To use Apple Maps on a fall hike without cell service, download the map area and save the hike or route while you’re still online. On an iPhone with iOS 17 or later, open Maps, tap your profile picture or initials, choose Offline Maps, tap Add, select the destination, adjust the area, then tap Download. A map download and a saved hike route are separate: prepare both if you want the route and surrounding map available offline.
Download the map area before you leave
Apple Maps offers three ways to start a download. Choose whichever matches what you’re doing; the selected area can be adjusted before downloading. Apple’s instructions and feature availability can vary by iOS version and region.

From Offline Maps settings
- Open Maps and tap your profile picture or initials beside the search field.
- Tap Offline Maps, then Add.
- Search for the destination or choose Current Location.
- Adjust the map area to include the place you need, then tap Download.
From a search result
- In Maps, search for a destination and tap its result.
- Tap Download if it appears. If it does not, open More and choose Download Map.
- Adjust the selected area and tap Download.
From a dropped pin
- Touch and hold an unmarked area on the map to drop a pin.
- Tap Download, adjust the area if needed, and tap Download again.
Apple’s offline map instructions cover these entry points. The download is stored on your iPhone, and Maps displays an estimated file size before you confirm it. If storage is tight, select a smaller area.
Save the hike route as well as the map
Downloading an area gives Maps offline coverage for that selected region; it does not automatically mean you have saved a particular hike. Apple Maps lets you browse and save hikes, or create a custom walking or hiking route. When saving, enable Download Route or Download Map so the route and surrounding map can be accessed offline.

- While connected to the internet, search for the hike in Maps or create a custom walking or hiking route.
- Save the hike or route. Add notes if useful for your plan.
- Turn on Download Route or Download Map when that option appears.
- Check that the route and its map have finished downloading before you depart.
Searching for hikes requires an internet connection, so find and save the hike before leaving service. Apple’s guide to saving walks or hikes explains the route options.
Check coverage and offline limits
Offline maps are not available everywhere. Apple states that “Offline maps are only available in selected areas,” and says available features vary by country or region. Confirm that your exact destination and planned route appear in Maps, and that the download completes. Apple announced topographic maps with contour lines and trail details, plus offline hikes, for the U.S. and Japan in September 2024; that announcement describes availability at that time, not a guarantee of current or exhaustive coverage.

Apple says offline maps can provide place information and turn-by-turn driving, walking, cycling, or transit directions with estimated arrival times. That does not guarantee every trail is mapped or that every route will work in every location. Treat the downloaded map as a tool for navigation, not proof that a trail is open, accurately mapped, or suitable for your plans.
Manage downloads and storage
Open Maps → profile picture or initials → Offline Maps to inspect your downloads. From there, you can resize or rename a map, or delete it to free storage. Apple’s offline map management guide also covers Wi‑Fi download controls, Automatic Updates, and Optimize Storage. Automatic Updates is on by default in Apple’s guide; Optimize Storage can automatically remove unused downloads after a period.
