OBS can play a local pre-recorded video and send it to YouTube Live as an encoded 1440p stream. You do not upload the finished file directly into a live event: OBS acts as the encoder, and the stream’s output settings—not just the file’s resolution—determine the signal YouTube receives.
How the workflow works
Add the video to an OBS scene as a Media Source, configure OBS to output at 2560×1440, then send the encoded feed to YouTube Live using the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube lists 1440p at both 30 and 60 fps as supported ingest resolutions. Its encoder setup guide describes sending a feed from an encoder; this is different from uploading a finished video file into a live session.

Set up a pre-recorded 1440p stream in OBS
- Create or select a scene. In the Sources panel, choose + → Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one, then browse to the local video file. OBS documents support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable Loop if the video should repeat. The Media Source’s documented default is Loop off. Restart playback when source becomes active controls whether playback starts from the beginning whenever that source becomes active. If you need a playlist, OBS also offers a VLC Video source with a Loop Playlist option; VLC must be installed.
- Set the outgoing resolution and frame rate. Open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 2560×1440, then choose the intended common FPS value, such as 30 or 60. In OBS, this output setting controls the resolution sent to the stream. Base (Canvas) Resolution is separate: it is the composition area where sources are arranged. Changing the canvas may require resizing or repositioning sources. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s YouTube streaming configuration. The key tells the encoder where to send its feed. Treat it as a credential: do not share it publicly. In OBS, select the YouTube service and enter the key in the stream settings.
- Configure the encoder and test. Match the encoder settings to the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate guidance below. Start a test stream and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm that the video appears at the expected size, audio is present, motion is smooth, and the file loops or ends as intended before relying on the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring.
YouTube’s 1440p bitrate guidance
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026, gives different recommendations for H.264 and AV1/H.265. Use the values in the column for the codec you actually selected; do not combine settings across codec columns.

| Incoming stream | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | Listed minimum bitrate (H.264; AV1/H.265) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1440p at 30 fps | 21 Mbps | 15 Mbps | 7 Mbps; 5 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 34 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps; 6 Mbps |
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as protocols and recommends RTMPS. Its guidance also specifies CBR bitrate encoding, a recommended keyframe frequency of two seconds (not exceeding four), and frame rates up to 60 fps. These are published encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain the stream.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K60 Capture: Record in cinematic quality with crisp detail and vivid colors
- HFR Support: Play and capture in 1440p120 or 1080p240
- HDR10 Support: Capture brilliant HDR content with tone mapping on Windows
- Cross-Platform Compatible: Works with PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and more
- Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input
Choose 1440p30 or 1440p60
Choose the frame rate that suits the video and your system. A 60-fps output can make fast motion look smoother, but it is more demanding than 30 fps and has a higher recommended bitrate at the same resolution. OBS advises testing system capacity; if the output stutters or encoding is overloaded, reduce the output resolution or frame rate. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide covers those adjustments.
What 1440p ingest does—and does not—mean
- The source file does not set the live resolution by itself. OBS separates the canvas from Output (Scaled) Resolution, so verify the output setting and inspect the received stream.
- 1440p ingest does not guarantee 1440p playback for every viewer. YouTube transcodes live feeds into different output formats for viewers on different devices and networks.
- There is no established minimum PC specification for this exact workflow. The official OBS and YouTube material cited here does not name a required CPU, GPU, capture card, or internet plan for playing a local file and streaming it at 1440p. Test the actual setup rather than assuming a particular component is mandatory.
Troubleshooting common problems
- YouTube receives a lower resolution than expected: Check Settings → Video → Output (Scaled) Resolution in OBS; the source file’s resolution and Base (Canvas) Resolution do not establish the outgoing resolution.
- Video is choppy or OBS reports encoding trouble: Test at 30 fps instead of 60, or lower the output resolution. Check stream health in Live Control Room and confirm the selected bitrate is sustainable on the available upload connection.
- The file stops instead of repeating: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a multi-file playlist, use the VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist; VLC is required.
- The stream does not appear in the intended YouTube event: Confirm OBS is using the stream key for that event and that the encoder is sending to the configured YouTube destination. Check Live Control Room’s preview and stream health before troubleshooting video quality.
- Playback restarts unexpectedly when a source becomes active: Review the Media Source’s Restart playback when source becomes active setting and how the source is activated in the scene.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded video running on YouTube without leaving OBS or a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
