Maybe: some Echo models have a built-in Zigbee hub, but many do not. Check your exact Echo model and the protocol your smart-home device uses before buying a separate hub. Alexa or Matter support alone does not mean an Echo can connect directly to Zigbee devices.
Which Echo models have a built-in Zigbee hub?
Amazon’s current Zigbee support list names compatible Echo and eero devices; it includes Echo (4th Gen), Echo Dot Max (2025 release), Echo Hub, Echo Plus (2nd Gen), Echo Show 21, Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen), Echo Show 11 (2025 release), Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen), Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen, 2025 release), and Echo Studio (1st Gen and newer, 2025 release), among others. The list can change, so check the exact model against Amazon’s Zigbee support page before purchasing a hub or accessory.

Do not rely on “Echo” as the model name: the feature is not present on every Echo. Amazon also suggests asking Alexa, “Do you have a smart home hub?” That can be a quick check, but confirm the model on the support list if you are deciding what hardware to buy. See Amazon’s Echo hub setup instructions.

A built-in Zigbee hub is useful for supported Zigbee devices, such as some lights, locks, switches, sensors, and plugs. Amazon’s list of examples is not a guarantee that every product in those categories will work: check the accessory’s packaging or maker’s specifications for Zigbee support and Alexa compatibility.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Matter support is a separate capability. Amazon maintains a broader Matter support list, and an Echo appearing there is not automatically a Zigbee hub. Matter devices may use Wi-Fi or Thread, while Zigbee devices need a Zigbee-capable hub. Thread border-router support is another distinct model check. Match the accessory’s protocol to the relevant Echo support list rather than treating Alexa compatibility as a universal connection method.
Amazon’s Matter category documentation covers areas including lighting and plugs, buttons, sensors, locks and window coverings, thermostats, fans, air purifiers, appliances, and robotic vacuums. Actual functions depend on supported Matter clusters and Alexa capabilities; a category listing does not establish that every specific product or feature is supported. Details are in Amazon’s supported Matter device categories.

How to connect a Zigbee device to a compatible Echo
- Confirm the Echo. Check the exact model against Amazon’s current Zigbee support list.
- Confirm the accessory. Look for the Zigbee logo or an explicit Zigbee compatibility statement, and check the maker’s instructions for Alexa support and setup.
- Place it nearby. Amazon recommends putting the device within 30 feet (9 m) of the Echo hub for setup. It also says a compatible Zigbee device may be placed near another Zigbee device already connected to the Echo hub.
- Put the accessory in pairing mode. Follow the device maker’s instructions; pairing steps vary by product.
- Ask Alexa to find it. Say, “Discover my devices,” and follow any prompts. Amazon’s complete customer guidance is on its Zigbee setup page.
When you still need a separate hub
If your Echo is not on Amazon’s Zigbee hub list, it cannot serve as the direct Zigbee hub described here. Amazon says to use a separate Zigbee hub to connect Zigbee smart-home devices in that case. A separate hub may also be appropriate if a particular accessory’s manufacturer requires its own hub or the device is not compatible with your Echo. Verify the exact product requirements rather than assuming that support for Alexa or Matter resolves a Zigbee compatibility issue.
