Before you discard an old digital camera, decide whether it still works and whether you need to save anything stored on it. Keep a usable camera in service, offer it for reuse if someone will accept it, or use a local electronics-recycling route if it is broken or unwanted. Remove the memory card and check the camera’s internal storage before handing it over; deal with removable batteries according to their type and local rules.
Start by checking the camera and its photos
Test whether the camera powers on and works well enough to keep, repair, donate, or sell. Before any handoff, retrieve images you want to keep. Remove the memory card: the City of Calgary’s camera guidance specifically advises doing so.
Some cameras also store images internally. Sony Support Japan warns that, for the products covered by its guidance, formatting or deleting files may not completely erase data and recommends additional steps for internal storage. Consult the manual for your camera’s exact model and follow its data-removal instructions; Sony’s advice is product- and market-specific, not a universal procedure.
Choose the next step that fits
| Camera situation | Practical next step | Check before you proceed |
|---|---|---|
| It works and you still enjoy using it | Keep it in service. | Save any photos you want and check the battery’s condition. |
| It works, but you no longer need it | Ask a local charity or community group whether it accepts cameras. | Confirm acceptance, working-condition requirements, any needed accessories, and data removal. Acceptance is not guaranteed. |
| It is broken, unwanted, or not accepted for reuse | Look for a local electronics-recycling route. | Check municipal instructions, retailer or manufacturer take-back, or a recycler’s acceptance rules. |
| The battery is removable | Identify its chemistry and use a designated collection route where required. | Follow battery-specific and local guidance; do not assume it belongs in household trash or curbside recycling. |
| The battery is damaged or cannot be removed | Ask the manufacturer or local waste authority how to handle it. | Do not put a rechargeable battery in ordinary trash or municipal recycling. |
Reuse, repair, resale, or recycling?
Keep using it or pass it on
A working camera can remain useful to you or another person. Calgary recommends reusing working digital cameras and checking with a charity about what it accepts. The U.S. EPA also describes donation and recycling as ways to conserve resources and materials. These are possible routes, not a promise that a particular organization will take your camera.

Consider repair or resale only when practical
If the camera has a fault, check whether model-specific repair makes sense for its condition and your needs. Resale may also be an option for a camera someone wants, but value depends on the model and condition. The available guidance does not establish repair economics or resale prices, so compare those options for your particular camera rather than assuming either is worthwhile.
Recycle what cannot be reused
Use the collection route accepted where you live. In Calgary, the city directs residents to take old and broken cameras to an electronics-recycling drop-off and says not to put electronics in its blue cart. That instruction applies to Calgary, Alberta; other municipalities may have different services and rules. The U.S. EPA’s electronics donation and recycling guidance points consumers toward local information rather than establishing that every local program accepts cameras.

If you are screening a U.S. electronics recycler, the EPA identifies R2 and e-Stewards as accredited certification standards. It says certified recyclers are audited and keep data-erasure records. Certification is a useful screening point, but it does not confirm that a particular nearby recycler accepts cameras.

Check the battery label and your camera manual to identify the battery type and whether it can be removed. Digital cameras may use rechargeable battery chemistries. The U.S. EPA’s used household battery guidance directs rechargeable batteries to specialized battery recyclers, participating retailer take-back, or local household hazardous-waste programs. Collection rules vary by location, battery chemistry, and whether the battery is removable, so check local instructions. For a damaged or non-removable battery, contact the manufacturer or local waste authority for handling advice.
