Some Windows 11 users report that their PCs use less memory after moving to version 26H2, with reported drops of roughly 1GB to 3GB on systems with 16GB or more. The change is not a Microsoft-confirmed 26H2 feature, however, and reports from 8GB PCs show little or no reduction. The update is an enablement package sharing its codebase with 24H2 and 25H2, so some underlying changes may have arrived through earlier monthly updates.
What changed with Windows 11 26H2?
Windows 11 26H2 is an enablement package, not a new Windows codebase. It shares a servicing branch with 24H2 and 25H2, and many improvements can arrive through monthly updates before a version label changes. Xenospectrum reported that general availability began on September 29, 2026, and that the package is 174 KB for eligible systems already on the shared branch. It requires one restart. Systems on older releases may need a larger upgrade rather than this small enablement package. Xenospectrum

Microsoft has not publicly claimed that installing 26H2 itself reduces RAM use. The memory improvement story comes from user reports and press coverage, not a Microsoft benchmark or a published controlled before-and-after test.

The figures below are observations reported by outlets, not comparable laboratory results. Idle memory use depends on the PC, startup software, background activity, and Windows caching, so these numbers should not be read as a guaranteed saving.

| Up to 3GB lower idle use and up to 40% faster app launches on systems with 16GB or more | Tech Times attributed this to independent testing, but the methodology was not verified. Tech Times |
Windows Latest and MakeUseOf also describe users reporting reductions around 2GB, with some claiming up to 3GB. TechRadar quoted an unnamed user saying RAM utilization fell by about 1GB. These reports point in a similar direction for some higher-memory machines, but they do not establish a typical result for every PC. MakeUseOf TechRadar
Which PCs appear to benefit?
Systems with 16GB or more
Most of the reported reductions come from systems with 16GB or more installed, including examples with 32GB and 48GB. That pattern is consistent with Microsoft’s reported 2026 priority to optimize memory use for systems with 8GB and above, but the priority does not prove that a particular PC received a specific improvement with the 26H2 enablement package.

Systems with 8GB
Reported 8GB systems have often shown little change; one cited example remained at 7.4GB used, or 96% of installed memory. Wccftech likewise noted that 8GB machines have not yet been helped in the reports it covered. A lower reading is not promised for 8GB PCs, and high memory pressure can remain a practical limitation for multitasking.
Why might memory use fall?
Press accounts of Microsoft’s engineering work describe a more efficient memory allocator intended to reduce overhead in apps and system components. Reported work also includes tuning WinUI 3 and improving memory efficiency in Chromium and WebView2. These efforts are described as gradual changes, rather than a single 26H2 switch. Microsoft reportedly identified memory optimization for 8GB and above as one of four priority workstreams in a July 31, 2026 quality progress bulletin, with related work continuing through the end of 2026. Those details are secondhand press accounts; no direct Microsoft statement or technical specification is available in the cited coverage.

A lower “used” figure does not necessarily mean the same amount of memory has been freed for applications. Windows uses available RAM for caching, and changed caching behavior can alter Task Manager readings without an equivalent change in application performance or memory pressure. PCMag raised this possibility, as reported by Windows Latest and TechRadar. Startup apps and background processes can also change between readings.

A before-and-after comparison is most useful when the conditions match. A single Task Manager reading cannot show that 26H2 caused a change.

- Before installing, restart the PC and let it sit for a few minutes without opening apps.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Performance, then Memory, and note the in-use figure. Task Manager labels can vary slightly by Windows build.
- Install 26H2 through Windows Update if it is offered, restart, and wait the same amount of time before taking another reading.
- Keep the same startup apps and background conditions for both readings. If possible, compare more than one restart rather than relying on a single snapshot.
Also look at whether the PC feels less constrained while using the same apps. A change in memory use by itself does not demonstrate faster performance, and the reported up-to-40% app-launch claim lacks a verifiable test method.

Should you install 26H2 for the RAM improvement?
Do not install it expecting a guaranteed memory reduction. If Windows Update offers 26H2 for a compatible system, installation can still make sense for security fixes and the extended support lifecycle associated with the release. Xenospectrum reported three disclosed known issues, all marked “Mitigated” on Microsoft’s release health information at the time of its coverage; issue status can change as updates arrive. Xenospectrum
If your 8GB PC remains memory-constrained, first check which applications and browser tabs are consuming memory. A hardware upgrade may help only if the device supports it: confirm DDR generation, SO-DIMM versus DIMM type, maximum supported capacity, and whether memory is soldered. Many thin laptops have soldered RAM and cannot be upgraded. Since Microsoft reportedly planned further memory optimization through the end of 2026, later cumulative updates may also change results.
