For most people using a supported Windows 11 PC, no: you do not need to install another antivirus just to have antivirus protection. Windows includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which provides real-time protection without a separate installation or subscription. Microsoft’s U.S.-market guidance says, “For many users, this level of protection is plenty.” A separate security suite can make sense if you want specific extras, such as identity monitoring or a bundled VPN—not because everyone must replace Defender.
Windows Security and Microsoft Defender are not the same thing
Windows Security is the built-in Windows app where you review security settings and status. Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the antivirus component within that protection. Windows also includes other safeguards, including Windows Firewall and Smart App Control.
Microsoft says Windows 11 includes Defender Antivirus and real-time protection without a separate installation or subscription. Its guidance also describes Defender Antivirus on Windows 10 devices enrolled in Extended Security Updates after Windows 10’s end of support; that specific statement should not be taken to mean every Windows 10 installation remains supported.
What Defender can—and cannot—protect you from
Microsoft says built-in Windows 11 protection can help defend against viruses, malware, trojans, malicious downloads, suspicious attachments, and phishing websites. That is meaningful baseline protection, but antivirus is not a complete security plan or a guarantee against every attack.

Microsoft notes that antivirus may not fully prevent social engineering, newly identified ransomware, attacks exploiting vulnerabilities before patches are available, or problems caused by installing unverified apps. Safer habits and other controls still matter.
- Install updates: Keep Windows and your apps up to date so available fixes are applied.
- Protect sign-in: Use strong sign-in security for your Windows account and other important accounts.
- Keep the firewall on: Windows Firewall is one of the built-in protections Microsoft identifies.
- Back up important files: A backup gives you another recovery route if files are lost or damaged.
When a separate antivirus suite may be worth considering
Consider a third-party security suite when it provides a feature you want and will actually use. Microsoft gives identity monitoring and a bundled VPN as examples of extras some suites offer. Depending on the product, other features may include parental controls or coverage for multiple devices, but check that those features are included in the plan and supported on your devices.

Compare suites on current independent protection, performance, and usability results from the same test period; device and household coverage; recurring price and renewal terms; notifications and performance impact; and compatibility with your Windows setup. The available AV-TEST certificate names Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer) for Windows and is dated March 1, 2025, but its retrieved text does not provide comparable category scores. It therefore cannot establish a current ranking or show that Defender is better or worse than competitors. Microsoft’s “plenty” assessment is product guidance, not an independent test result.
How to check your protection in Windows
- Open the Windows Security app from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection and review the protection status shown there.
- If you want to check for threats, select Quick scan. Microsoft Support documents this path as Virus & threat protection > Quick scan.
Leave real-time protection enabled. Microsoft says that while it is off, files you open or download are not scanned during that period; it normally turns back on automatically. Avoid excluding files or folders unless you understand the risk: an exclusion means Defender will not check those locations during real-time scanning, which can expose the device or data. Cloud-delivered protection may send suspicious files to Microsoft for analysis; Microsoft says it will notify users if it needs additional files and flag when a requested file may contain personal information.

What happens if you install another antivirus?
On consumer Windows, Microsoft says Defender turns off automatically after another antivirus app is installed and turned on. That means a second suite typically takes over the active antivirus role rather than adding a second primary real-time engine alongside Defender. After installing a suite, open Windows Security and check that your protection status is as expected. Server and organization-managed configurations can work differently and are outside this consumer guidance.

Keep Defender enabled and maintain the other basic safeguards if you do not need a particular feature from a paid suite. Choose another antivirus for a concrete benefit—such as an included VPN or identity monitoring—and compare current, like-for-like test results and plan terms before buying. Microsoft’s January 13, 2026 guidance is written for the U.S.; feature availability may vary by region.
