For custom-part quoting, Xometry and MFG offer more direct digital quoting or RFQ workflows. Alibaba is a global wholesale marketplace for finding sellers, negotiating, and placing orders—not a domestic-supplier directory. None of these platforms, by itself, qualifies a supplier or proves that an order will be manufactured in the United States.
How the platforms differ
| Platform | Best fit | How the workflow works | Geography and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thomasnet | Discovering and comparing industrial suppliers | Search profiles using location, capability, certification, and business-type filters; shortlist suppliers; contact them directly or send quote requests. | Thomas describes a North American supplier network and a U.S.-supplier search page. Verify a supplier’s facility, capabilities, and credentials directly. |
| Alibaba.com | Global wholesale product sourcing and seller negotiation | Find products and sellers, request information or quotes, discuss customization, and place orders. Eligible orders may use Trade Assurance under its terms. | Global marketplace; a listing does not establish U.S. production. Confirm the actual factory and order terms. |
| Xometry | Digital quotes and on-demand custom manufacturing | Submit part requirements for a quote across manufacturing processes, materials, and volumes. | Xometry describes a U.S. and global supplier network. Confirm the production location for the particular job. |
| MFG.com | RFQs for custom metal, plastic, and rubber parts | Submit an RFQ and compare quotes from matched manufacturers; the platform also describes NDA and quote/order workflows. | Global marketplace. State any domestic-only requirement and verify the producing facility. |
When Thomasnet is the better starting point
Thomasnet is a supplier-discovery directory and comparison workflow, not a single manufacturer or a production intermediary. Thomas says its network contains more than 500,000 North American suppliers. Its Made in America page describes searching more than 500,000 U.S.-based suppliers and more than 80,000 manufacturing products and services. These are platform-reported counts, not independently audited market totals. The page also says it is part of an SBA-cosponsored activity while clarifying that it is not an official U.S. government website and SBA participation does not imply endorsement.
For buyers, the practical value is the ability to filter profiles, build a shortlist, and reach out to manufacturers. Thomas describes comparing up to five selected suppliers, sending a quote request with project details and files, and contacting up to 20 suppliers using the same brief. These are platform-described functions; a profile or listed certification is a lead to verify, not proof that a supplier meets your requirements.

Alibaba.com is designed around global wholesale sourcing: find products and sellers, communicate, negotiate, order, pay, and arrange shipping. It can suit buyers seeking finished goods or discussing customization directly with sellers, including through RFQs. It should not be treated as a domestic-manufacturing directory simply because a listing or seller communicates with U.S. buyers.
Alibaba says Trade Assurance protections relate to the quality and shipment terms agreed in an eligible order and depend on following its order and payment requirements. It is not a general guarantee of supplier quality and cannot replace supplier qualification. Before ordering, check the live eligibility and terms; put measurable specifications, delivery dates, and other material requirements in the online order; keep relevant communications on-platform; and use a qualifying payment route. Do not assume a particular remedy, payment option, or refund period without checking the terms that apply to the specific order.

When to use Xometry or MFG for custom parts
Xometry: quote-to-production workflow
Xometry describes digital quoting and on-demand manufacturing across processes, materials, and volumes through a U.S. and global supplier network. Its company page says the network includes more than 5,000 vetted suppliers and describes test parts and further review for network suppliers. Those are company claims, not independent audits. Because the network is global, specify a domestic-production requirement and confirm the manufacturing location for the quoted job.
MFG: submit an RFQ to matched manufacturers
MFG describes a global marketplace for custom metal, plastic, and rubber parts. Buyers submit an RFQ and compare quotes from manufacturers matched by location, capabilities, and certifications; MFG also describes electronic NDAs and quote/order workflows. A match or location filter is not proof that the quoted work will be made at a particular site. Put your geographic requirement in the RFQ and verify the actual production location with the supplier.

- Need to discover a range of U.S. industrial suppliers? Start with Thomasnet’s directory and shortlist workflow, then contact candidates and verify their qualifications.
- Need custom parts quoted or sourced through a digital manufacturing workflow? Compare Xometry’s quoting model and MFG’s RFQ marketplace, while checking process, material, capacity, and factory location.
- Need wholesale products or to negotiate with global sellers? Alibaba supports that workflow; assess the seller and treat Trade Assurance as conditional order protection, not as a quality certification.
- Is U.S. production mandatory? Ask for the name and address of the facility that will perform the work, and have the supplier confirm it in writing. A platform’s headquarters, marketing language, or domestic-facing page does not establish where a particular order will be made.
Build one RFQ that makes quotes comparable
Whether you send a brief through Thomasnet, submit a marketplace RFQ, or request a digital quote, use the same scope for every candidate. Include:
- Current drawings and specifications, including material, process, tolerances, and finish.
- Quantity breaks, expected annual volume, and any tooling or non-recurring engineering requirements.
- Required certifications, quality controls, inspection plan, and acceptance criteria.
- Target delivery date, packaging requirements, destination, and delivery terms.
- Confidentiality and intellectual-property requirements, plus whether the respondent is the manufacturer, a broker, or a distributor.
- The required production country and the actual facility expected to make the parts.
Compare fully scoped written quotes rather than headline unit prices. Normalize tooling and setup, unit costs at each quantity, finishing, inspection, packaging, freight, and—where relevant—duties and taxes. Ask for a sample or inspection plan before committing to production when the risk or cost warrants it. Check references, capacity, certifications with issuing bodies where needed, and written remedies and dispute terms before placing an order.
