You review and edit that schedule before saving it, then use an exported calendar file for phone alarms or a Python script for desktop alerts. It is a reminder aid, not validated prescribing software: the schedule must be checked against the original prescription.
What Dose Buddy does
In Lavish Sheth’s project submission, the user types prescription instructions or uploads a prescription photo. The app asks the model to return structured data—including medicine, dose, times and days—and displays the result in an editable table. The user can correct the entries before saving. Sheth’s project description presents this as a way to create reminders from written instructions, not as a system that verifies what a clinician prescribed.

How the local workflow is set up
Model and application
The documented stack is Gemma 3 (4B), Ollama, Streamlit and Python. Sheth’s setup uses Ollama to pull gemma3:4b, then launches the Streamlit application; a separate reminder script handles desktop notifications. The author says the model and application run locally on a laptop. The project description does not specify minimum processor, memory, storage, graphics hardware or operating-system requirements, so it does not establish what hardware another person needs.
Review before saving
The application’s intended sequence has a human check the model’s proposed fields and edit them before saving. The author says the prompt asks the model to copy medicine names and doses as written and return UNCLEAR when it cannot read text; rows marked unclear are refused at save time. These are author-reported safeguards, not evidence that every misreading will be detected. A legible-looking result can still be wrong, so compare each medicine and instruction with the source prescription.

What local processing means here
Sheth says Gemma runs through Ollama without a cloud AI service or API key, and that prescription text and photos do not leave the laptop for the AI step. That is a claim about the described model workflow, not a guarantee that every feature is offline: the author also mentions optional Telegram messages, which require internet. The project description does not establish the privacy behavior of every operating-system or calendar integration.
Ways to receive reminders
Calendar-file alarms on a phone
Dose Buddy can export an ICS calendar file with a repeating alarm for each dose. The user can import that file into a compatible phone calendar to receive alarms. The project describes the export, but does not provide a compatibility list for particular phone models or calendar apps.

Desktop notifications
A separate Python script can show desktop notifications. Unlike an alarm imported into a phone calendar, this option depends on the computer being on and the reminder script running at the scheduled time.
Optional Telegram messages
The author also mentions Telegram reminders as an option that requires internet access. The project description does not detail its setup or establish that this route has the same local-only behavior as the AI step.

What is known about accuracy and safety
The project submission reports that scripts were used to check parsing, scheduling and calendar-export logic; that the full app was run with Ollama; that the author scheduled a reminder a few minutes ahead and observed the desktop script fire; and that a labelled sample prescription image was used. Those checks are not an independent evaluation of prescription reading. The submission reports no clinical review, measured recognition accuracy, error rate or clinical outcomes.
The Gemma paper describes the model family as lightweight open models based on research and technology used to create Gemini, and reports evaluations on academic language tasks and safety work. Those results do not demonstrate that Dose Buddy can reliably interpret handwriting, photos or medication schedules. The Gemma paper is about the model family, not a clinical validation of this application.

“Dose Buddy only sends reminders. It is not medical advice, and the schedule must always be checked against the original prescription.” — Lavish Sheth, project author

Sheth describes the design priority this way: “Small models need guardrails. Telling the model to say UNCLEAR instead of guessing, and forcing a human review, matters more than any prompt cleverness.” That approach can prompt a person to review uncertain text, but it cannot replace checking the complete schedule against the original instructions or asking a pharmacist or prescriber when anything is ambiguous.

Which Dose Buddy is this?
This article concerns Lavish Sheth’s Gemma-and-Ollama project submission. It is not the separate Android app called DoseBuddy: Medication Reminder by DenseWatermelon. That app has its own Google Play listing and privacy policy; their features and privacy terms should not be attributed to Sheth’s prototype.
