Yes. Xbox describes the Series S as a 1440p gaming console that can upscale games to 4K. That means a game’s image can be output at 4K without the game necessarily being rendered natively at that resolution.
What “upscaling to 4K” means on Series S
Rendering resolution is the resolution at which a game creates its image; output resolution is what the console sends to the display. Upscaling increases the output resolution of an image rendered at a lower resolution. A 4K signal from the console therefore does not, by itself, prove that a game was rendered in native 4K.

Xbox lists 1440p as the Series S gaming resolution and says it can upscale to 4K. This is a console-level description, not a promise that every game renders at exactly 1440p or uses the same upscaling method. Xbox does not specify render resolution, frame rate, or dynamic-resolution behavior for individual games on its console specification pages. Is Series S native 4K?
Xbox’s distinction is that Series S is designed for 1440p gaming with 4K upscaling, while Series X displays games in native 4K. Those descriptions are not interchangeable: upscaling does not establish that the underlying game image has the same detail as native 4K rendering.

Does Series S support 4K video streaming?
Yes. Xbox separately lists 4K video streaming through supported entertainment services. Video playback is a different capability from game rendering, so 4K streaming does not mean games are rendered natively at 4K. Service availability may vary.

Xbox lists an HDMI 2.1 port, Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, and AMD FreeSync support for Series S. Its product page also says an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is included. These connection and display features do not change the console’s stated gaming-resolution distinction: they do not make a game render natively at 4K.

A 4K television can display a 4K output from the console, but the image may have been upscaled from a lower game-rendering resolution. The exact result depends on the game; Xbox’s console-level specifications do not establish one resolution or image quality for every title.
