DOOM: The Dark Ages Performance Settings: Improve FPS Without Losing Readability

Use DOOM: The Dark Ages Benchmark Mode to test graphics changes on your PC, compare frame times, and keep only the adjustments that preserve readability.

There is no Bethesda-verified graphics preset that boosts frame rate while preserving readability on every PC. The dependable approach is to confirm your system meets the game’s requirements, use its built-in Benchmark Mode to establish a baseline, and change one graphics option at a time. Keep a change only if the measured performance improves and moving scenes remain easy to read.

Check your PC against the game’s targets first

Bethesda’s PC specifications set expectations for three performance tiers. These are targets, not a guarantee that every system will hold the listed frame rate in every scene.

Target Resolution, frame rate and quality GPU and dedicated VRAM System RAM Storage
Minimum 1080p / 60 FPS / Low Hardware ray-tracing-capable GPU; at least 8GB. Examples: NVIDIA RTX 2060 Super or AMD RX 6600. 16GB NVMe SSD with 100GB available
Recommended 1440p / 60 FPS / High 10GB. Examples: NVIDIA RTX 3080 or AMD RX 6800. 32GB NVMe SSD required; available space stated for minimum tier is 100GB.
Ultra 4K 2160p / 60 FPS / Ultra 16GB. Examples: NVIDIA RTX 4080 or AMD RX 7900 XT. 32GB NVMe SSD required; available space stated for minimum tier is 100GB.

Bethesda says a hardware ray-tracing-compatible GPU is required even at minimum specifications. Its PC specifications also call for an NVMe drive; Bethesda’s performance troubleshooting guidance says to install the game on NVMe rather than a hard disk. Moving from a hard disk to the required drive type is a system check, not a guaranteed FPS upgrade for a PC already using NVMe.

Use Benchmark Mode to measure changes

Bethesda added Benchmark Mode in its June 18, 2025 PC update. The official notes describe a consistent, nearly deterministic route through selected levels, with graphs for FPS, total frame time, GPU frame time and CPU frame time. Find it under Extras in the main menu. The benchmark makes settings comparisons more repeatable; it does not determine whether an image is readable for you.

#1 Best Overall
DOOM: The Dark Ages – PlayStation 5
  • Developed by id Software, DOOM: The Dark Ages is the prequel to the critically acclaimed DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal that tells the epic cinematic origin story of the DOOM Slayer’s rage.
  • In this third installment of the modern DOOM series, players will step into the blood-stained boots of the DOOM Slayer, in this never-before-seen dark and sinister medieval war against Hell.
  • A dark fantasy/sci-fi single-player experience that delivers the searing combat and over-the-top visuals of the incomparable DOOM franchise, powered by the latest idTech engine. With a customizable difficulty system, it’s the perfect entry point whether you’re new to the franchise or a long time fan.
  • As the super weapon of gods and kings, shred enemies with devastating favorites like the Super Shotgun while also wielding a variety of new bone-chewing weapons, including the versatile Shield Saw.
  • Experience the origin story of the DOOM Slayer’s rage in this epic, cinematic, and action-packed story.
  1. Record a baseline. Run a Benchmark Mode level at your normal resolution and graphics settings. Note the displayed FPS and frame-time graphs.
  2. Make one change. Try lowering the overall Graphics quality level by one tier, or adjust one individual graphics option. Avoid changing resolution and several quality options together, since that makes the result harder to interpret.
  3. Rerun the same level. Keep the route and other settings unchanged. Compare FPS and total, GPU and CPU frame times with your baseline.
  4. Check clarity in motion. Inspect moving scenes and small or high-contrast details—not only a still image. If targets, edges or other useful visual cues become harder to distinguish, undo that change.
  5. Repeat or restore. Test another single change only after recording the current result. Keep the combination that improves performance without making the game harder for you to parse.

This is a controlled way to use Bethesda’s benchmark functionality, not a claim that any particular option has been tested or is universally safe to reduce. Bethesda’s troubleshooting page recommends lowering the overall quality level but does not rank individual options by their effect on frame rate or readability. The official June 2025 update notes explain the benchmark’s route and graphs.

Follow Bethesda’s troubleshooting order for poor performance

If you are below your target or see inconsistent performance, check the broader system before cycling through graphics options. Bethesda’s PC performance troubleshooting page covers these areas:

  • Confirm that the PC meets the game’s system requirements and that the game is installed on an NVMe drive.
  • Check hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, overlays and background applications.
  • Update graphics drivers using the GPU manufacturer’s official instructions.
  • Lower the Graphics menu quality level, then use Benchmark Mode to assess the change.
  • Verify the game files, make sure the game is using the intended GPU, and check power settings.

These checks address different causes, so treat them as troubleshooting branches rather than guaranteed FPS fixes. If performance changes after closing an overlay or background application, for example, there is no need to reduce image quality to solve that particular issue.

Treat path tracing and vendor-specific features as special cases

Path tracing and DLSS Ray Reconstruction are not general-purpose settings to recommend for a performance-focused preset. Bethesda’s June 2025 notes limit support to specified NVIDIA GPUs and warn that attempting path tracing on other GPU models does not assure 60 FPS, correct visuals or stability. Check Bethesda’s update notes for the supported hardware before enabling those features.

NVIDIA has also published hardware-specific claims that should not be treated as universal settings advice. In its 2025 DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation article, NVIDIA reports an average 4X performance multiplier at 4K on the Ultra preset with DLSS Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50 Series. The figure is a vendor result tied to that setup, not a prediction for other GPUs or configurations. NVIDIA also says Texture Pool Size 1536 lets RTX 50 Series 8GB GPUs run Ultra settings with minimal image-quality impact; that claim applies to the named hardware class and should not be generalized to other GPU families.

What a settings guide can—and cannot—promise

The official sources provide system targets, general quality-reduction advice and a repeatable benchmark, but no ranked list of individual settings that preserves readability while increasing FPS. As a result, a universal “best settings” list would claim more than the published evidence establishes. Use the benchmark to identify changes that help your PC, then judge visual clarity in the kinds of moving scenes you actually play.
