To download a .tex file from Overleaf, download the project’s source ZIP, extract it, then open the required .tex file. In the editor, select File > Download as source (.zip). If you use the redesigned editor and do not see that option there, check the dropdown next to the project name.
Download and open a .tex file

Open the Overleaf project containing the file.

Select File > Download as source (.zip). In the redesigned editor, look in the dropdown next to the project name if the menu option is not in the expected location.

Save the ZIP file. Overleaf says it is usually saved in your browser’s Downloads folder, depending on your browser settings, and is named after the project by default. See Overleaf’s project download instructions.

A project can include supporting files such as images and bibliography data. Keep the extracted folder structure intact if you plan to work with the project locally; the main .tex file may rely on those files.
What the source ZIP includes—and what it does not
The source download is a ZIP of project source files, not the compiled PDF. To download the PDF, select File > Download as PDF or use the Download PDF control beside the PDF preview. These are separate downloads, as described in Overleaf’s download guide.

The standard source ZIP also omits generated compiler files such as .aux, .log and .toc. If you need a generated file, open Logs and output files > Other logs and files and download it there. For example, Overleaf documents downloading a generated output.bbl file this way. See Overleaf’s generated-files instructions.

Download an earlier version or a submission ZIP
Get an earlier project version
The regular source download exports the current project version. To download an older snapshot, open History, find the version you want, open its More Actions menu and select Download this version. See Overleaf’s history and versioning guide.

Include generated files for an arXiv submission
Overleaf’s arXiv submission workflow can create a ZIP with source and generated files, including a .bbl bibliography output. Choosing the download option prepares the archive; it does not submit files to arXiv. The workflow is documented in Overleaf’s project download guide and generated-files guide.
