Zero trust can make some AI-assisted cyberattacks harder and limit damage if an account or device is compromised, but it cannot stop every AI-related attack. It governs who or what can access particular resources, using explicit, least-privilege decisions. Attacks on AI models, their data, inputs, outputs, and connected tools involve risks that access controls alone do not address.
What does “AI-powered cyberattack” mean?
The phrase covers two different situations. An attacker may use AI to improve the speed, personalization, or reach of a conventional attack, such as phishing. Or an attacker may target an AI system itself. Treating these as the same problem obscures what zero trust can do.

NIST’s 2025 adversarial machine-learning taxonomy describes attacks on AI systems including evasion, poisoning, privacy attacks, and misuse. It considers threats to data and models across training, testing, and deployment, as well as risks in surrounding systems where a model can access private information or use tools to take actions. NIST’s AI 100-2e2025 is voluntary guidance, not a guarantee that any mitigation is complete.
AI is dual-use: it can give defenders new tools while also enhancing attackers’ capabilities. That does not mean every attack uses AI, or that AI changes the basic access-control problem.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
What does zero trust do?
Zero trust is an approach to protecting users, assets, and resources—not a single product or a promise of immunity. NIST’s SP 800-207 describes a shift away from static, network-based perimeters. Being inside a network or owning a device does not, by itself, establish trust. Authentication and authorization should occur before a session to an enterprise resource is established.
In practice, granular, least-privilege access policies can restrict what a stolen account or compromised device is allowed to reach. If an attacker gets in, limiting access to only what a user or service needs can help contain the incident and reduce its potential reach. The result depends on an organization’s resource inventory, policy design, and enforcement; it does not prove that an initial compromise will be prevented.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
How can it help against AI-assisted attacks?
Zero trust can strengthen access decisions around the resources an attacker might seek after compromising an identity or device. Per-request access checks and least privilege can limit which services, accounts, or systems that foothold can reach. CISA and partner agencies describe zero trust in terms of granular enforcement and least-privilege decisions.
CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide recommends phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA), particularly for services such as email and VPNs and accounts that access critical systems. It also recommends strong policies for user-to-resource and resource-to-resource access. MFA is a useful access control, but using MFA alone does not amount to a complete zero-trust architecture.

Organizations considering a FIDO2/WebAuthn security key can check that their identity provider and services support it. A key can support phishing-resistant MFA; it does not, by itself, stop AI-generated phishing or attacks against AI models.
What can zero trust not stop?
Some attacks exploit a user or software before an access policy can help. Others target AI systems’ inputs, training data, outputs, or connected tools. Zero trust can govern which identities and services may reach resources; the cited guidance does not say that it neutralizes adversarial inputs, poisoning, privacy attacks, or misuse of an AI system.

The scope of official guidance also matters. CISA’s Zero Trust Maturity Model Version 2 explicitly excludes recommendations for incorporating AI and machine-learning capabilities into zero-trust solutions. NIST describes AI security as an active research area and notes that existing frameworks and guidance do not comprehensively address several machine-learning attacks or AI systems’ complex attack surface. Claims that zero trust stops AI attacks outright therefore go beyond what this guidance establishes.

How should an organization think about protection?
Match controls to the assets and stage of risk they address. Access and containment policies govern entry to resources; AI security also requires attention to models, data, inputs, outputs, connected software, and tools across development and operation. Monitoring, incident response, recovery, and remediation matter when controls fail.

Organizations should assess their own needs and security posture before choosing network-access solutions, as CISA advises. No specific level of reduction in AI-powered attack frequency, success, or loss is quantified in the cited material, so zero trust’s effect should not be expressed as a percentage or guaranteed outcome.
