1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor most homes, Cat 6 is the practical Ethernet cable to buy. If an existing Cat 5e run already carries your connection at 1 Gbps or less, there is no category-based reason to replace it. Choose Cat 6A only for a new fixed run that must carry 10 Gb/s across the full 100 m channel. Cat 8 is a short-reach cable built for data-center server-to-switch links, not a home speed upgrade.
Which cable fits your situation
| Situation | Cable to use | Why, based on the published specifications |
|---|---|---|
| Gigabit (1 Gbps) internet or LAN, with a working Cat 5e run already in place | Keep the Cat 5e | NETGEAR Support lists Cat 5e at 1 Gbps up to 100 m (328 ft.), in its guide last updated July 2025. |
| Replacing a patch cable, or buying for 2.5 Gb/s, 5 Gb/s or 10 Gb/s equipment | Cat 6 | NETGEAR recommends Cat 6 or better for multi-gig-capable devices or ISP service. Its published 10 Gbps reach for Cat 6 is 55 m (180 ft.), while Fluke Networks lists 35 m (see the distance section below). |
| New in-wall run that must carry 10GBASE-T across the full 100 m | Cat 6A | NETGEAR lists Cat 6A at 10 Gbps up to 100 m (328 ft.), and Fluke Networks’ guidance also supports 100 m for 10GBASE-T. |
| Data-center links between servers and switches running 25 or 40 Gb/s | Cat 8 | Specified for a 30 m, two-connector channel, characterized to 2 GHz, and aimed at 25/40GBASE-T at the data-center edge (Fluke Networks). |
Why Cat 8 is not a home upgrade
Cat 8’s headline figure is its 2 GHz frequency, and that number is what makes it look like the fastest choice. The features that matter for a home are less flattering. The standard channel is 30 m with two connectors, which is much shorter than a typical house wiring run. The cable is designed to connect equipment that runs at 25 or 40 Gb/s, which ordinary home routers, computers and switches do not use. Its screened construction is built for a controlled data-center environment.

In practice, buying Cat 8 for a home means paying for performance that your network hardware cannot use. Before you consider it, check whether any device on the path supports 25 or 40 Gb/s. For nearly every home network, the answer is no.

A cable’s category sets capability, not your internet speed
A cable is one link in a chain that also includes the network adapters at each end, the router or switch, and the internet plan you pay for. Fluke Networks makes the same point in its cabling certification guidance: “Cabling standards are related to, but not the same as network standards.” A better cable cannot raise a 500 Mb/s internet plan to gigabit, and it cannot make a 1 Gb/s-only computer run faster.
#1 Best Overall
- High-Performance Connectivity: This Cat 6 ethernet cable is designed for superior performance, with a 24 AWG copper wire core. It provides universal connectivity as an ethernet cord for LAN network components such as PCs, servers, printers, routers, and more, ensuring reliable and fast network connections
- Advanced Cat6 Technology: Experience Cat6 performance with higher bandwidth at a Cat5e price. This network cable is future-proof, ready for 10-Gigabit Ethernet and backwards compatible with any existing Cat 5 cable network. It meets or exceeds Category 6 performance according to the TIA/EIA 568-C.2 standard
- Reliable Wired Network Solution: Known variously as a Cat6 network cable, ethernet cable Cat 6, or Cat 6 data/LAN cable, this RJ45 cable offers a more secure and reliable connection than wireless networks. It's ideal for internet connections that demand consistency and security
- Durable and Secure Design: The connectors of this ethernet cable feature gold-plated contacts and strain-relief boots for enhanced durability. Bare copper conductors not only improve cable performance but also comply with communication cable specifications
- High-Speed Data Transfer: With up to 550 MHz bandwidth, this ethernet cord is ideal for server applications, cloud computing, video surveillance, and streaming high-definition video. It also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE, PoE+, PoE++) for powering devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points, ensuring fast and reliable network performance.
To see what your link actually negotiated, open Settings > Network & Internet > Ethernet on Windows, select your active connection, and read the Link speed value. If that value is lower than your device or plan should support, the cause could be the cable, a port, an adapter setting or the device itself. Test each one before replacing cable you may not need to replace.
The Cat 6 distance conflict
Published guidance does not agree on how far Cat 6 carries 10GBASE-T. NETGEAR gives 55 m (180 ft.) for 10 Gbps. Fluke Networks gives 35 m. The difference matters only if you are planning a long fixed run near the upper end of that range. For a patch cable, or a run you can keep short, Cat 6 is a sound choice. For a new in-wall run that must reliably carry 10 Gb/s across the full 100 m, choose Cat 6A rather than relying on the shorter Cat 6 figure.

- Cat 6 performance at a Cat5e price but with higher bandwidth
- High Performance Cat6, 30 AWG, RJ45 Ethernet Patch Cable provides universal connectivity for LAN network components such as PCs,computer servers, printers, routers, switch boxes, network media players,NAS,VoIP phones
- Jadaol cat6 standard cable support Cat8 and Cat7 network and provides performance of up to 250 MHz 10Gbps and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet)
- UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) patch cable with RJ45 gold-plated Connectors and are made of 100% bare copper wire, ensure minimal noise and interference
- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
Running 2.5 Gb/s or 5 Gb/s over existing Cat 5e
Some existing Cat 5e installations will carry 2.5 Gb/s or 5 Gb/s, but not all of them will. The result depends on how the cable was installed and its condition, so you cannot assume an old run will work. NETGEAR’s guidance is to use Cat 6 or better for multi-gig equipment or service. To test an existing run, connect the device, check the negotiated link speed as described above, and compare it with the speed the equipment should reach. If the link negotiates lower, the run is a likely cause and should be replaced with Cat 6 or better.

Cable labels do not certify an installed link
A cable marked Cat 6 or Cat 6A is not proof that a finished in-wall link meets the standard. Fluke Networks explains that a certified installed link needs suitable cable and connecting hardware, installation that follows the rules, and a pass on a compliant field tester. Jacks, patch panels and terminations all count toward that result. For walls you cannot easily reopen, have the run tested rather than assuming the category printed on the cable will be achieved.
