Several old smart-home devices can still be useful after their manufacturer’s cloud service disappears. Community projects may restore local control, connect a sensor to a new hub, or turn a retired screen into a home dashboard—but a rescue is not the same as restoring every original feature. Compatibility depends on the exact model and, in some cases, its hardware revision or firmware.
Here are seven reported rescue paths, what they appear to offer, and what to check before buying parts or opening a device.

What “rescued” means—and what it does not
A device can lose its vendor app or remote service while retaining a local interface, a radio such as Zigbee, or a way to communicate directly with other equipment. Open-source software can sometimes use those remaining capabilities. That may be enough for local automation or a replacement dashboard, but it does not automatically restore the manufacturer’s cloud, app, accounts, or every original feature.

Home Assistant describes itself as “the open smart home platform that runs on your own hardware and works with thousands of devices and brands.” Its own summary says it serves more than two million homes and had more than 21,000 contributors in 2024; those are figures published by Home Assistant, not independent measurements. The practical point is that a local platform can provide a destination for compatible devices, but it cannot make unsupported hardware compatible by itself.

The seven examples below are not equally well documented. Project documentation gives specific details for OpenNeato, ratgdo, ZHA, and Zigbee2MQTT. Claims about SmartDry, Portal, Wemo, and Iris model compatibility are less specific, so verify the exact device before spending money.

How each rescue works
First- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats
A How-To Geek report says Google ended support for the first and second generations in 2025, removing cloud connectivity and remote features while leaving local control possible. It identifies No Longer Evil as an open-source firmware and self-hosted replacement route that can restore remote temperature control and modes, including through Home Assistant.
The available information does not establish the exact supported revisions, flashing procedure, or current maintenance status. Do not assume that every older Nest thermostat—or every unit described as a first- or second-generation model—can use this route. Confirm that the project explicitly supports the exact thermostat before attempting a firmware change.

Neato robot vacuums
OpenNeato documents a local replacement interface for Neato Botvac D3–D7 robots. It connects an ESP32 to the robot over UART and provides a local web interface over Wi-Fi without an external account or cloud dependency. Its documented functions include status, cleaning controls, manual driving, maps, and scheduling.
Check OpenNeato’s target models and wiring requirements before selecting an ESP32 or opening the vacuum. This is distinct from Home Assistant’s Neato integration: Home Assistant says new installations of that integration are unavailable because the Neato Developer Network is no longer available. The legacy cloud integration and OpenNeato’s independent local bridge are different routes.
SmartDry dryer sensors
A How-To Geek report describes a community method that reads SmartDry’s Bluetooth broadcasts and shares sensor information with Home Assistant without the discontinued cloud service. No project-owned documentation or precise hardware-revision compatibility information is established here. Check the current integration details and the revision printed on your sensor before buying a Bluetooth adapter or relying on it for notifications.

- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage-door openers
ratgdo is a control board intended to replace reliance on MyQ for compatible Chamberlain, LiftMaster, and Merlin residential openers. Its project documentation describes local MQTT and dry-contact control, plus status feedback; it includes support for Security+ 2.0. The available functions vary with the opener’s protocol and firmware. Some dry-contact setups use reed switches, while MQTT control requires an MQTT broker.
Identify the opener model and protocol, then follow ratgdo’s installation instructions for that specific setup. A garage door is a safety-critical moving system: do not treat a community control board as proof that the opener’s safety sensors or other protections are working. Test the opener’s normal safety functions and retain a reliable way to operate it if the network or added controller fails.
Meta Portal displays
A How-To Geek report says firmware changes in 2026 enabled ADB development on Meta Portal displays and names Ava Pro as a way to use a Portal as a local smart-home interface. No primary Portal firmware documentation, compatibility list, or Ava Pro documentation is established here, so this is a reported possibility rather than a verified route for every Portal generation. Confirm that the specific display and software combination is supported before resetting or modifying it.

Belkin Wemo plugs
A How-To Geek report says Home Assistant’s Wemo integration can communicate with older plugs over the local network, preserving local control after Belkin support ended for many products in early 2026. The available Home Assistant documentation details do not establish exact plug compatibility or setup requirements. Check the current integration notes against the plug’s model number; “Wemo” alone is not a compatibility guarantee.
Lowe’s Iris sensors
The reported rescue rests on Iris sensors using Zigbee, which allows compatible sensors to pair with a different Zigbee system rather than the original hub. Home Assistant’s ZHA documentation requires a compatible Zigbee coordinator and recommends Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 for new setups. Zigbee2MQTT documents Home Assistant MQTT discovery when its Home Assistant setting and Home Assistant’s MQTT integration are enabled.
Neither route’s documentation establishes an exact model-by-model compatibility list for Iris sensors. Pair and test the specific sensor, then check which readings and events are exposed before building automations around it. A sensor may pair without exposing every feature it had with its original hub.

How to decide whether a rescue is worth trying
- Record the exact identity. Find the model number and, where available, the hardware revision and firmware version. Category names such as “older Wemo plug” or “Iris sensor” are not precise enough to establish compatibility.
- Check the project’s current support information. Look for the exact model, required firmware, wiring diagram, and any known limitations. A project’s existence is not evidence that it supports your unit.
- List the extra equipment and setup. Depending on the route, you may need an ESP32 board, a Zigbee coordinator, opener wiring, reed switches, or an MQTT broker. Confirm the project’s requirements rather than buying parts based on a general device name.
- Decide which features matter. Separate the function you need—such as local control, status reporting, or a dashboard—from vendor-cloud features that may remain unavailable.
- Plan for failure and maintenance. Consider what happens if the replacement software, local network, or added hardware stops working. For a garage opener or thermostat, retain an ordinary way to operate the device and do not rely on an unverified integration for a critical function.
Which routes are most clearly documented?
OpenNeato’s documentation specifies its Botvac D3–D7 target range and ESP32-to-UART approach. ratgdo documents local control options while warning that functions depend on opener protocol and firmware. The ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT documentation lays out the coordinator and MQTT prerequisites for connecting Zigbee devices to Home Assistant. Those details make it easier to assess the setup, but they still do not replace checking the exact hardware.
For No Longer Evil, SmartDry, Portal/Ava Pro, Wemo, and Iris model compatibility, the available information is less conclusive. In those cases, treat the route as a lead to verify—not a promise that your device will work.
