to your library.
- Touch and hold a song and tap Download. For an album or playlist, use its Download button.
- To find saved items later, open Library > Downloaded in Music.
To download newly added songs automatically, go to Settings > Apps > Music and turn on Automatic Downloads. You can also control whether Music downloads over cellular data in its settings. Cellular use can incur carrier charges, and higher-quality audio settings can use substantially more data than High Efficiency. See Apple’s instructions for adding music and listening offline.

Buy a song or album in the iTunes Store
If you do not subscribe to Apple Music—or want a store purchase rather than subscription access—you can buy available tracks and albums in the iTunes Store app. Store availability and features vary by region.
- Open the iTunes Store app and search for the song or album.
- Tap the displayed price. If an item is offered free, tap Get.
- Authenticate if prompted, then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the purchase and download.
If the item shows a Download button instead of a price, it was already purchased and can be downloaded again without another charge. Apple says purchased digital media can be permanently downloaded and accessed offline. For details, see Apple’s iTunes Store instructions for iPhone.

Redownload music you already purchased
Use the iTunes Store’s Purchased section to retrieve music bought with your Apple Account.
- Open iTunes Store.
- Tap Purchased > Music > Not on This iPhone.
- Select the artist, then tap the download icon beside the track you want.
With Family Sharing, you can view eligible music purchases from a family member’s account listing. If a purchase is missing, check that the iPhone is signed in to the Apple Account used to buy it, look in Hidden Purchases, and check whether the song or album is already in Apple Music. Transfer music from a Mac or Windows computer
If you already have supported music files on a computer, Apple’s iPhone guide describes transferring them to the phone. The documented app depends on the computer’s operating system: use Music on macOS 10.15 or later, and iTunes on macOS 10.14 or earlier and on Windows devices.
For an Apple Music library you want available across devices, Sync Library is another option. Apple’s guide also says previously purchased iTunes Store items can be downloaded to up to 10 authorized computers and devices. Which option fits your situation?
- You subscribe to Apple Music: use the Music app to add catalog items to your library and download them for offline listening.
- You want to buy a track: use the iTunes Store; a purchase is different from a subscription catalog download.
- You bought it before: look in the iTunes Store’s Purchased section and redownload it.
- The music is already on your computer: transfer or sync it using Apple’s computer instructions.
