There is no universally best Don’t Starve Together character. The current roster reference lists 19 survivor forms, each trading a distinct advantage for a drawback, resource demand or extra system to manage. Wilson is the safest starting point, Wendy is unusually forgiving in early combat, Wolfgang and Wanda have exceptional ceilings for practiced players, and Wortox, Winona and Wickerbottom can transform a coordinated team’s capabilities.

What the roster covers
Don’t Starve Together is Klei Entertainment’s standalone multiplayer expansion to Don’t Starve, released on Steam on 21 April 2016. Its loop combines fighting, farming, building and exploration in The Constant. The current fan-maintained roster reference presents 19 playable survivor forms: the returning cast from the original game plus six characters introduced in DST.
Perk wording and numerical values can change with patches. The descriptions here are playstyle guidance rather than a substitute for the survivor panel in your current game. Check in-game text and Klei update notes before relying on an exact damage value, cooldown or other patch-sensitive number.

How to choose a survivor
Use these questions instead of a permanent tier list:
- What job must be done? Boss damage, scouting, farming, healing, base engineering, faction building and resource production favor different kits.
- Who is playing? A drawback that is manageable in a four-player world can be punishing when one person must gather every resource alone.
- How much setup can you afford? Some abilities work immediately; others need gears, books, generators, Merm structures, souls, special ingredients or a prepared food supply.
- How does the survivor recover? Ordinary healing, combat healing, Abigail, souls, timepieces and food restrictions create very different safety margins.
- How many rules are you willing to change? Survivors such as Wes, Wanda and Warly ask you to learn systems that replace normal hunger, health, sanity or cooking habits.

Every survivor’s perks and playstyle
Wilson — the baseline scientist
Wilson is the reference point for learning the game. His beard supplies insulation and can be shaved for beefalo wool, while he carries no major character-specific downside. He lets a new player practice hunger, sanity, crafting, combat and seasonal preparation without also learning a special economy. Choose him when you are unsure what a world or team will need, or when you want the clearest view of the game’s normal rules.
Willow — fire and shadow support
Willow resists fire, can create useful light and works with Bernie for light and anti-shadow utility. Those tools make night travel and sanity threats less intimidating, but cold and darkness remain important pressures on her sanity. She suits players who enjoy placing and controlling fire, protecting a camp from shadow creatures and using a companion fighter rather than relying only on personal damage.
Wolfgang — strength that must be fed
Wolfgang reaches Mighty form when his hunger is full, gaining higher damage, health and attack speed. The payoff is outstanding boss and monster performance. His food consumption is correspondingly demanding, and he becomes fragile in Wimpy form. A Wolfgang player should secure a dependable food pipeline before committing to difficult fights; without it, the character’s headline advantage disappears at the worst time.
Wendy — Abigail handles the danger
Wendy’s sister Abigail can do much of the routine fighting, making early exploration and clearing safer for a beginner. Wendy herself deals less damage, and reviving Abigail requires Mourning Glory. Her best pattern is controlled engagement: let Abigail absorb or spread threats while Wendy supplies positioning, kiting and support. She is particularly valuable when a group wants reliable area clearing without asking its newest player to duel every creature directly.

WX-78 — a machine that scales
WX-78 permanently improves health, hunger and sanity by installing gears. Lightning can charge the machine for faster movement and light, while rain damages it. The result is a survivor who begins less comfortable than Wilson but can become exceptionally capable in a long world, especially when the player plans circuits around the current build. Weather awareness and gear routing are part of the character, not optional extras.
Wickerbottom — books instead of sleep
Wickerbottom’s tomes can put creatures to sleep, accelerate plant growth and produce other powerful effects. She can also prototype many recipes without first building the usual station, speeding an organized base. She cannot sleep and needs fresh food, so nightmare recovery and spoilage management deserve deliberate planning. Her strongest contribution is often indirect: one well-timed book can replace several players’ worth of labor or create a safer window for a team project.
Woodie — three forms for three jobs
Woodie’s Lucy axe never wears out. His transformations divide the workload: Werebeaver excels at gathering, Weremoose is built for fighting, and Weregoose travels quickly. Each form is a task-specific tool rather than a permanent upgrade. Transformations drain sanity and restrict crafting, so transform after stocking what you need and choose the form before leaving camp. He is excellent for a player who likes switching jobs, less so for someone who wants one stable moveset.
Wes — deliberately hard mode
Wes’s balloons are his principal special tool, but penalties to health, hunger, sanity and damage make ordinary survival substantially harder. He is not a weak version of another survivor by accident; he is a challenge selection. Pick him after you understand food, combat and seasonal preparation, and use him for a self-imposed test rather than as a first character or a team member expected to carry progression.
Maxwell — a workforce made of shadows
Maxwell uses Codex Umbra to summon shadow workers and duelists. That can give one player extra gathering capacity and combat help, particularly during base construction or resource-heavy expeditions. His low health and the sanity costs associated with summons make distance and resource control essential. He rewards assigning assistants to safe jobs and avoiding situations where Maxwell must personally trade blows.

