Before you chase hi-res audio, check the whole playback path: the track and app setting, your phone or computer’s output limits, the connection, and your headphones or speakers. A hi-res file alone does not mean your setup is playing it at its full resolution—and many listeners do not need to buy anything.
What do you need to listen to hi-res audio?
You need a source that offers the track in the quality you want, an app configured to stream or download it at that quality, a device and audio output that support it, and a connection and listening equipment suited to the format. A limit anywhere in that chain can mean the signal is played at a lower rate or converted.

Apple Music illustrates why the details matter: Apple lists Lossless up to 24-bit/48 kHz and Hi-Res Lossless up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Those are format ceilings, not a promise that every track is available at the maximum. Check the quality shown for the specific song or album as well as the app setting. Apple’s lossless audio guidance covers the service’s formats and setup.
Turn on the app’s lossless setting
For Apple Music on iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality, turn on Lossless Audio, then choose the quality for streaming and downloads. On a Mac, open Music > Settings (or Preferences in older versions) and select Playback; enable lossless audio and choose settings for streaming and downloads. Menu labels can vary with software version. Apple’s instructions for iPhone and iPad and its Mac Music guide give the platform-specific details.

The headphone amp adopts a 2-stage circuit design—the first stage handles voltage amplification while the second stage boosts current—ensuring pristine sound quality and rich detail.
- Versatile Ports, High-Performance Output: Supports dual 3.5mm + 4.4mm headphone/LO outputs, equipped with independent line amplification circuits. Also supports SPDIF and USB Audio output, with SPDIF performance rivaling professional digital transports—reducing jitter by 70%.
Lossless streaming and downloads can use more data and storage than lower-quality audio, and Apple notes that service availability may vary by region. If you stream over a limited data plan, check the streaming setting before leaving it at the highest quality.
Do you need a DAC for hi-res audio?
Only if your device’s built-in audio output cannot handle the sample rate you want. A DAC (digital-to-analog converter) turns digital audio into the analog signal used by wired headphones, speakers, or a receiver. Many devices already have a DAC built in; an external one is not automatically an upgrade you need to purchase.

iPhone and iPad with Apple Music
Apple says an external DAC is required to listen to Apple Music songs above 48 kHz on iPhone and iPad. If you are satisfied with playback at up to 48 kHz, that guidance does not require you to add one. For higher sample rates, use a compatible external DAC and a wired listening path.
Mac with Apple Music
Apple says 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models support native playback up to 96 kHz. Other Mac computers need an external DAC for sample rates above 48 kHz. These are model-specific limits; check Apple’s current guidance for your Mac rather than assuming all Macs behave alike.

For either platform, match an external DAC’s connection and supported formats to your device and listening goal. Apple’s device guidance describes the use case; it does not establish that any particular DAC sounds better than another.
Can Bluetooth play hi-res audio?
Bluetooth is convenient, but do not assume it preserves a wired lossless or hi-res signal. Apple identifies AAC Bluetooth use for AirPods and most Beats wireless headphones. Sony says Bluetooth does not meet its Hi-Res specifications because of bandwidth limitations. That is Sony’s specification framing, not a universal assessment of every Bluetooth codec or future device. Sony’s FAQ was last modified May 26, 2022.

This guarantees lossless audio quality for a pristine listening experience.
If your goal is to verify a lossless or hi-res path, connect wired headphones, a receiver, or powered speakers directly where appropriate, or use a DAC between the source and an analog listening device. Wireless can still be the right choice for convenience; it simply is not the same setup as the wired path described here.

| Route | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in output with wired headphones or speakers | Your device supports the quality you want and the track is available at that quality. | Simple and may require no new hardware; device output limits still apply. |
| External DAC with wired headphones, receiver, or powered speakers | Your device needs a DAC for the target rate—for example, Apple Music above 48 kHz on iPhone or iPad. | Adds hardware and a wired connection; check connector and format compatibility. |
| Bluetooth headphones or speakers | Wireless convenience matters more than confirming a wired lossless path. | Do not assume the Bluetooth connection carries the same lossless or hi-res signal as a wired route. |
Sony recommends using Hi-Res-compatible equipment throughout its system, while Apple documents wired headphones, receivers, and powered speakers as listening options. Still, a Hi-Res logo or a headphone’s maximum supported frequency does not by itself establish an audible improvement. Comfort, fit, and whether you like the sound matter too; the cited guidance does not provide a comparative listening test or prove that every listener will hear a difference.

What this setup advice does not cover
Requirements differ among streaming services, devices, operating systems, apps, and tracks. The steps and sample-rate limits above are Apple Music guidance, not universal instructions for Qobuz, Tidal, Amazon Music, Spotify, Windows, Android, or every Bluetooth device. Check the current support information for your service and hardware before buying an adapter or changing system-level audio settings.
Apple describes ALAC as a format that makes files smaller while preserving all of the original data in the file. That describes lossless compression; it does not mean that every song is offered at the service’s maximum rate or that a particular listener will hear a difference. Apple’s Mac Music guide explains ALAC and Mac playback settings.
