Double-Layer STN: What DSTN Means in an LCD

Double-layer STN uses a passive, oppositely twisted cell to compensate optical retardation in an STN LCD. DSTN can also mean dual-scan STN, a separate scanning method.

Double-layer STN is a passive-matrix LCD design that pairs an active super-twisted-nematic (STN) display cell with a second, passive STN cell. The second cell compensates optical retardation to help suppress the interference colors associated with STN displays. The abbreviation DSTN is also used for “dual-scan STN,” a different scanning arrangement, so context matters.

What does double-layer STN mean?

In a double-layer STN LCD, the image-forming cell is stacked with a second STN cell that is not electrically addressed. The two cells have opposite twist senses; the passive cell serves as an optical retardation compensation layer. A 2015 corporate filing expands DSTN-LCD as “Double layer STN-LCD,” or double-layer super-twisted-nematic LCD. Guangdong Zhengye Technology’s 2015 filing uses the term in that sense.

What does the second STN layer do?

STN displays can produce interference coloration because of their optical retardation. The oppositely twisted passive cell is designed to compensate for that retardation and reduce the colors. The technical chapter by Stephen M. Kelly and Michael O’Neill describes double-layer STN as one method of optical-retardation compensation, including for full-color STN LCDs. When both cells use identical liquid-crystal mixtures, their birefringence temperature dependence and dispersion can match.

How does double-layer DSTN differ from dual-scan STN?

DSTN is an ambiguous abbreviation. In double-layer STN, “double layer” refers to two stacked optical cells: one active display cell and one passive compensation cell. In dual-scan STN, the screen is divided into halves and both halves are scanned at the same time. That is a scanning/readout arrangement, not the two-cell optical structure. Excel-Display’s glossary uses DSTN for “Dual Scan STN.” Check the surrounding description—or ask which meaning is intended—when a product or document uses the abbreviation without defining it.

What are the trade-offs?

The passive compensation cell does not need electrical addressing, so the cited technical account says it does not increase power consumption. But the extra cell makes the finished display heavier and more expensive to manufacture.

Film compensation is another approach. It can avoid the added cell’s cost and weight, although polymer retardation layers may absorb light and reduce brightness. These are general technology trade-offs, not a comparison of current products.
