Wired Android Auto does not use Wi-Fi for the phone-to-car connection. It connects over USB. But Google’s published wired-connection requirements include an active mobile data plan, and its setup guidance says the phone should be in range of a mobile data network. So USB avoids the need for Wi-Fi, but Google does not document using wired Android Auto with no data plan or no cellular service as a supported setup.
Do you need Wi-Fi for wired Android Auto?
No—not for the wired projection link. The phone connects to the vehicle with a USB cable. Google lists 5 GHz Wi-Fi support as a requirement for wireless Android Auto, not for the wired connection. Its wired setup instructions describe plugging in the cable and following the on-screen prompts; they do not list Wi-Fi as a setup step. See Google’s Android Auto requirements and setup instructions.
Can you use it with no mobile data or cell service?
Google’s guidance does not establish that as a supported configuration. Its requirements for wired Android Auto include an Android phone running Android 9.0 (Pie) or later with an active data plan, and the setup page advises having mobile network service. That is different from saying USB projection is guaranteed to stop the moment cellular signal drops: the cited guidance does not settle every offline edge case. The practical distinction is that no Wi-Fi is not the same as no mobile data.
If you have no cellular service, some connected functions may be unavailable even if the USB connection is established. Do not assume that every phone, vehicle, or feature will work normally offline.

What works offline—and what may not?
The USB cable establishes the phone-to-car connection; it does not provide internet access. Android Auto can display compatible phone apps for navigation, calls, texts, and media, but an app’s offline capabilities depend on that app and on what content or maps you saved beforehand. Google notes that some media apps require sign-in, a subscription, or a premium account; check the app developer’s guidance for offline use. See Google’s guidance on listening to media in Android Auto.
Do not confuse Android Auto projection from a phone with a car that has Google built-in. Google’s instructions for offline Maps in cars with Google built-in say to download maps in advance; traffic information is unavailable offline, and downloaded maps expire after one year. Those conditions describe Google built-in, not a universal offline guarantee for phone-projected Android Auto. See Google’s guidance for using Google built into a car without internet.

Check compatibility and troubleshoot a wired connection
- Confirm vehicle compatibility. Check Google’s compatibility information and your vehicle manual or manufacturer. A USB port by itself does not mean the car supports Android Auto; aftermarket stereos also need to be compatible.
- Check the phone and plan. Make sure the phone meets Google’s current Android requirements and has the active data plan listed for wired Android Auto.
- Use the correct USB port and a good cable. Connect a high-quality cable to the vehicle’s designated Android Auto USB port and the phone. Check the manual if you are unsure which port to use, and confirm the plugs match your devices.
- Follow the on-screen setup prompts. Google advises that the phone be in range of a mobile data network during setup.
- If it still does not connect, check the cable and compatibility. Try resolving the USB connection issue and contact the vehicle manufacturer for vehicle-specific help. Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guidance covers connection problems.
- If cellular service is unavailable, plan around app limits. Do not count on internet-dependent navigation, traffic, or streaming unless the particular app supports offline use and you have prepared what it needs in advance.
