Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

After setup, you can switch to a local account and sign in without internet access. Those are separate stages: the setup requirement does not mean you must keep using a Microsoft account every day.
This guidance reflects Microsoft’s published support pages reviewed on October 7, 2026. Requirements for managed or organizational deployments are not covered by the personal-use setup statement.

When does Windows 11 require a Microsoft account?
Microsoft’s Windows 11 System Requirements page says Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use require internet connectivity and a Microsoft account during initial device setup. Microsoft also says an internet connection is required to finish setting up a Windows Home or Pro device in its setup connectivity guidance.
This is specifically a rule for initial setup of those editions for personal use. It should not be read as a statement about every managed or organizational deployment. Microsoft’s current guidance establishes the requirement, but does not establish that any particular offline setup workaround will work on every current installation or configuration.

Can you use Windows 11 without a Microsoft account afterward?
Yes. Once Windows is set up, you can use a local account to sign in. Microsoft explains that a local account belongs to one device and “doesn’t require Internet connectivity to sign in.” See Microsoft’s account-switching guidance for the distinction and steps.
A local account does not connect Windows sign-in to Microsoft cloud services in the same way. Microsoft-account settings and files can sync across devices, while local-account settings, files, and applications are limited to that PC.

How to switch from a Microsoft account to a local account
- Open Settings > Accounts > Your info.
- Select Sign in with a local account instead.
- Follow the prompts to create the local account, then sign out as directed.
Microsoft documents this route in its account-switching instructions. Menu labels can vary slightly by Windows release.

What to consider before switching
Sync and access to Microsoft services
With a Microsoft account, settings and files can sync across devices and Windows sign-in is connected to Microsoft cloud services. With a local account, account data and settings are specific to that PC. The account choice is about how you sign in and what connects across devices; choose based on whether you value that sync or prefer a device-specific account.

Local-account password recovery
Set up recovery options when creating the local account rather than waiting until a password is forgotten. Microsoft’s local-account password guidance describes security questions for resetting a password. Its account-switching guidance also warns that a forgotten local password may not be recoverable if you did not create a password reset disk.
Activation is a separate issue
Switching account types is not the same as activating Windows. Microsoft documents activation with a digital license or product key, and says a digital license can be purchased after installation; see Activate Windows. You do not need to buy a license just to change from Microsoft-account sign-in to a local account. If your question is about an edition upgrade instead, Microsoft’s Home-to-Pro upgrade guidance covers that separate process.