Wigfrid — front-line fighter and singer
Wigfrid starts with battle equipment, heals health and sanity through combat, and can craft team Battle Songs. Her central limitation is a meat-only diet. In a meat-rich world she can sustain an aggressive front line and support everyone nearby; in a resource-poor world the same rule constrains the entire meal plan. She is a natural boss partner, but the group should know how it will supply her before choosing her for a long run.
Webber — build a spider faction
Webber can befriend spiders, work with Spiderdens and grow a colony that supplies silk, glands and monster meat. This turns an often-dangerous creature into an organized production and combat network. The diplomatic price is significant: pigs and other villagers are hostile. A Webber base therefore needs deliberate separation from pig settlements and a plan for handling neutral players who cannot safely enter the colony.
Winona — infrastructure before impact
Winona works faster and can build generators, catapults, spotlights and sewing tape. Those structures make her valuable at a permanent base and in prepared boss arenas, where automation, lighting and repair support can matter more than a small personal-stat advantage. Her power depends on committing materials and time to engineering. She is less impressive on an unplanned first-day expedition than after the team has chosen a site and started investing in it.
Warly — the team’s chef
Warly carries a Portable Crock Pot and has exclusive recipes that provide team buffs. His gameplay is an ingredient-planning exercise: prepare the right dishes for exploration, combat or a boss window, then distribute them where they matter. Repeating dishes causes hunger and sanity penalties, so simply cooking the same strong meal indefinitely backfires. Warly shines when teammates communicate their schedules and can gather a broad ingredient list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWortox — souls for healing and travel
Wortox collects souls that heal allies and enable short or long teleports. He is one of the clearest co-op support choices: a stored soul can rescue a wounded teammate or reposition the group around an obstacle. Food restores only half as much for him, and soul storage is capped, creating an unusual economy. He must keep collecting and spending souls rather than treating them as an unlimited emergency reserve.

Wormwood — plants from the inventory
Wormwood plants directly from inventory, gains sanity around growth and crafts living-plant gear. That makes him efficient at establishing farms and turning gathered seeds into a working food system. Food does not heal him, and fire is especially dangerous, so normal emergency habits need to change. He fits players who enjoy gardening, gathering and planning around non-food healing sources.
Wurt — recruit the Merms
Wurt can recruit Merms and crown a Merm King, producing major faction buffs once the infrastructure is in place. She is vegetarian, and pigs are hostile, so her world map has political as well as survival considerations. Wurt’s strength arrives after setup: recruit, build and protect the faction first, then use the improved Merms for defense and labor. She is a long-term project rather than a quick combat pick.
Walter — ranged scout with Woby
Walter begins with a slingshot and Woby, who provides storage and can be mounted. Darkness does not reduce Walter’s sanity, making night scouting less punishing, but taking damage does affect it. He is a good choice for players who prefer distance, careful positioning and reconnaissance. The safest Walter play is to use range and Woby’s utility to avoid the hits that would otherwise destabilize his sanity.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Wanda — time is the health system
Wanda’s age replaces a normal health bar. Watches can heal, teleport and enable high damage, giving her exceptional control over preparation and movement. She cannot use ordinary healing, and reaching maximum age kills her, so every encounter is also a timing decision. Wanda is powerful in practiced hands that track age and watch availability; she is unforgiving when a player treats her like a conventional health-based survivor.
Wonkey — an emergent cursed form
Wonkey is not a normal character-selection option. The form is triggered by collecting ten Accursed Trinkets from Moon Quay. It boosts sprinting and changes faction relations, but disables the original character’s special abilities. Treat it as a travel-oriented transformation for an ongoing run, not as a replacement for choosing Wilson, Wendy or another survivor at world creation.

Best picks by situation
For a first world
Start with Wilson to learn the unmodified survival loop. Wendy is the next forgiving option if combat is the part you find most intimidating, because Abigail can handle many early threats while you learn positioning and resource timing.
For solo progression
Wilson offers the fewest obligations, while Maxwell can multiply gathering and combat labor once you can protect his low-health body. Wolfgang is a strong solo boss answer only when food production is reliable. WX-78 becomes increasingly attractive in a long world with regular access to gears and a player willing to plan around rain.
For a co-op support slot
Wortox covers healing and emergency movement, Wickerbottom supplies books and accelerated growth, and Winona converts gathered materials into base and arena infrastructure. Warly is the right support when the group will coordinate ingredients and meal timing rather than improvise food.
For combat specialists
Wolfgang offers the largest payoff for food discipline, Wigfrid combines battle gear with combat healing and songs, and Wanda rewards precise control of age and watches. Wendy contributes by shifting danger to Abigail instead of competing for the highest personal damage.
For a different ruleset
Choose Webber or Wurt when you want faction diplomacy to shape the map, Woodie when you want task-specific transformations, Wormwood when farming is the central project, or Wes when the objective is simply to make survival harder.
Character gifts and collectibles
Klei’s official merchandise page lists Abigail, Beefalo and Chester plush replicas along with character figurines, pins, stickers and a Don’t Starve board game. A Don’t Starve plush is the most direct gift for someone whose favorite survivor is part of their play identity. Availability, seller and regional stock can change, so verify those details at the time of purchase rather than treating any listing as permanent.
Version and roster caveat
The 19-character count and detailed perk summaries come from an unofficial fan-made compendium. It is useful for seeing the roster and comparing playstyles, but exact perk wording can be version-sensitive. For numerical stats or patch-dependent behavior, confirm the current in-game description and Klei’s update notes.
